Soulbound: Turnbattle is the Minecraft mod that most directly answers the question “What if Minecraft had Deltarune-style battles?” Created by Pixelcite, it replaces ordinary real-time attacks with turn-based, bullet-hell encounters and adds RPG progression, party play and roguelite runs. It supports Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1 and 1.20.1 on Fabric, although the 1.21.1 build is the actively updated target.
What Soulbound: Turnbattle changes
Soulbound is not a small combat tweak. Pixelcite describes it as a “massive overhaul mod” combining EarthBound, Deltarune and Undertale mechanics. Battles become menu-driven, turn-based encounters in which enemies use patterned projectiles and the player must make tactical choices while dodging attacks.

- Rolling health: damage presentation and recovery work differently from standard Minecraft hearts.
- Soul Traits: passive traits define character strengths and build identity.

Encounters can contain multiple enemies, so turn order and target selection matter. The project also documents co-op battles. A planned or in-progress NPC party-member system is intended to help solo players, but the project marks that feature as work in progress rather than a finished substitute for human teammates.
Normal mode and the roguelite option
Normal mode
Normal mode provides the broader progression framework: classes, equipment, stat points, Soul Traits, skills and a bestiary. It is the closest fit for players who want a persistent Minecraft adventure with a dedicated combat system.

Rogue-Lite mode
Rogue-Lite mode is described as a run-based deck builder. Players combine skills into special builds during a run, making experimentation and adaptation more important than following one permanent character setup. Because it is run-based, it offers a different pace from the longer progression of Normal mode.
The Deltarune-style visual update
Official version 1.3.15 added a new Deltarune battle visual style. The release also includes configurable support for returning to the older style, new animations and a TP bar that changes according to whose turn it is. Run was moved into the Mercy submenu, and battle-menu buttons gained audio feedback.

The same changelog records fixes for multiplayer battle-intro display and defense damage reduction. Those changes matter particularly in co-op, where a visual desynchronization or inconsistent damage calculation can make turn-based combat difficult to follow.
Can you play it on Minecraft 1.21.1?
Yes. Modrinth and CurseForge list Soulbound for Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1 and 1.20.1 with Fabric support. CurseForge specifically warns players to use the 1.21.1 version because the 1.20.1 version is no longer being updated.

Download counters are platform snapshots, not a permanent popularity ranking: CurseForge recorded 43,806 downloads in 2026, while Modrinth recorded 104.6K in 2026. Both figures can change as the platforms update their counters.
How to install Soulbound: Turnbattle
- Install the Fabric loader for the Minecraft Java Edition version you plan to use, preferably 1.21.1.
- Download the Soulbound file matching that exact Minecraft and Fabric version from its current project page.
- Place the mod file in the instance’s
modsfolder, then launch the Fabric profile once to verify that the game recognizes it. - For multiplayer, install the compatible mod on both the client and the server. Every player should use matching Minecraft, Fabric and Soulbound versions.
- Check the project’s current dependency instructions. The project lists Caxton for battle damage numbers and says the Fantasy dependency is baked into the mod, so do not assume Fantasy must be downloaded separately.
If a server fails to start, first check that the loader, Minecraft version and mod build match on every side. A client-only installation will not provide the documented server and co-op battle features.

Default controls
The project lists these default hotkeys:

These are defaults, not guaranteed permanent bindings. Configuration changes or later releases may alter them, so check the in-game controls if a key does not respond.

DeltaCombat is a separate Undertale- and Deltarune-inspired option by motojuster702. Its design emphasizes spells, weapons, attack patterns, strategic dodging and interactive enemy behavior. It supports Forge and NeoForge on Minecraft 1.20.1 and 1.21.1. Its project page explicitly says that it does not add the Soul system.

Choose Soulbound if you want the complete Soul/Graze/TP/Mercy layer, deeper character progression and a roguelite mode. Choose DeltaCombat if your priority is a spell-focused system and your modpack already uses Forge or NeoForge.
