Verdict: WHOOP 4.0 remains a focused, screen-free coach for sleep, recovery and training load, but it is legacy hardware. WHOOP 5.0 and WHOOP MG are now the current devices. The 4.0 makes sense mainly for existing owners or a substantially discounted used unit whose membership eligibility, battery and charger are confirmed.
It is not a smartwatch or a complete sports watch: there is no display, GPS, clock, notifications, maps or live workout data. Its value comes from continuous sensing and the WHOOP app’s Sleep, Recovery and Strain models.

| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Best for | Sleep- and recovery-focused athletes, especially people who already own a smartwatch |
| Display and GPS | Neither; the experience is smartphone-dependent |
| Battery | About five days when new, according to WHOOP; independent reviews generally found four to five days |
| Membership | Required for the core WHOOP platform; current plans are centered on WHOOP 5.0/MG |
| Current status | Legacy hardware, replaced by WHOOP 5.0 and WHOOP MG |
WHOOP announced 4.0 on September 8, 2021, as a 33% smaller successor to 3.0 with a claimed five-day battery. Its launch specifications are documented by WHOOP. The current WHOOP product page now positions 4.0 as a legacy option alongside newer hardware.

What WHOOP 4.0 looks like
The understated SuperKnit fabric band hides most of the electronics in the clasp and sensor assembly. There is no screen or button-driven interface to distract you during the day or at night. WHOOP can be worn on the wrist, on the upper arm with a bicep band, or in WHOOP Body apparel designed to hold the sensor elsewhere on the body.

How the WHOOP experience works
Sleep
WHOOP estimates sleep duration, sleep need, sleep performance, consistency, disturbances and stages. Sleep Coach uses recent sleep, exertion and accumulated sleep debt to suggest a bedtime or wake time. “Sleep need” is therefore a target model, not simply the number of hours you slept last night.
Recovery
Recovery is a readiness-style score influenced by HRV, resting heart rate, respiratory rate, sleep, recent Strain and other logged or inferred factors. It can help you decide whether to push, maintain or ease off, but it is not medical clearance or a diagnosis.
Strain
Strain is WHOOP’s proprietary estimate of cardiovascular load over the day and during detected activities. It is useful for relating exertion to Recovery, but it is not a universal unit and should not be compared numerically with Garmin Training Load, Apple training load or a laboratory measurement.

Other measurements and coaching
- Heart rate, resting heart rate and HRV
- Respiratory rate
- Blood-oxygen estimation (SpO2)
- Skin-temperature measurement
- Health Monitor trends
- Workout detection and post-workout details
- Journal entries linking habits with sleep and Recovery
- Haptic Sleep Coach alarm
These are consumer wearable estimates. SpO2, temperature and sleep stages should be treated as context and trends, not substitutes for a pulse oximeter, ECG, clinician or sleep study.
Comfort, fit and everyday wear
Independent coverage is broadly positive. Which? measured its tested unit at approximately 27 grams and 25.1 × 36 × 10.3 mm, describing it as light, slim and comfortable. Wareable likewise found it discreet and easy to wear.
- The fabric can become wet or soggy after swimming or showering and may retain sweat.
- Wash and rotate bands, and keep the fit snug without cutting off circulation.
- A loose or moving sensor can reduce data quality.
- Upper-arm placement can be preferable for lifting, contact sports or wearing a watch.
- The low-profile, screen-free design is particularly unobtrusive during sleep.
Battery, charging and water resistance
WHOOP claims approximately five days for a new 4.0. Independent reviews from Wareable and Tom’s Guide generally report about four to five days in normal use. Actual runtime depends on battery age, firmware, temperature, wear location and sensor activity. A used unit can perform materially worse.

- HSA/FSA Eligible - All 12-month WHOOP memberships and battery packs qualify for HSA/FSA reimbursement.
- Screenless, Distraction-Free - No screen, no buzzing notifications. WHOOP focuses entirely on your health and performance, with up to 14+ day battery life so you can wear it around the clock.
- Heart Screener with On-Demand ECG - Take an ECG reading from your wrist in seconds to check for signs of atrial fibrillation. Heart Screener gives you a medical-grade view of your heart rhythm whenever you need it.
- 24/7 Health Insights - WHOOP monitors your heart rate every second of every day, delivering personalized Sleep, Strain, Recovery, VO2 max, Menstrual Cycle, and Heart Rate insights along with a Real-time Stress Monitor that pinpoints your stressors and shows how your body responds in the moment, so you can make better decisions about training, rest, and daily performance.
Battery Pack 4.0 slides over the sensor so you can charge while wearing it, avoiding a gap in sleep or workout data. The pack and band are separate failure points, so verify both when buying used. WHOOP 4.0 charging accessories are not compatible with WHOOP 5.0 or MG, according to Tom’s Guide.
Which? reports an IP68 rating for its tested unit and says the manufacturer permits swimming in chlorinated or salt water, while Wareable describes it as 5ATM water-resistant. These are different specifications from different sources, not interchangeable proof of indefinite waterproofing. Avoid diving and high-pressure water, and dry the fabric after swimming.
Fitness tracking: strengths and omissions
WHOOP 4.0 is strong at all-day cardiovascular-load estimation, workout Strain, Recovery trends and explaining how exertion affects sleep needs. Its lack of a screen is a benefit for people who do not want notifications or constant metrics.

