Why a Chrome Extension Fails to Publish to Medium—and How to Fix It

First identify where the failure happens: an extension may be sending content to a Medium draft, Medium’s URL importer may be failing, Medium’s own editor may not save or publish, or you may be trying to publish the extension in the Chrome Web Store. These are different workflows. Save a copy of your story before troubleshooting; then test publication directly in Medium’s editor.

Identify which publish workflow failed

Medium’s story workflow uses its web editor. An extension may transfer content into that editor, import a page by URL, or rely on a Medium API integration. By contrast, releasing an extension to users happens through the Chrome Web Store Developer Dashboard. Medium’s publishing and editing guidance and Google’s Chrome Web Store publishing guide describe separate processes.

  • Extension popup or button: the transfer from the extension may be failing.
  • Medium editor’s Publish button: troubleshoot Medium, the browser, or the account.
  • Medium URL importer: the source page may not be interpreted correctly.
  • Chrome Developer Dashboard: troubleshoot the extension’s package, listing, authorization, version, or review state—not Medium story publishing.

Before changing settings, copy the draft text into a separate document or clipboard. Medium specifically recommends backing up the draft before disabling extensions in its editor save troubleshooting guidance.

Test whether Medium can publish without the extension

  1. Sign in to Medium and open or create a story in Medium’s web editor.
  2. Paste the backed-up text into the draft and try to save and publish from the editor.
  3. If direct publication works, the problem is narrowed to the extension’s transfer method or integration. If it fails there too, proceed to browser and account checks.

Medium requires sign-in to publish and documents the web editor as its story-publishing route. A successful direct test does not identify which part of an extension is at fault, but it helps separate transfer problems from editor or account problems.

Rule out browser-extension interference

Medium says browser extensions that interfere with the HTML or DOM used to generate its editor can cause autosave errors. That is a documented possible cause, not proof that every extension-related publishing failure has the same cause.

  1. Use an up-to-date Chrome installation on Windows or macOS. Medium supports the full desktop writing and editing experience on the two most recent Chrome versions for those systems; its supported browsers and systems page sets that scope.
  2. Disable browser extensions, reload Medium, and retry with the backed-up text.
  3. If the editor works, re-enable extensions one at a time and retry to identify a possible conflict. This selective re-enable approach is a practical diagnostic step, not a test protocol Medium prescribes.

“Chrome is supported” does not guarantee compatibility with an old Chrome version, a modified browser, every extension combination, or an operating system outside Medium’s stated range.

If Medium’s URL importer fails, use the editor

Medium’s importer may be unable to interpret a source page and show a blank page or an error. Its import troubleshooting guidance and post-import instructions point to a manual fallback:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create a new Medium draft.
  2. Copy and paste the content into the editor.
  3. Restore any missing images or embeds, then check the formatting.
  4. Publish from Medium’s editor. Import or republish only material you have the right to use.

Check whether Medium has restricted publishing on the account

If direct publication still fails in a supported browser with extensions disabled, check for an account restriction or contact Medium support. Medium says publishing privileges may be restricted for new accounts or accounts associated with suspicious activity. Its account-restrictions guidance lists account age, profile completeness, linked social accounts, and prior activity among factors it considers. The article does not establish that any one factor automatically causes a restriction.

Check whether the extension depends on a new Medium API integration

Medium’s API and importing policy says it will not issue new API integration tokens or allow new integrations, while existing tokens continue to work. An extension that needs a newly issued token therefore cannot rely on that route under the stated policy. This does not mean every existing integration is broken: the policy statement alone does not diagnose a particular token, extension compatibility, or API response.

For an existing integration, check the extension developer’s current documentation and the exact error output. If the integration cannot be made to work, use Medium’s editor and manual copy-and-paste workflow instead.

If you meant publishing the extension in the Chrome Web Store

A failure in the Developer Dashboard is unrelated to publishing a story on Medium. Google’s publishing guide describes uploading an extension package through the dashboard and submitting the listing for review. The Chrome Web Store API guide, updated September 25, 2026, identifies these checks:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Two-step verification is required to publish or update an extension.
  • For a new item, complete the listing and privacy tabs before publishing.
  • For an update, increase the manifest version before uploading; an update upload fails if the version has not increased.
  • Check the package, account authorization, and review status in the Developer Dashboard.

How to assess an extension workaround

No particular extension is identified here, so there is no basis to endorse or rank one. Before relying on a workaround, check:

  • Whether it uses Medium API credentials or interacts with the browser and editor manually.
  • Whether it transfers only text or also preserves images, embeds, and formatting.
  • Whether it offers a manual recovery path if URL import fails.
  • Whether it works with your browser and Medium account.
  • Whether its current developer documentation explains its permissions and how it handles content and credentials.

Compatibility and security claims about a specific extension require that extension’s own current documentation; platform guidance alone cannot establish them.
