A foldable phone’s cover display can wake or become active for two fundamentally different reasons: the phone may be responding normally to a change between folded and unfolded states, or something may be waking the device while it is closed. Folding-related changes point to external-display and fold-lock settings. Wakes in a pocket, on a desk, or during charging point instead to gestures, notifications, buttons, apps, chargers, cases, or other accessories.
The exact menus differ by handset and software version, but you can usually identify the cause without resetting the phone. First establish whether the event follows the hinge movement; then isolate wake settings, accidental touches, accessories, and third-party apps in that order.

What the cover-screen change means
Foldables have at least two usable displays. In Samsung’s foldable design guidance, the cover screen is the display visible when the device is closed, while the main screen is used when it is open. Android also lets device makers configure what happens when an unlocked phone is folded, so a screen change at the hinge is not automatically a fault.

Some phones keep the current app on the cover display, some show the lock screen, and some ask you to swipe up before continuing. A device may also remain awake if an app is holding a wake lock. Those behaviors are controlled by the phone maker and software version, not by one universal Android switch.

Normal transition versus an unexpected wake

Record the trigger before changing settings. Note whether the phone was folded, whether a notification arrived, whether it was charging, and whether a case or mount was attached. That observation prevents you from treating a normal hinge transition as a hardware failure.
Why the screen switches when you fold the phone
Android’s fold-lock behavior setting allows an original-equipment manufacturer to decide how an unlocked, unfolded device behaves when folded. Depending on the implementation, the phone can move the current activity to the outer display, lock, or require a “Swipe up to continue” action. An app that holds a wake lock can keep the device awake on that app during the transition.
Check fold and external-display controls
- Open Settings and use its search field for terms such as fold, external display, continue apps, screen transition, or fold lock. Menu names vary by model and software release.
- Read the available choices rather than assuming that “continue” means “stay on the main screen.” Select the behavior you want for closing and opening, then test it with one app.
- Check the app’s own multi-window or display settings if only one app changes screens. A media, navigation, or calling app may request a different continuation behavior.
- Install pending system updates and restart once. A setting can appear ineffective until the phone reloads the display service.
Motorola Razr 2024 example
Motorola’s support instructions for the Razr 2024 document an Auto transition option that can show an app on the external display after the phone is closed. The same model also documents an approach gesture that can show the lock screen. These labels are specific to that model and should not be assumed to exist on another Razr generation, a Samsung foldable, or a different manufacturer’s phone.

Why a closed phone wakes in a pocket or on a table
A cover screen that lights without hinge movement is responding to a wake event. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance identifies Lift to wake, Double tap to wake, notifications, accidental side-button presses, third-party apps, and some third-party wireless fast chargers as possible causes.
Disable motion and tap wake temporarily
- Open Settings and search for Lift to wake and Double tap to wake.
- Turn both options off for a test period. Walk with the folded phone in the same pocket where the problem occurs.
- If the unexpected wakes stop, turn one option back on at a time. This identifies the trigger while preserving the gesture you actually use.
Turning off these gestures does not prevent every wake. Notifications, the side or power button, charging events, and authorized accessories can still light the display.
Review notifications instead of silencing everything
Open Settings > Notifications and inspect apps that deliver frequent alerts. For a noisy app, disable lock-screen or wake-related notification behavior while leaving the notification itself enabled, if your model provides that distinction. A notification that arrives while the phone is closed can illuminate the cover screen even when no one touches it.

