A Fitbit watch face usually fails to install or sync for one of five reasons: the Google Health app cannot reach the gallery, Bluetooth or internet access is interrupted, the face is incompatible with your model or region, the device needs Wi‑Fi or a firmware update, or the face has been removed by its developer. Start by confirming the exact failure, then work through the checks below in order.
Install or change a face in the Google Health app by opening Connections > your Fitbit device > Watch faces > Clocks, selecting a face and choosing Install. Keep the Fitbit close to the phone while the change is applied.

First identify what is failing
“Won’t install” and “won’t sync” describe different failures. A face may be visible in the gallery but fail during download, while a face already on the watch may work normally even though the phone has stopped syncing health data. The first symptom you see determines which fix is most useful.

| The Watch faces or Clocks gallery shows an internet-connection error on Android | Private DNS and app network access | Turn Private DNS off, force-stop the Google Health app, then reopen it. |
| A face starts downloading but does not finish | Bluetooth, internet, Wi‑Fi requirement or background operation | Keep the Fitbit near the phone, confirm Bluetooth and internet access, and leave the app running. |
| The face is not listed, or disappeared after changing watches | Model compatibility, region availability or developer removal | Check that the face is made for your exact Fitbit model and is still offered in your region. |
| The phone and Fitbit no longer exchange data | General synchronization connection | Restart the Fitbit, run a manual sync and check for conflicting pairings on other phones or tablets. |
| An SpO2 face or app cannot be added | Device firmware | Update the Fitbit to its latest available firmware before trying again. |
Before changing settings, note the Fitbit model, phone model, phone operating-system version and the exact wording of any error. Those details separate a gallery-network problem from a compatibility or regional restriction.

Install the face through the supported path
Use the Google Health app rather than trying to install a clock face from a web browser or an unrelated app store.
- Open the Google Health app on the phone.
- Open Connections and select the Fitbit you want to change.
- Choose Watch faces, then open Clocks if that tab is shown.
- Select a face that is listed for your model and tap Install.
- Leave the Fitbit close to the phone while the installation completes. Keep Bluetooth enabled and avoid force-closing the Google Health app during the transfer.
If the face is listed but the installation control fails, do not repeatedly tap it. Move to the connection and compatibility checks first; repeated attempts cannot make an unsupported face compatible.
Fix the Google Health app and network connection
Keep Bluetooth, internet and the Fitbit close together
Bluetooth carries the nearby connection between the phone and watch, while internet access may be needed to load the gallery or download a larger face. Confirm that Bluetooth is on, the phone has a working internet connection and the Fitbit is within a few feet of the phone. A busy or weak connection can leave a face appearing to install without completing.
Some larger apps and clock faces need Wi‑Fi on Fitbit Sense, Versa, Versa 2 and Versa 3. If you use one of those models and a face or app is unusually large, connect the Fitbit to a known Wi‑Fi network and retry. This is not a requirement for every face, so Wi‑Fi should be treated as a model-and-download check rather than a universal cure.

Allow the app to run in the background
The Google Health app may need to remain active while it transfers the face or synchronizes the device. Check the phone’s battery and background-activity settings so the app is not being suspended immediately after you switch away from it. Also look for pending updates to the Google Health app and install them before attempting another face change.
Review the face’s permissions
Open the clock face’s permission information in the Google Health app and review what it requests. A face that relies on data or sensors may not install or function correctly when required permissions are denied. Grant only the permissions you are comfortable providing; if the face requires a permission your model or phone cannot provide, choose a different compatible face.
Targeted Android fix: turn off Private DNS
If the Watch faces or Clocks tab on an Android phone displays “Oops, looks like there’s no Internet connection”, Google says the gallery error is often caused by a Private DNS setting. This is a targeted remedy for that Android message, not a universal explanation for every failed installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open Android Settings and search for Private DNS.
- Set Private DNS to Off rather than leaving a custom provider enabled.
- Open the app settings, force-stop the Google Health app, and then launch it again.
- Return to Connections > device > Watch faces > Clocks and try the face again.
If the gallery works after this change, you can investigate whether your preferred DNS configuration can be restored without blocking the gallery. If the same message remains, continue with Bluetooth, internet and compatibility checks instead of assuming DNS is the cause.

Restore basic Fitbit synchronization
Restart before changing pairings
Keep the Fitbit beside the phone, restart the Fitbit, then open the Google Health app and attempt a manual sync. A restart clears a temporary Bluetooth or app state without deleting the account or installed content. Confirm that the phone can reach the internet before starting the manual sync.
Check for another phone or tablet using the Fitbit
Synchronization can become unreliable when another nearby phone or tablet is signed into the same account or still has the Fitbit paired. Check devices in the household, including an older phone that is still powered on. If more than one device is involved, follow Google’s platform-specific sync instructions to remove conflicting app or Bluetooth pairings where applicable.
Do not apply an Android pairing procedure unchanged to an iPhone, or vice versa. Bluetooth menus, permission controls and background restrictions differ by platform, so use the steps for the operating system actually connected to the Fitbit.

