A Game Pass failure usually becomes easier to solve once you identify where it stops: the game is missing from your library, installation fails or stalls, or an installed game will not start. Record the exact error code, then follow the branch for your platform. On Windows, check account authorization, regional and device compatibility, updates, Store health, and app repair options in that order. On an Xbox console, keep the code and console model and use the current Xbox Support troubleshooting flow; Microsoft’s general Store guidance directs console installation problems there.
Start by classifying the failure
Do not treat “won’t install” and “won’t launch” as the same problem. The symptom determines which checks are useful.

| What you see | Likely area to check first | Information to record |
|---|---|---|
| The game cannot be found, has no Install button, or is absent from the library | Microsoft account, subscription entitlement, region, family settings, device compatibility, or Store availability | Platform, signed-in account, country or region, Windows edition/version or Xbox model, and any compatibility message |
| Installation starts but fails, pauses indefinitely, or returns an error | Store or Xbox service state, updates, authorization, device limits, storage, or a damaged app cache | Exact code, percentage or stage at failure, free storage, and whether other Store downloads work |
| The game appears installed but closes, does nothing, or shows an error at launch | Game/Xbox app state, Windows compatibility, pending updates, account session, or game-specific requirements | Exact launch message, whether the Xbox app or Store also fails, and whether another Game Pass title launches |
Take a screenshot or copy the code exactly, including letters, leading zeroes, and punctuation. A code such as 0x... is more useful to support than a description such as “it just won’t work.” Note whether the problem affects one title or every title: one affected game points toward its availability or compatibility, while several affected games point toward the account, Store, app, Windows, or console environment.

1. Confirm the Microsoft account and entitlement
- Open the Microsoft Store and the Xbox app, if you use it, and verify that both are signed in to the Microsoft account that owns the Game Pass subscription.
- If multiple accounts are listed, sign out of the unintended account and sign back in to the subscribed account. Do not assume the Windows login account and Store account are identical.
- Open the game’s Store listing rather than relying only on a shortcut or a stale library entry. Check that an Install or Play control is present for the current account.
Microsoft identifies account authorization as one reason an app cannot be installed. A missing entitlement can therefore look like a broken download even when Windows itself is working normally.
2. Check region, family settings, and whether the title is still available
- Confirm that the game is offered in your Microsoft Store country or region. Availability can differ by market.
- Review Microsoft family settings if the title is hidden, blocked, or unavailable to a managed account.
- Consider that a game may have been removed from the Store or from the catalog. If the listing no longer offers installation for your account and device, repeated cache resets will not restore it.
These are possible causes, not proof of the cause in a particular case. The listing’s current availability is the decisive check.
3. Verify device and Windows compatibility
Some Microsoft Store games are device-specific. Read the game listing’s requirements and any compatibility warning for your particular PC. If Windows reports that the app is incompatible, look in Microsoft Store for a compatible version instead of repeatedly retrying the same package.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Also note the operating-system context. Microsoft ended free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. That end date does not prove it caused a Game Pass failure, but an unsupported Windows installation can lack current fixes and may not meet a newer game’s requirements. Check your Windows version before treating an installation error as a Store defect.
4. Restart after Windows updates
If Windows was updated recently, restart the PC before changing Store settings. Some Store and gaming components do not complete registration until the restart finishes. After rebooting, open the Xbox app or Store again and retry the same game.

5. Update Windows, Microsoft Store, and the Xbox app
- Open Settings > Windows Update and install available updates. Restart if Windows requests it.
- Open Microsoft Store, select the Store menu, and use its update-check option to install available Store updates. The exact menu wording can vary by Windows release.
- In the Xbox app, check for an available app update and install it. Close and reopen the app after updating.
- Return to the game listing and test the installation or launch again.
Microsoft’s game-installation guidance specifically points users toward current Windows and Store software and asks them to verify that the game is compatible with their Windows version.
6. Close and reopen the affected app
For an installed game that will not launch, exit the game, Xbox app, and Microsoft Store completely, then reopen the app you use to start the title. A stale sign-in token or incomplete update can clear after a full close and relaunch. If only one game fails while another Game Pass title opens, keep the troubleshooting focused on that game’s listing, compatibility, and app state.
7. Reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe
Use this when the Store itself appears broken: pages do not load, downloads remain stuck, or Store buttons do nothing.
- Press Win+R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
wsreset.exeand select OK. - A blank Command Prompt window opens. Leave it alone; Microsoft says it normally closes after roughly ten seconds.
- Microsoft Store should open automatically. Search for the game again and test the Install or Play control.
This procedure targets the Store cache. It does not change your Game Pass subscription, remove installed games, or establish that the game is available for your account.
8. Repair the Xbox app or another supported app
Windows offers a repair action for some apps. It is less disruptive than a reset and should be tried first.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, or other affected app and open its menu.
- Select Advanced options.
- Choose Repair when the button is available, then reopen the app and test the game.
Repair does not remove the app’s data. Microsoft cautions that Advanced options, Repair, and Reset are not available for every app.
9. Use Reset only after Repair fails
If the same app still fails and Windows provides the option, return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > the app’s menu > Advanced options and select Reset. Reset is more disruptive: it returns the app to its default state and can require you to sign in again or re-establish app preferences. Reopen the app, sign in to the subscribed account, and retry the title.
10. Reinstall only the affected app
Reinstalling the Store or Xbox app is a later step, not the first response to a single failed download. Try it only after account, compatibility, updates, wsreset.exe, Repair, and (where appropriate) Reset have failed. Reinstall from Microsoft Store, sign in again, and check whether the game listing now offers installation. Avoid deleting unrelated games or changing system folders while the exact failure remains unknown.
When device authorization or limits are involved
Microsoft’s device-limit troubleshooting scenario describes a maximum of ten devices. Treat that number as an authorization limit in the context of Microsoft’s guidance, not as a guarantee that every Game Pass error is caused by it.
- Review the devices associated with the Microsoft account used by Store and Xbox.
- Remove old or unused devices only when you recognize them and understand the account consequences.
- Sign back in on the current PC and retry the installation.
A device-limit symptom is different from a low-storage symptom. The former concerns account authorization; the latter concerns the PC’s available drive space. The error text should determine which path you investigate.

