A 100Hz monitor can show 60Hz because Windows is set to 60Hz, the chosen resolution does not offer a 100Hz mode, or some part of the connection—from the computer’s video output to the monitor’s input—is limiting the signal. Check Windows’ refresh-rate setting first, then verify the exact monitor and connection specifications before changing drivers.

Check the refresh rate Windows has selected

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
  2. If more than one display is connected, select the 100Hz monitor in the display selector.
  3. Look at the refresh-rate menu. If 100 Hz is available, select it, then confirm the selected display’s readout. Microsoft explains that the page shows the selected display’s current resolution and refresh rate, and that the available rates depend on the display’s supported modes: Change the refresh rate on your monitor in Windows.

A rate marked with an asterisk does not support the current resolution; selecting it may change the resolution. Check the displayed resolution after choosing a mode. A game’s frame-rate counter measures rendered frames, not necessarily the monitor’s active refresh rate. Use Windows’ selected-display readout as one check; if your monitor has a signal-information display, it can provide a separate check, but its controls and labels vary by model.

Confirm the monitor supports 100Hz at your resolution and input

Find the monitor’s exact model number and consult its manual or manufacturer specifications. Confirm that 100Hz is supported at the resolution you want and on the specific input you are using—such as HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C. An advertised maximum does not establish that every resolution or input supports that rate. Windows lists supported modes, but the model’s documentation is needed to establish its input-specific limits. MSI also advises checking the monitor’s connection and selected input when refresh rate or resolution is below expectations: MSI monitor refresh-rate troubleshooting.

Check each part of the connection

The signal path may include the monitor input, the computer or GPU output, a cable, and intermediate equipment such as a dock, adapter, KVM, or receiver. Any of these can affect which display modes are available.

  1. Make sure the cable is firmly connected at both ends and that the monitor is set to the input connected to the computer.
  2. Temporarily remove docks, adapters, KVMs, or receivers and connect the monitor directly to the computer. Use a computer output and monitor input documented to support 100Hz at your chosen resolution.
  3. If possible, try another supported output on the computer or input on the monitor.
  4. If the mode is still missing, test with a known-good cable that supports the required resolution and refresh rate. A replacement cable is a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed fix; check the exact ports and mode before choosing one.
  5. Test the monitor on another system, or test another display on the same computer. These checks can help identify whether the limitation follows the monitor or the computer.

Microsoft recommends checking the cable connection, trying another cable or video output, and testing the monitor with another system when troubleshooting external-display issues: Troubleshoot connection to a wireless display or dock in Windows.

Check the graphics driver if the mode recently disappeared

If 100Hz was available before a driver or system update, investigate the display or graphics driver. Microsoft’s external-display troubleshooting includes rolling back a driver when a problem follows an update and reinstalling it if needed. Follow the computer or GPU manufacturer’s instructions for your specific device. Microsoft also lists Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B as a way to reset the graphics driver during external-display troubleshooting; it is a troubleshooting step, not a way to make unsupported hardware modes available. See Microsoft’s external-display guidance.

Retest the setup and identify what is limiting it

  1. Reconnect the intended setup and open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
  2. Select the correct monitor, set the intended resolution, and check whether 100Hz appears and is selected.
  3. If it remains unavailable, note the monitor and computer/GPU models, resolution, monitor input, cable and adapter chain, and the refresh rates Windows lists. These details let the device manufacturer or support team check the precise combination.

There is no established universal ranking of causes for a 100Hz monitor appearing at 60Hz. The supported mode depends on the particular display, source output, resolution, and complete signal path; without those setup details, it is not possible to identify one cause or promise that a particular replacement will resolve it.

Windows version note

Microsoft’s refresh-rate instructions apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, though labels can vary slightly by build. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; the settings path above is most relevant to currently supported Windows installations.