Check phone and Fitbit compatibility
Meet the current minimum phone operating systems
Google lists iOS 16.4 or later and Android 11 or later as minimum operating-system versions for the Google Health app. A phone can meet the version minimum and still have a compatibility issue if it is one of the models identified on Google’s setup page. Because supported phones and minimum versions can change, verify the current compatibility list when setting up a newly purchased or recently updated phone.
| Phone platform | Minimum version listed by Google | What to verify next |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | iOS 16.4 | Confirm the specific iPhone model is on Google’s compatible-device list. |
| Android phone | Android 11 | Confirm the specific model is supported and that Bluetooth, internet and background permissions are available. |
If the phone is below the listed minimum, updating the Fitbit or reinstalling the face will not correct the underlying app limitation. Use a supported phone or update the phone’s operating system when the manufacturer provides a compatible upgrade.
Confirm the face matches the exact Fitbit model
Clock faces are model-specific. A face that worked on one Fitbit may not be available for a newer or different model because the display, sensors or software framework changed. In the gallery, check the face’s compatibility information rather than relying on its name or appearance.

On Sense and Versa series devices, Google states that the watch cannot exceed 38 installed apps for a clock-face update. If your device is at that limit, remove an unused installed app and retry the update. This limit applies to the installation condition; it does not mean every face is available on every Sense or Versa model.

Consider a developer removal
A face can disappear because its developer removed it from the gallery. In that case, it may no longer appear in search, or it may remain visible in an old selection without accepting a new installation. A replacement face cannot restore a removed listing. For a third-party face that is still listed but fails, contact the face’s developer; Google directs users to the developer for third-party app and clock-face problems.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Account for regional availability
Availability is not identical worldwide. Google states that users in the European Economic Area lost the ability to install third-party apps and clocks from the Google Health app beginning in June 2024. A selection of Google Health and Google apps remains available there, but a third-party clock may be absent or unavailable even when the same face can be installed elsewhere.
This regional rule can look like a broken gallery or an incompatible watch. Check the account’s country or region and the face’s publisher before changing Bluetooth settings. If you are in the EEA and the missing face is third-party, an installation failure may reflect regional availability rather than a problem with your phone or Fitbit.
Update firmware for an SpO2 face or app
If the failed installation specifically involves an SpO2 clock face or app, Google recommends updating the Fitbit device to its latest firmware. Open the Google Health app, check for a device update and complete it while the Fitbit remains near the phone and sufficiently charged according to the app’s instructions. Then return to the face gallery and try the SpO2 face again.
Do not generalize this advice to every clock-face failure. Firmware is the documented first check for the SpO2-specific problem; ordinary faces still require the connection, model, region and app checks described above.
A decision path for the most common cases
The gallery says there is no internet connection on Android
- Search Android Settings for Private DNS and set it to Off.
- Force-stop and reopen the Google Health app.
- Confirm that the phone itself can load another internet service.
- Retry the gallery from Connections > device > Watch faces > Clocks.
The face is visible but installation never completes
- Bring the Fitbit close to the phone and keep Bluetooth on.
- Confirm internet access and leave the Google Health app running in the background.
- Check the face’s permissions and install any pending app update.
- If the Fitbit is a Sense, Versa, Versa 2 or Versa 3 and the download is large, connect it to Wi‑Fi.
- Restart the Fitbit, run a manual sync, and retry the installation.
The face is missing after buying or upgrading the Fitbit
- Open the face’s listing and verify support for the exact new model.
- Check whether the developer still offers the face.
- Check regional availability, especially if you are in the EEA.
- Review the phone’s operating-system and model compatibility with the Google Health app.
The Fitbit will not sync at all
- Keep the watch near the phone.
- Check Bluetooth and internet access.
- Restart the Fitbit.
- Attempt a manual sync in the Google Health app.
- Look for another nearby phone or tablet paired with the Fitbit and follow the platform-specific Google sync guidance for conflicting pairings.
When to contact support
Contact the clock-face developer when a third-party face is listed for your model but will not install after the connection, permissions, firmware and regional checks. Include the Fitbit model, phone platform and exact error so the developer can determine whether the listing is still supported.
For a Google- or Fitbit-developed app or clock face, use Google’s Customer Support flow. Provide the same diagnostic details and state whether the failure is a gallery network error, a failed installation, a missing listing or a general synchronization problem. That distinction prevents support from sending you through unrelated pairing steps.

What not to do
- Do not assume every failed face needs a new charger, replacement watch or repair tool; the documented causes are primarily app access, connectivity, compatibility, regional availability, limits and firmware.
- Do not treat the Android Private DNS remedy as a fix for iPhone failures or for every installation symptom.
- Do not keep retrying a face that is unsupported on the model, removed by its developer or unavailable in your region.
- Do not remove all Bluetooth pairings before checking whether a simple restart and manual sync resolves the problem.
Final checklist
- Use Google Health > Connections > device > Watch faces > Clocks.
- Keep the Fitbit close, with Bluetooth and internet access working.
- Allow the Google Health app to run in the background and review face permissions.
- For the Android “Oops, looks like there’s no Internet connection” gallery error, turn Private DNS off, force-stop the app and reopen it.
- Connect Sense, Versa, Versa 2 or Versa 3 to Wi‑Fi when a larger face or app requires it.
- Restart the Fitbit and attempt a manual sync.
- Check iOS 16.4 or Android 11 minimums, the specific phone model, exact Fitbit model and the 38-app limit on Sense and Versa series devices.
- Check developer removal and EEA third-party availability.
- Update firmware for an SpO2-specific installation problem.
