Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA free Kindle book can fail to appear for three different reasons: the app or e-reader has not synchronized, the title is hidden by the current library view, or the book was not completed and added to your Amazon account. Start with an internet connection and a manual sync. If the title is still absent, check Manage Your Content and Devices: a title listed there needs delivery to the correct device, while a title missing there requires checking the digital order.
The steps below apply to the Kindle mobile app and Kindle e-readers. They do not assume that a free title has a special delivery process, and Amazon’s published troubleshooting guidance does not provide a universal delivery time or a single cause for every missing book.

First, identify where the book is missing
Before changing settings, determine which list does not contain the title. This prevents you from trying device fixes when the order itself is incomplete, or investigating an order when a simple library filter is hiding the book.

A free price does not remove the need for an account-side acquisition and delivery record. The relevant question is whether the title completed into your account and whether the reading device has received the updated library.

1. Confirm an internet connection
Kindle content must reach Amazon’s servers before the app or e-reader can download it. The first check is therefore connectivity, not the book’s price.
On a phone or tablet
- Verify that the device is connected to Wi-Fi or another working internet connection.
- Open a webpage or another service briefly to confirm that the connection actually works, rather than relying only on the Wi-Fi icon.
- Make sure Airplane mode is off. If Airplane mode is on, the Kindle app cannot contact Amazon until connectivity is restored.
On a Kindle e-reader
- Open the wireless controls and confirm that Wi-Fi is enabled and connected to the intended network.
- Turn Airplane mode off if it is enabled.
- If the network is connected but the e-reader still cannot update, move temporarily closer to the router or reconnect to the network before proceeding.
Do not treat a successful purchase screen as proof that the book has already downloaded. The account transaction and the later device synchronization are separate stages.
2. Manually sync the Kindle app
A manual sync asks the mobile app to check the account for newly acquired content. Amazon’s mobile-app instructions use the path Kindle app > More > Sync now.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the Kindle app.
- Open More.
- Select Sync or Sync now, depending on the label shown in your app version.
- Keep the app open and connected while synchronization runs.
- After it finishes, return to Library and look for the title.
The app’s last-synced date and time should update when the operation completes. If that timestamp does not change, the app did not finish a successful sync; check connectivity again and repeat the operation rather than assuming the book was delivered.
Syncing does not repair an order that never completed. It can reveal a book that is already attached to your account, but it cannot create a missing account record.

3. Manually sync a Kindle e-reader
On a Kindle e-reader, the equivalent command is in Settings. Depending on the software version, the command is labeled Sync My Kindle or Sync and Check for Items.
- Connect the e-reader to Wi-Fi and turn Airplane mode off.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Sync My Kindle or Sync and Check for Items.
- Wait for the sync to finish before opening the library.
- Return to the library and search for the title.
Leave the device connected while it completes. Amazon’s guidance says to wait for synchronization to finish; it does not specify a guaranteed number of minutes or hours for delivery. A title may therefore require a completed sync rather than an immediate appearance after the free order.

4. Remove library filters and search the All view
A book can be present in the account and on the device but hidden by the current shelf, collection, filter, or sort order. Check the library view before changing account settings.
- Open Library in the Kindle app or on the e-reader.
- Choose All rather than a narrower category or collection.
- Clear any active filters.
- Refresh the library if the interface provides a refresh control.
- Search for the exact title.
- If available, sort by Recent so newly added content appears near the top.
The All view is especially important when you normally browse downloaded books, a collection, or another restricted shelf. A filter changes what is displayed; it does not indicate that the title was removed from your account.
5. Check Manage Your Content and Devices
If the title still does not appear, check the account-side content list. Open Amazon’s Manage Your Content and Devices, select Content, then Books, and search for the title.