Installed but refusing to launch on Windows
Separate an app failure from a game failure
Try opening the Xbox app and Microsoft Store independently. If both apps open and another installed Game Pass game launches, the failing title may have a title-specific compatibility or availability issue. If the Xbox app itself will not open or repeatedly signs out, follow the app update, cache, Repair, and Reset sequence instead.
Check the launch context
- Start the game from its current Store or Xbox app listing rather than an old taskbar or desktop shortcut.
- Confirm that Windows has completed pending updates and has been restarted.
- Read the launch error before closing it and preserve the exact wording and code.
- Verify that the PC still meets the listing’s device and Windows requirements.
Do not infer that an installed icon proves the current account is authorized to launch the title. Installation and launch can fail at different authorization checks.
Xbox console: use the current support path
For an Xbox One or another Xbox console, Microsoft’s general Store troubleshooting documentation directs users with console game or app installation problems to Xbox Support. The console support pages identified for installation problems were not available as readable instructions in the source material, so a specific restart, power-cycle, storage-cleanup, or error-code remedy cannot be stated reliably here.
- Write down the exact error code and the full message.
- Record the console family or model and whether the failure affects one game or multiple downloads.
- Check the current Xbox Support troubleshooting flow for that console and code.
- Follow the instructions shown for your hardware and software state rather than applying a PC procedure such as
wsreset.exe. - If support asks for account or purchase details, use the Microsoft account that holds the Game Pass entitlement.
Keep the game title, installation stage, code, and console model together when contacting support. Those details let support distinguish an availability or entitlement issue from a console-specific installation fault.

Common root causes and what the evidence means
| Possible cause | Clues | Appropriate next action |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong or unauthorized account | The game is missing, the listing lacks Install, or the Store and Xbox app show different accounts | Sign in to the account with the subscription and check the listing again |
| Region or catalog availability | The title is unavailable in the current country or has been removed | Verify the Store region and current listing; do not keep retrying a title no longer offered |
| Family settings | A managed account cannot see or install the title | Review the relevant family permissions with the account administrator |
| Device incompatibility | Store displays a compatibility warning or the PC does not meet the listing requirements | Check the compatible version and Windows/device requirements |
| Pending Windows or Store update | The problem began after an update or persists until an app is reopened | Install updates, restart Windows, and reopen the affected app |
| Corrupt Store cache | Store pages or buttons fail, or downloads remain stuck while other Windows functions work | Run wsreset.exe and search again |
| Damaged app state | The Xbox app or Store itself crashes, will not sign in, or ignores controls | Use Advanced options: Repair first, then Reset if offered and necessary |
| Device authorization limit | Microsoft reports an authorization or device-limit condition | Review recognized account devices; Microsoft’s documented scenario uses a ten-device maximum |
Microsoft lists these as possible explanations for Store installation trouble. None, by itself, identifies the cause of an individual failure; the platform, code, listing status, and timing provide the evidence.
Best Value
What not to do first
- Do not repeatedly press Install without recording the error; the code can disappear and the symptom can change.
- Do not reset every app or remove all installed games when only one title fails.
- Do not apply Windows commands to an Xbox console. Console instructions depend on the hardware and current Xbox Support guidance.
- Do not assume Windows 10’s October 14, 2025 support end date is itself the explanation for a particular error.
- Do not change the Store region casually; region changes can affect catalog availability and account behavior.
Information to collect before contacting support
A concise record shortens troubleshooting:
- Platform: Windows PC or Xbox console, including Windows version or console model.
- Failure stage: missing listing, failed or stuck installation, or installed-but-not-launching.
- Game title and whether another Game Pass game works.
- Exact error code and message, copied verbatim.
- Microsoft account used in the Store and Xbox app.
- Country or region and any family-account restrictions.
- What changed immediately beforehand, such as a Windows update or account switch.
- Which steps you already completed and the result of each one.
For Windows, include whether wsreset.exe opened Store normally and whether Repair or Reset was available. For Xbox, include the console model and leave console-specific corrective actions to the current Xbox Support instructions.
Decision guide: the shortest safe path
- Missing from library: verify account, region, family settings, catalog availability, and device compatibility.
- Install fails or stalls on Windows: restart after updates, update Windows and Store, reopen the app, run
wsreset.exeif Store is malfunctioning, then use Repair and Reset when available. - Installed game will not launch: close and reopen the Xbox app, check updates and compatibility, launch from the current listing, and preserve the error code.
- Console installation problem: capture the code and model, then follow the current Xbox Support path rather than guessing at a console procedure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is a Game Pass game missing from the Install list?
Check that the Microsoft Store and Xbox app use the account with the subscription, then verify country or region availability, family settings, device compatibility, and whether the title remains in the Store catalog.
What does wsreset.exe do?
It clears the Microsoft Store cache. Press Win+R, enter wsreset.exe, select OK, wait for the blank Command Prompt window to close after roughly ten seconds, and search for the game again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShould I repair or reset the Xbox app first?
Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps > the app’s menu > Advanced options. Select Repair first when available; use Reset only if Repair fails and the option is offered.
What should Xbox console users do when installation fails?
Record the exact code, message, and console model, then use the current Xbox Support troubleshooting instructions. PC commands and Windows app-repair steps do not apply to the console.
