A Google Photos Takeout usually keeps each photo’s original capture date inside the file. What changes during download and extraction is the operating system’s timestamp for the file itself. Gallery apps, file browsers, and importers that sort by that filesystem date, or that cannot find an embedded capture tag, will place your library by when you downloaded it. The dates are often still present. The repair starts with finding which date your destination app is reading, and only then deciding whether anything needs to be written back.
What a Takeout export actually contains
Each item in a Takeout export carries more than one date. Google’s help page separates them: “The photo or video metadata still has the original timestamp preserved in the metadata embedded within the files.” The same page says the operating system can assign a new timestamp to the downloaded file, and that extra Google Photos information, such as comments, can be exported in a secondary JSON file (Google Photos Help). Those are three separate places a date can live.

1. Embedded capture metadata
- For many still images, the capture time sits in EXIF tags such as
DateTimeOriginal. - MP4 and MOV videos store dates in container fields that follow QuickTime conventions. The image EXIF tag does not apply to them.
2. Filesystem timestamps
Created, modified, and sometimes accessed times belong to the file on disk. Extracting a ZIP, copying a folder, or importing into an app can set them to the moment of that operation. Changing these values does not alter the capture information stored inside the photo.

The sidecar stores Google Photos-side information for the item. ExifTool forum examples read its photo-taken time from a field named PhotoTakenTimeTimestamp, which holds Unix seconds rather than a formatted date string. The sidecar matters most when the embedded date is missing, or when the date was changed inside Google Photos and the file was not updated to match. Sidecar file naming has varied. Third-party explainers describe a newer .supplemental-metadata.json pattern and older variants, but Google’s help page does not document those names, so check the files in your own export.
#1 Best Overall
- The easiest way to scan photos and documents. Supports 3x5, 4x6, 5x7, and 8x10 in sizes photo scanning but also letter and A4 size paper. Optical Resolution is up to 600 dpi ( PS: two setting: 300dpi/ 600dpi).
- Fast and easy, 2 seconds for one 4x6 photo and 5 seconds for one 8x10 size photo@300dpi. You can easily convert about 1000 photos to digitize files in one afternoon and share with your family or friends.
- More efficient than a flatbed scanner. Just insert the photos one by one and then scan. This makes ePhoto much more efficient than a flatbed scanner.
- Powerful Image Enhancement functions included. Quickly enhance and restore old faded images with a click of the mouse.
Why the wrong date shows up in your app
The symptom usually points to one field. Match what you see against this table before changing any file.
| What you see | Most likely cause | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Many files share the extraction or download date | The app sorts by filesystem time, or no embedded capture tag was found | Compare the file’s modified date with its DateTimeOriginal (or the video equivalent) |
| Metadata is correct, but the library sorts wrong | The app is reading a different date field | Look for a “date taken” or capture-date option in the app’s sort or import settings |
| Dates are off by a few hours or a day | Timezone interpretation or the device clock during capture or scanning | Compare a known photo’s date in Google Photos with the date the destination app shows |
| Photos are fine, videos are out of order | Video container dates, which may be stored in UTC | Inspect QuickTime-group tags on an MP4 or MOV |
Google’s help page also notes that a photo downloaded or scanned from a device with different date and time settings “may be wrong” (Google Photos Help on lost photos). That is a plausible source of hour-level shifts, but it does not mean every Takeout has the problem.

Check before you change anything
- Preserve the export. Keep the original ZIP or extracted folder untouched. Work on a copy on another drive. Do not begin a recursive overwrite on the only copy you have.
- Choose a test set. Pick a still image whose capture date you know, an item whose date you edited inside Google Photos if you have one, and at least one video.
- Inspect the embedded tags. Use ExifTool (free, cross-platform) on each test file. Commands are shown in the next section.
- Compare with the sidecar. Open the matching JSON file next to the media file and find the photo-taken time. Confirm the pairing by name before trusting it.
- Check the destination app. On Windows, File Explorer can show a “Date taken” column: right-click the column headers, choose More…, and tick Date taken. On macOS, Finder’s Get Info panel shows the created and modified dates, which are filesystem values.
Only write a sidecar value into the media file when its embedded field is missing or incorrect. If the embedded date is correct and only the file browser shows the download time, the fix belongs in the app’s settings or the filesystem, not in the photo.
Restoring dates with ExifTool

Inspect a still image
exiftool -G1 -time:all -a -s "IMG_2041.jpg"
The output lists each date tag with its group. Look for EXIF:DateTimeOriginal. If it is present and correct, you do not need to write anything for that file.
Write a missing capture date from the sidecar
The ExifTool forum examples convert the sidecar’s PhotoTakenTimeTimestamp Unix-seconds value and write it to DateTimeOriginal for images, using the -d %s date-format option. The exact syntax depends on how your sidecar is named and what your ExifTool version accepts, so build the command on a test copy first. Two safeguards matter:

Handle videos as a separate batch
Run the same inspection on a video:
exiftool -G1 -time:all -a -s "VID_0113.mp4"
Look at QuickTime-group tags such as CreateDate and MediaCreateDate. These are often stored in UTC, so a correct value can still display at a shifted time in an app that interprets it in local time. The ExifTool forum discussion on QuickTime dates describes this caveat, and it is one reason Google’s JSON may not contain enough timezone context to reproduce the intended local time for every video. Verify the display in the destination app before batch-processing a video library.

Sort out the photo-taken time
If your problem is one of the causes above, the table in the previous section tells you where to look. The sidecar-to-media mapping is the step most likely to need adjustment, since the field and file names vary by export. The forum thread that discusses the PhotoTakenTimeTimestamp mapping is a useful starting reference: ExifTool forum on Takeout timestamps.
Verify the result and keep the safety net
- Open a few known items in the destination app and compare their dates with Google Photos, including one video.
- Check that the timeline order matches capture order, not download order.
- Keep the sidecars and the original export until the imported library is confirmed. Sidecars carry information that media files may not.
Where the official guidance stops
Google’s help documents the separation between embedded timestamps, filesystem timestamps, and the JSON file. It does not provide a repair command, and it does not document sidecar naming in detail. The ExifTool guidance is community-tested rather than a Google specification, and it describes method rather than a guarantee for every Takeout version, format, or application. The Google-side date you see in the web interface is the reference point to check against.
