What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A game launcher can fail to find a Windows Dev Drive for two different reasons: Windows may not identify the volume as a Dev Drive, or Windows may identify it correctly while that particular launcher does not support using it. Check which situation you have before changing storage settings. In an elevated Command Prompt or PowerShell window, run fsutil devdrv query D:, replacing D: with the actual drive letter. The result shows whether Windows treats the volume as a Dev Drive and reports its trust and file-system filter state.
That distinction matters because Dev Drive is a ReFS-based volume intended for source trees, package caches, build output and other development workloads. Microsoft’s setup guidance says, “We do not recommend installing applications on a Dev Drive.” A launcher refusing the volume can therefore be an application-compatibility decision rather than a Windows detection failure.

First determine which layer is failing
“The launcher cannot see my Dev Drive” describes the symptom, not the cause. There are two separate recognition layers:
| What you observe | What it means | Where to troubleshoot |
|---|---|---|
| Windows does not report the volume as a Dev Drive | The designation, storage type, Windows build, policy or mount state is wrong. | Check the drive letter, query the volume with fsutil, then verify Windows and storage prerequisites. |
| Windows reports a Dev Drive, but one launcher omits or rejects it | The operating system recognizes the volume; the launcher may not support that file system or install location. | Check that publisher’s supported file systems and library locations, then use a supported volume if necessary. |
Do not treat a failed launcher selection as proof that Dev Drive is broken. Conversely, do not assume the launcher is at fault until Windows itself confirms the volume’s status.

What a Dev Drive is—and why game installation is not its primary use
Dev Drive is a Windows 11 storage feature built on the ReFS file system. It is optimized for developer workloads such as source repositories, package-manager caches, compiler output, intermediate build files and similar collections that create many file operations. Its design and security-filter behavior are aimed at those workloads, not at guaranteeing compatibility with every consumer application.
Microsoft’s Dev Drive documentation explicitly says that applications are not recommended for installation on a Dev Drive. That is guidance, not a statement that every game launcher will reject every ReFS volume. The available Microsoft material does not establish a universal launcher bug, a blanket prohibition by all game publishers, or a single registry change that makes unsupported software work. A launcher can therefore make its own compatibility decision even when Windows reports the volume correctly.
Keep the two questions separate: “Is this volume a Dev Drive?” and “Does this launcher support installing or storing games there?” The first has a Windows command that answers it. The second depends on the individual publisher’s current requirements and the launcher version you are running.

A stale library path is easy to mistake for a Dev Drive compatibility problem. Confirm the drive letter and mount state that the launcher is actually using.
- Open File Explorer and note the letter shown for the intended volume. If the launcher was configured for
D:but Windows now assigns that volumeE:, the old library path will appear missing even though the data is intact. - Open Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Disks & volumes. Select the volume and verify its current letter, capacity and whether it is online.
- If the Dev Drive is a virtual hard disk (VHD), make sure the VHD is mounted before starting the launcher. A library stored inside an unmounted VHD cannot be discovered by any application.
- For a mounted VHD, open an elevated Command Prompt and run DiskPart. At the
DISKPART>prompt, enterlist vdiskto locate the backing file and confirm that the expected virtual disk is present.
Do not create a new library folder or format the volume merely because its letter changed. Correct the mount or library path first, then repeat the Windows status check.

Run the authoritative Windows status check
Use an elevated terminal so the file-system query has the permissions it needs:
- Open Start, type Command Prompt or PowerShell, right-click the result and choose Run as administrator.
- Run
fsutil devdrv query D:, replacingD:with the letter confirmed in the previous section. Include the colon after the letter. - Read the result for the Dev Drive designation, trust state and file-system filters that are allowed or attached.
The command is useful because it tests Windows’ view of that specific volume rather than relying on a launcher’s file-picker list. A result that says the volume is not a Dev Drive sends you down the Windows setup branch. A result that confirms Dev Drive sends you down the application-compatibility branch.

Trust and filter information is diagnostic context. It can explain how security software interacts with the volume, but it does not certify that a game launcher supports installing to it.
If Windows does not identify the volume as a Dev Drive
Verify the Windows 11 build and machine prerequisites
Microsoft lists Windows 11 build 10.0.22621.2338 or later for Dev Drive, local administrator permissions, at least 50 GB of available space, and at least 8 GB of memory; 16 GB is the recommended memory amount. These figures are setup requirements, not performance measurements. Check the current build in Settings > System > About and make sure the account performing the setup has administrator rights.
If Windows was updated recently, restart the computer before concluding that Dev Drive support is absent. A reboot can be required for a newly installed feature or policy change to become available. After restarting, run the fsutil query again against the intended letter.