Prevent pocket and bag touches
Samsung recommends reducing touch sensitivity when accidental contact is suspected and enabling Accidental touch protection. Search Settings for those terms because their location differs by One UI version. A compatible flip or wallet-style case can also block contact with the cover display. Choose one made for the exact handset and verify that it does not press the side button, obstruct sensors, or interfere with the hinge; remove it again if the behavior becomes worse.
Could a case, magnet, or charger be responsible?
Accessories can create a useful diagnostic clue, but they should not be blamed without a controlled test. Samsung notes that some third-party wireless fast chargers may cause unexpected wake-ups. That warning does not establish that every charger, or every wireless charger, causes the problem.
- Power the phone down, remove the case, grip, ring, magnetic mount, and other attachments, then restart it.
- Use it folded and idle for the same period in which the wake normally occurs.
- Repeat while charging with the manufacturer-approved charger or a known-compatible wired charger. Compare the results.
- Reattach one accessory at a time. If the symptom returns, replace or stop using that accessory and check its fit and charging specification.
Samsung UK separately discusses magnetic accessories in the context of unexpected call behavior on a foldable. That guidance does not prove that magnets universally switch a cover display. It does support removing a magnetic mount or grip during diagnosis, especially if the problem began after adding it.

How to rule out an app or wake lock
An application can request a wake lock, schedule alerts, or present a notification that turns the screen on. If the behavior began after installing an app, changing battery settings, or updating an app, treat software as a possible cause.
- Open Settings > Battery (or the model’s equivalent) and inspect apps with unusually high background activity.
- Review Settings > Apps > [app] > Notifications for apps that alert at the exact time of a wake.
- Temporarily pause or uninstall one suspect app, then test the folded phone. Change only one variable at a time.
- Start the phone in Safe mode, using the procedure supplied for your model. Safe mode disables downloaded apps. If the problem disappears there, a third-party app is more likely; remove recent apps or restore them individually until the trigger is identified.
Safe mode cannot prove that the hardware is healthy, and it will not reproduce a charger or hinge sensor problem. It is an isolation test: a change between normal mode and Safe mode narrows the cause to downloaded software or its background behavior.

- Describe the event. Decide whether the screen changes only during folding, wakes while closed, appears after a notification, or occurs during charging or movement.
- Check fold behavior. Search Settings for fold-lock, continue-apps, external-display, or auto-transition controls and select the intended option.
- Test wake gestures. Turn off Lift to wake and Double tap to wake, then repeat the same pocket or desk test.
- Protect against contact. Adjust touch sensitivity and enable Accidental touch protection. Check that the case is not pressing a button.
- Isolate accessories. Remove the case, magnetic mount, grip, and third-party wireless charger. Test with the bare phone and then add items back individually.
- Isolate apps. Review notifications and battery activity, then use Safe mode if a downloaded app appears involved.
- Restart and update. Install the handset’s pending system update and restart after settings changes.
- Escalate persistent faults. Contact the manufacturer for the exact model if the phone repeatedly selects the wrong display, ignores its fold setting, or changes screens with no movement, notification, accessory, or app trigger.
When the symptom suggests hardware trouble
Service becomes more appropriate when the phone reports the wrong folded state, alternates displays while completely still, or continues after gestures, notifications, accessories, Safe mode, and updates have been eliminated. Do not press the hinge, insert objects into it, or attempt an unapproved repair. The symptom alone does not identify a particular failed part, and the official guidance does not establish a universal user repair.
Before contacting support, record the model number, software version, whether the behavior occurs at a specific hinge angle, and a short video showing the event if it is safe to capture. Keep the phone dry and avoid repeated folding tests if the hinge feels rough, the display is lifting, or the device is physically damaged.
Keeping a foldable from waking unexpectedly
- Use only the wake gestures you need; leave Lift to wake or Double tap to wake off if pocket movement repeatedly triggers them.
- Keep Accidental touch protection enabled when carrying the phone in a pocket or bag.
- Choose a case designed for the exact model and hinge, and check that it does not press buttons or sensors.
- Use compatible charging equipment and retest after every accessory change.
- Review notification permissions for apps that do not need to illuminate the lock screen.
- Keep system and app software current, while noting that menu names can change with updates.
The practical distinction is simple: a screen change synchronized with opening or closing is usually a configurable fold-state transition; a wake while closed is usually a trigger that can be isolated. Following that distinction avoids unnecessary resets and gives support useful evidence if a persistent fault remains.
