Why a Fully Translated Game Still Shows English in Some Places

A game can be translated and still show English when a label was never included in the translation files, words are part of an image, or the game fails to load the right language resource. The title’s “fifty places” is not a verified industry count: official guidance describes common causes and ways to catch them, but does not say how many English leftovers a typical game has.

Why English remains in a translated game

“Fully translated” can describe the intended localization package or the main text, not a guarantee that every word in every screen and game state has been translated. A translation team can only translate material it receives, and the game still has to display the correct localized material at runtime.

Some text is not in the translation files

A menu label may be written directly into the game’s code instead of being drawn from a language-specific resource. Netflix Games’ internationalization requirements say UI text should be externalized in resource bundles; hardcoded text and text burned into images will not be translated by the ordinary string workflow.

Text in a sign, diagram, button graphic, tutorial screenshot, texture, or video may be pixels rather than a separate text layer. Translating a spreadsheet entry cannot change those pixels: the team needs a localized art or media asset, or a rendering approach that keeps the words separate from the image.

The handoff may not cover every part of the game

Dialogue and menus are only part of what players see. Images, videos, supporting material, sample content, and other interface screens may also need localization. If the translation handoff covers the main script but misses an optional mode, tutorial branch, error message, achievement, downloadable-content screen, or newly added feature, English can survive there.

Context matters, too. Microsoft’s game-localization guidance notes that translators may initially receive dialogue and a script without the surrounding context. Screenshots, builds, style guides, character information, and clear descriptions help them understand where a short or ambiguous string appears and what it means.

The translated resource may not reach the running game

A translated entry can exist in a source folder and still be absent from the shipped package, stored under an unexpected locale or key, or not selected at runtime. On Microsoft’s Xbox Game Development Kit, localized strings and images are packaged as resources; when a title resource is missing, the documented behavior is to use the default resource. That is an example of platform-specific fallback behavior, not a rule that applies to every engine or platform. See Microsoft’s GDK documentation on packaged resources.

Testing may not reach the screen with the leftover text

A correct translation file does not prove the built game has been checked in context. A rare screen, late-game sequence, optional mode, language-switching path, or update can escape testing. Microsoft advises considering separate review and testing of each localized language version; Netflix and Godot also describe pseudolocalization as a way to catch localization and layout problems before release.

What players can check and report

If just one area is in English while nearby menus are translated, the issue may be limited to that string or asset rather than the overall language setting. Check the following before reporting it:

  • Confirm the game’s in-game language setting and the platform’s language or region setting.
  • Install any pending game update. If the game chooses its language at launch, change the setting and restart it.
  • Record the exact screen, the language selected, the game version, the platform, and the steps that bring up the English text.
  • Include a screenshot if possible. A report that shows whether the words are ordinary UI text or embedded in an image gives the developer a useful starting point.

These checks can rule out a setting or update issue, but they cannot identify the cause in an unnamed game. The details in the report help its developer distinguish a missed translation from a packaging, asset, or runtime-selection problem.

How developers can trace the defect

Start at the English text as it appears in the shipping build, then trace it back to its source. The fix depends on whether it is a string, media asset, or resource-selection problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify how the words are rendered. Determine whether they come from a resource-backed string, a literal in code, or an image, texture, or video.
  2. Check the translation entry. Confirm that the target-language text exists under the expected locale and key, and give translators enough context to interpret it.
  3. Check the build that players receive. Verify that the localized resource and any replacement art or media are included in the platform package.
  4. Check runtime selection and fallback. Confirm which locale the game resolves on the affected platform and what happens when a resource is missing.
  5. Reproduce it in the built game. Test the affected screen in the shipping configuration and across supported languages, rather than relying only on a spreadsheet or source files.

For general workflow, Microsoft’s localization overview recommends identifying the full set of user-visible material and separating translatable content so it can be extracted, translated, and reinserted under control.

How to prevent English leftovers

Externalize text and inventory non-text content

Make user-visible text available through localization resources rather than embedding it in code. Inventory text in artwork, videos, tutorials, and supporting screens as well as dialogue and menus. Where wording needs to change by language, keep it separate from the image so it can be translated without rebuilding the message from pixels.

Use pseudolocalization early, then test real language builds

Pseudolocalization substitutes or alters text to expose strings that have not been connected to localization and to reveal expansion problems such as clipping or overlap. Netflix’s requirements describe it as a way to simulate text expansion and identify concatenated fragments. Godot’s internationalization documentation also notes that pseudolocalization can reveal non-localizable strings, text that does not fit, and some missing glyph coverage.

It is an early warning, not a substitute for checking the actual target language. Godot specifically cautions that readable pseudo-localized Latin text does not effectively test Chinese, Japanese, or Korean glyph support, or right-to-left text behavior.

Test coverage, assets, and platform packaging in context

Review localized builds on representative and high-risk screens, including optional and late-game flows, text inside visual assets, language changes, and updates. On platforms that split content into language-specific packages or chunks, check both the package configuration and what is installed. Microsoft’s GDK documentation describes language-tagged chunks and ways to test their installation or force a language chunk.

Localization can also affect dates, numbers, currency, writing direction, typography, layout, audio, imagery, and cultural adaptation. Treating it as a whole-game workflow—not just a translation of dialogue—makes these less visible sources of English easier to find before release.