Check whether policy has disabled the feature
Enterprise and managed PCs can use policy to control whether Dev Drive is enabled. If the hardware and Windows build meet the listed requirements but the feature is unavailable, ask the organization’s administrator whether a device policy blocks Dev Drive. Do not bypass a company policy by making unapproved registry or security changes; the policy owner needs to authorize the storage configuration.
Confirm that the storage type is supported
Microsoft documents several storage limitations:
- Removable or hot-pluggable media does not support Dev Drive designation.
- A VHD hosted on removable or hot-pluggable media also does not support designation.
- Dynamic disks are unsupported for Dev Drive designation.
Move the workload to supported local storage rather than trying to force a designation on one of those media types. An external enclosure can look like a normal disk in File Explorer while still being classified as removable or hot-pluggable for this purpose.
Account for a VHD moved to another PC
Dev Drive designation, trust and filter settings are stored per machine. If you copied or moved a VHD from one computer to another, do not assume that the designation traveled with the file. Mount the VHD on the new computer and designate it there according to Windows’ current setup process. Then run fsutil devdrv query on the new host to verify the result.
This machine-specific behavior also explains why a volume can appear correctly configured on one PC and ordinary on another. The VHD file may be identical while the host’s designation and policy state differ.
Do not reformat an existing volume as a first repair
Reformatting changes the file system and destroys the data currently on the volume. Microsoft says that preserving the existing contents while reformatting for Dev Drive is unsupported. Back up important files before any storage-level operation, and do not delete partitions, recreate the VHD or format a game library simply to make a launcher list it.

If Windows confirms Dev Drive but the launcher still rejects it
Treat this as an application-support question
When fsutil devdrv query confirms the volume, Windows has already answered the operating-system part of the problem. The remaining issue is whether the specific launcher accepts that volume, its ReFS file system, its mount characteristics or its intended use. The Microsoft documentation reviewed for Dev Drive does not name a particular game launcher, provide a launcher-specific workaround or promise application-installation support.
Open the publisher’s current support documentation for the launcher version you use. Look for requirements covering supported file systems, library locations, virtual disks, removable media and permissions. If those requirements exclude the Dev Drive, create or move the game library to a supported volume instead of trying to disguise the Dev Drive as another file system.
Recheck the path the launcher stores
Launchers often save a complete library path, not just a drive letter. A changed letter, renamed folder, unmounted VHD or missing parent directory can make a valid installation disappear.
- In the launcher’s storage or library settings, view the configured folder path.
- Compare it character-for-character with the folder shown in File Explorer on the mounted volume.
- If the folder is missing, mount the VHD or restore the original letter before adding a new library.
- If the launcher offers an option to add an existing library, point it at the original folder rather than starting a new installation.
Interface labels differ between launchers, so use the exact terminology in that publisher’s documentation. Do not infer support merely because the launcher’s file picker can browse to the drive; browsing and installing can have different validation rules.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse a supported install location when compatibility is uncertain
If the publisher does not document Dev Drive or ReFS support, the predictable workaround is to keep the game library on a volume the launcher explicitly supports. You can reserve the Dev Drive for source code, build artifacts, mod-development files or package caches and use the supported volume for the installed game. This avoids changing a correctly configured Windows volume to accommodate an application whose policy is unknown.

When moving a library, follow the launcher’s own move or repair procedure where available. Copying files manually can leave manifests, permissions or metadata in the old location. Keep the original files until the launcher verifies the new location and the game starts successfully.
Escalate with precise evidence
If the publisher claims Dev Drive support but the launcher still omits the volume, provide support with the information that distinguishes a Windows issue from an application issue:
- Windows 11 edition and build number.
- The drive letter and whether the volume is a physical disk or VHD.
- Whether the host storage is local, removable or hot-pluggable.
- The complete output or relevant status from
fsutil devdrv query, including trust and filter information. - The launcher version, exact error text and the path you selected.
A precise report is more useful than repeatedly changing trust settings or reinstalling the game.

Why Defender and trust settings usually do not fix launcher discovery
Dev Drive trust and Microsoft Defender performance-mode settings concern security scanning and file-system-filter behavior. They can affect scanning overhead or which filters are attached to a volume, but they do not change the launcher’s file-system compatibility rules or guarantee that a library picker will display the drive.
Do not mark a volume as trusted, disable security software or change Defender performance settings solely because a launcher cannot see the drive. Make such changes only for a documented security or performance requirement, with an understanding of the protection trade-off, and never as a presumed launcher fix. If a launcher requires an exception, obtain that requirement from the publisher and apply the narrowest supported change.

A safe order of operations
Use this sequence to avoid destructive or irrelevant changes:
- Identify the exact drive letter, folder path and mount type the launcher is using.
- Confirm the volume is online in Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Disks & volumes.
- If it is a VHD, verify the disk is mounted; use DiskPart’s
list vdiskwhen you need to locate the backing file. - Run
fsutil devdrv queryin an elevated terminal. - If Windows does not identify Dev Drive, check the Windows build, administrator rights, 50 GB free-space requirement, memory requirement, reboot status, policy and supported storage type.
- If Windows does identify Dev Drive, stop changing Windows security settings and check the launcher publisher’s supported locations and file systems.
- Use a supported volume for the game library when the publisher’s guidance is silent or negative.
- Back up data before any format, partition or VHD operation; never reformat an existing volume simply to make a launcher detect it.
This process gives you a defensible answer even when the launcher’s behavior is undocumented: either Windows needs a valid Dev Drive configuration, or the application needs a storage location it officially supports.
