If a print curls at the corners or comes loose, first work out when it fails. A part that never sticks points to first-layer adhesion; one that sticks and later lifts is usually reacting to cooling and shrinkage. Start with the filament and printer profile, a clean plate, and a correctly placed first layer before changing temperatures or adding adhesive.
First, identify when the print starts to fail
Warping is most visible when a corner or edge rises as the plastic cools and contracts. It is common with large parts and higher-temperature materials such as ABS, ASA, and PC Blend. Poor initial adhesion can also cause a print to warp, shift, or detach, so the appearance alone may not tell you which problem you have. Prusa explains the connection between temperature differences and shrinkage in its warping guide; UltiMaker’s S6 manual also identifies poor adhesion as a cause of warping, shifting, and detachment.

- It never grips, or comes loose near the start: investigate the plate, first-layer placement, and material settings.
- It sticks at first, then a corner rises later: focus on shrinkage, drafts, cooling, and the part’s contact area with the plate.
These failure modes can overlap. A part under strong shrinkage stress is more likely to pull free if its first layer is already marginal.
Fix first-layer adhesion before changing everything else
Use the correct filament and printer profile
Begin with the profile recommended for your exact printer and filament. Temperature and cooling settings depend on the material, printer, and build plate, so there is no single bed-temperature setting that reliably prevents warping. Prusa notes that its material profiles are refined for their intended materials. If you have changed settings, UltiMaker advises checking them and trying a default Cura profile as a comparison. See the Prusa first-layer guide and the UltiMaker S6 manual.

Clean and install the build plate correctly
Fingerprints, residue, and debris can interfere with adhesion. Clean the plate using the method its manufacturer allows, and make sure it is installed as intended. Cleaners are not interchangeable: Prusa recommends wiping its surface with IPA at 90% or higher, while the UltiMaker S6 manual specifies IPA for flexible build plates and water for glass. Follow the instructions for your own plate rather than applying either recommendation universally.
Check leveling and first-layer placement
Level the bed as your printer requires, with both the plate and nozzle clean. The first layer should make consistent contact across the build area, but do not compensate for every adhesion problem by pushing the nozzle closer. Excessive Z squish can damage a steel sheet, Prusa warns. If the first layer remains unreliable, its guide suggests slowing the first three layers to about 75%; for experimental materials, it also suggests trying a 5–10°C heatbed increase. These are contextual troubleshooting suggestions, not settings that apply to every printer or filament.

Reduce corner lift on a print that initially sticks
Add a brim when the footprint is small
A brim adds printed lines around the model’s base, increasing the area that holds it to the bed. It is especially useful for tall objects with small footprints and for multiple small parts. Prusa’s brim guide generally advises a brim of at least 3 mm, but the useful width depends on the geometry and material. Try this slicer adjustment before adding an adhesion product.

Control drafts and ambient temperature by material
ABS and ASA often benefit from a warmer, more stable printing environment. A compatible enclosure may help, and a draft shield can retain heat near the part. The goal, as Prusa puts it in its warping article, is to “minimize the thermal shock the printed part receives so it doesn’t warp as much.”

- 【Strong Adhesion】Liquid 3D printer glue is specially developed for 3D printing; it ensures consistent grip even during high-speed printing, prevents model lifting or warping, ensures a perfect first layer, and thereby increases printing success rates while reducing waste of filaments and time.
- 【Durable】The 3D Printer Glue provides strong bonding properties, requiring just a small amount per print. With 60ml, you can achieve lasting adhesion over many prints. For optimal results, it is recommended to reapply the glue before each printing session.
- 【Easy Print Release】Enjoy effortless removal of 3D prints after cooling, ensuring a hassle-free post-printing experience with 3D printer bed adhesive.
- 【Wide Compatibility】Ideal 3d printer bed adhesion solution for PLA, PETG, PET, ABS, ASA, and TPU. Adheres well to diverse 3D printing surfaces such as low-temperature, high-temperature, textured/smooth build plates, glass, PEI, PEO, PET, Buildtak, and aluminum plates, etc.
- 【Easy to Apply】Experience a mess-free process with Bamboo Lab 3D print glue. Simply press the applicator head to open the valve and spread evenly over the printing area. Its liquid form ensures a more uniform and quicker application compared to solid 3d printer glue stick for hot bed.
Do not apply that advice indiscriminately: PLA and PETG need cooling and may not be good candidates for enclosure printing. Excessive fan cooling can encourage lift on a high-warping material or weaken bonding between layers; too little cooling can also cause problems for materials that need it. Prusa’s material-specific guidance covers ABS and ASA.
Consider speed and part orientation
For a material prone to warping, slower printing may give the part more time to settle and improve layer bonding. If a particular corner keeps lifting, orient that area toward the center of the bed where practical. Prusa also suggests adding a small sacrificial feature near a troublesome spot; it can take the lift instead of the model’s corner. These options are most useful after checking the profile, plate, and surrounding temperature.

Use adhesive only when the plate and filament allow it
Adhesion products are not universal fixes. Prusa says a thin layer of glue stick on a cold steel sheet can improve adhesion and act as a separation layer that protects the sheet. Check the instructions for your specific plate and filament before using glue or another surface treatment. Some materials can bond too strongly to PEI: Prusa cautions that PETG or PC may adhere excessively when the first layer is adjusted too close.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Watch the failure point: note whether the first layer never holds or whether a corner lifts only after the print has been underway.
- Restore the intended profile: select the recommended printer-and-filament profile before experimenting with temperatures or cooling.
- Clean and check the plate: use only its approved cleaner, confirm it is installed correctly, and remove residue or debris.
- Verify the first layer: check leveling and placement, avoiding excessive nozzle squish.
- Increase contact area: add a brim for a small footprint, tall part, or group of small models.
- Address the environment: for ABS or ASA, reduce drafts and consider a compatible enclosure; preserve the cooling required by PLA or PETG.
- Make one change at a time: if lift persists, try an appropriate speed or orientation adjustment, then consider an approved adhesive.
This order keeps low-risk checks ahead of more material- and surface-specific changes. When comparing remedies, account for the filament and printer profile, plate type, part footprint and height, drafts, and the stage at which the failure begins.