If the title is listed
A listing confirms that the book is associated with the account. The next task is to send it to the intended reading destination.
- Find the title under Content and Books.
- Select Deliver or remove from device.
- Choose the Kindle e-reader or mobile app destination you actually intend to use.
- Select Make Changes.
- Return to that device and run the appropriate manual sync.
Pay attention to the destination selection. Delivering the title to one registered device does not automatically place a downloaded copy on every device. A phone app and an e-reader can both use the same account while still requiring delivery and synchronization to the selected destination.
If the title is not listed
Do not keep repeating device syncs when the account content list has no record of the book. Move to the digital-order check below. A missing content entry means the account has not exposed a completed title for delivery through this list.
6. Check the digital order when the account list is empty
Open Digital Orders and find the transaction for the free Kindle book. Check whether the order is marked complete.
Completed order
If the order is complete but the title is not yet visible in Manage Your Content and Devices, retry the connection and sync sequence: confirm internet access, run the manual sync, and check the account list again. The account list is the place to determine whether the title is available for device delivery.

Incomplete order
Amazon says an incomplete digital order can be retried or completed with a changed payment method. This does not mean every free-book problem is a payment problem. Use this branch only when the digital-order record itself shows that the transaction did not complete.
Follow the order’s retry or payment instructions, then allow the account record to update. Once the title appears in Manage Your Content and Devices, deliver it to the intended device and sync again.
7. Restart and update a Kindle e-reader
For a Kindle e-reader that remains out of date after connectivity, account delivery, and synchronization checks, Amazon recommends device maintenance: keep the e-reader charged, restart it, and make sure its software is current.
Restart safely
- Keep the e-reader connected to a charger or ensure it has adequate charge.
- Use the device’s restart option rather than repeatedly tapping the library.
- After it reboots, reconnect to Wi-Fi if necessary.
- Run Sync My Kindle or Sync and Check for Items again.
Check software status
Install any software update offered by the e-reader’s settings. An update can address device-level synchronization problems, but it is not a substitute for a completed order or a correct delivery destination. If the title is absent from the account content list, return to Digital Orders instead of treating the e-reader as the root cause.

- Connect the phone, tablet, or Kindle e-reader to the internet and turn Airplane mode off.
- Run a manual sync: More > Sync now in the mobile app, or Settings > Sync My Kindle/Sync and Check for Items on an e-reader.
- Wait until synchronization finishes. In the mobile app, verify that the last-synced time changes.
- Open Library, select All, clear filters, refresh, and search for the title.
- If the title remains absent, open Manage Your Content and Devices > Content > Books.
- If it is listed, use Deliver or remove from device, select the intended device, choose Make Changes, and sync again.
- If it is not listed, open Digital Orders and inspect the order’s completion status.
- If the order is incomplete, use Amazon’s retry or changed-payment instructions. If it is complete, repeat the account and sync checks after the record updates.
- For a Kindle e-reader still failing after those checks, keep it charged, restart it, and update its software.
Common mistakes that make a free book appear to be missing
- Looking only at a filtered shelf: a collection, downloaded-only view, or other filter can hide a newly acquired title. Use All and clear filters.
- Syncing before restoring connectivity: a manual sync cannot retrieve content while Wi-Fi is unavailable or Airplane mode is enabled.
- Choosing the wrong destination: delivery is directed to a selected device. Check the target before selecting Make Changes.
- Assuming “free” means “no order record”: the account still needs a completed digital transaction before the title can appear in the content list.
- Checking only the device: if the title is not in Manage Your Content and Devices, device maintenance is not the first branch; inspect Digital Orders.
- Expecting a fixed delivery deadline: Amazon’s troubleshooting pages do not state a universal delivery-time guarantee. Wait for sync completion instead of relying on an assumed number of minutes.
What these steps can—and cannot—establish
A successful appearance in Manage Your Content and Devices establishes that the account has a title available for delivery. A successful manual sync then gives the selected app or e-reader an opportunity to receive it. If the title appears only after changing the library view, the content was present but hidden by display settings.
Conversely, the official troubleshooting guidance does not identify one universal cause for all missing free books. It also does not promise a specific delivery timeframe or say that buying a new Kindle, charger, cable, case, or other hardware fixes the problem. Keep the diagnosis tied to the location of the missing record: library display, device delivery, or order completion.