- Google Fitbit Air is the unbelievably comfortable, exceptionally smart way to transform your health[1]; and Google Health brings together effortless tracking and adaptive coaching to help make the most of your everyday[2]

- Comfortable fit - One Size Tracker (130-210 mm): The lightweight, micro-adjustable fit sits comfortably and quietly, so you can wear Google Fitbit Air through work, play, and sleep; advanced sensors and new algorithms power more accurate, precise health tracking, 24/7[1]
- Designed for every occasion: With no screen to distract you or disrupt your style, your tracker moves seamlessly from bracelet to workout band to sleep band, and you can change looks in seconds – just press the pebble in, click, and go
- Long battery life: Google Fitbit Air’s battery lasts up to a week, and fast charging gets you one day of battery life in just five minutes[6,7]
It is weak as a primary training watch. There is no GPS, route, pace, maps, clock, notifications, live heart-rate zones or structured workout display. Wareable and Which? both found workout tracking limited. Serious runners, cyclists and triathletes will usually need a Garmin, Apple Watch, bike computer or another live-data device alongside WHOOP.
App experience and data interpretation
Each morning, the app presents Sleep, Recovery and Strain cards. Before training, Recovery and Sleep Coach can inform your planned intensity; afterward, workout detection and Journal entries help connect behavior with outcomes. Health Monitor and historical trends are useful for spotting patterns over time.

Accuracy: what can reasonably be claimed
Do not call WHOOP 4.0 “the most accurate” without a defined comparator and test condition. Optical heart-rate readings, sleep duration, sleep stages, HRV trends, auto-detection and the usefulness of Recovery or Strain are separate questions. Independent reviewers found it useful for observing trends, but available coverage does not establish clinical validation across every activity, skin tone, body location or physiological condition.
- Wear it continuously and keep the fit stable.
- Allow the system time to establish a baseline after setup.
- Expect gaps after removal, poor synchronization, a depleted Battery Pack or unusual activities.
- Do not treat one low score as illness or one high score as proof that injury is impossible.
- Do not train solely from a single day’s score or equate estimated sleep stages with polysomnography.
Subscription and true ownership cost
WHOOP is membership-first. The hardware historically came bundled with membership and is not useful as a conventional standalone tracker without access to the platform. Current plans and included devices are designed around WHOOP 5.0 and MG, so a used 4.0 is only worthwhile if your account can use it.
| Cost consideration | What it means |
|---|---|
| Historical WHOOP 4.0 pricing | Wareable reported $30 monthly, $239 yearly or $399 for two years when its review began; these are historical figures, not current quotes. |
| Current membership context | Wareable and Tom’s Guide report U.S. annual signals of about $199 for One, $239 for Peak and $359 for Life; confirm country and checkout pricing at WHOOP membership. |
| Used 4.0 | Confirm membership eligibility, transfer/deactivation, battery health, Battery Pack 4.0, clasp and sync before paying. |
| Ongoing extras | Replacement SuperKnit or bicep bands and a replacement charger add cost; availability varies by region. |
| Total system cost | If you also need GPS and live metrics, budget for a second watch or bike computer. |
WHOOP 4.0 versus WHOOP 5.0
| Area | WHOOP 4.0 | WHOOP 5.0/MG |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Legacy hardware | Current hardware and membership focus |
| Battery | About five days when new | More than 14 days reported by Tom’s Guide |
| Size and processor | Baseline | Approximately 7% smaller/thinner and a processor described as 60% faster by Tom’s Guide |
| Charger | Battery Pack 4.0 | New charger; 4.0 pack is incompatible |
| Core concept | Screenless sleep, Recovery and Strain coaching | Same basic concept with newer hardware and features |
Existing owners do not automatically need to upgrade if their metrics and battery remain adequate. For a new buyer, the current device is normally the safer choice unless a 4.0 is unusually inexpensive and membership compatibility is confirmed. The largest everyday upgrade is battery life rather than a completely different WHOOP experience.

Buying a used WHOOP 4.0: checklist
- Confirm the sensor powers on, syncs and can be transferred or deactivated correctly.
- Ask for recent real-world battery performance, not merely “holds a charge.”
- Verify that Battery Pack 4.0 is included and charges normally.
- Inspect the clasp, sensor window, contacts and fabric for damage, corrosion or heavy wear.
- Confirm your region and membership can use the 4.0 before completing the purchase.
- Prefer a seller with a return period; a low sticker price is not a bargain if the account or charger fails.
