For a honeybee cluster hanging in the open, call a local beekeeper who collects swarms. If bees are flying into a wall, roof, soffit, chimney or another cavity, call a specialist who performs structural bee removals (often called a cut-out), not a routine swarm collector. Swarm pickup may be free or fee-based; structural work is normally quoted locally because access, height, comb removal, sealing and repairs change the job.
First, determine whether it is a swarm or an established colony
The right call depends on where the bees are and what they are doing. A swarm is a temporary cluster, usually hanging from a branch, fence, eave or other exposed surface. It forms when part of a colony leaves with a queen and pauses while scout bees search for a permanent nest site. The cluster can look dramatic, but university and state guidance generally describes a safely positioned swarm as relatively docile compared with a colony defending a nest.

An established colony has occupied a cavity and is using it as a nest. Repeated traffic through a crack or hole in a wall, roof, soffit, chimney, utility chase or similar space is the key warning sign. Bees entering and leaving a fixed opening are not a simple “pickup” job: the cavity may contain comb, honey, brood and residue that must be removed, and the entrance must be sealed after the bees are gone.

| What you see | Likely job | Who to call |
|---|---|---|
| A single, exposed cluster with no regular flight path into a structure | Open-air swarm collection | Local beekeeper who collects swarms |
| Bees repeatedly entering a hole or crack in a building | Established colony removal | Bee-removal specialist experienced with structural cut-outs |
| Bees in a chimney, high roofline or inaccessible cavity | Structural removal with access and repair considerations | Specialist who can explain equipment, access, cleanup and sealing |
If you are uncertain, send a clear photograph of the cluster and the building entrance to the provider. A beekeeper can often tell whether the job is an exposed swarm or a cavity colony before arriving.

Who to call for an open-air honeybee swarm
Start with a local swarm-collecting beekeeper
Search for a beekeeper who specifically says they collect or relocate honeybee swarms. “Beekeeper” alone does not guarantee that the person takes calls, climbs to difficult locations or handles removals. The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension cautions that not all beekeepers collect swarms and that some charge a fee.
Use local organizations when the first call fails
If you cannot find a collector quickly, contact a county cooperative extension office or a local beekeeping association and ask for current referrals. Extension offices and associations may maintain volunteer or commercial lists, but directories are seasonal and location-specific. Delaware, for example, publishes separate 2026 lists for swarm collections and cut-outs; other states and counties use different systems. Confirm that a listing is current, serves your address and covers your type of job before relying on it.
Act promptly, but do not chase the bees
A swarm may leave within hours. If it is safely away from people and animals, leaving it undisturbed while you make calls is reasonable. Try another collector if the first person does not respond. Do not shake the branch, hose the cluster, throw objects at it or use smoke, aerosol insecticide or household chemicals.
Who to call when bees are in a wall or other structure
Ask for a structural bee removal or cut-out
Tell the caller that bees are entering a cavity and ask whether they perform live structural removal or “cut-outs.” The work may require opening siding, soffit, drywall, roofing, trim or masonry; removing the adult bees and queen; taking out every section of comb; cleaning honey and wax; and sealing the entry so another swarm cannot move into the same space.

Some providers remove only the bees and leave comb in place. That can leave attractants and residue inside the building, so ask exactly what is included. UF/IFAS guidance recommends discussing colony remains and any structural repair with the hired specialist.
Do not treat a cavity colony as a DIY project
Untrained removal can expose you to stings, falls, electrical or plumbing hazards, contaminated materials and hidden comb. Opening a wall without a plan can also release bees into the building. Do not climb onto a roof, cut siding or drill into the cavity to “see what happens.” Let the specialist explain the access point and who will restore it afterward.
What to do before the provider arrives
- Establish a safe perimeter. Keep children, visitors and pets away from the cluster or flight path. Close nearby windows and doors if bees are approaching the building.
- Leave the bees alone. Do not spray, swat, burn, flood or disturb the cluster. Agitation can trigger defensive behavior even when a swarm is normally calm.
- Observe from a distance. Note whether the bees are in a free-standing cluster or using a fixed opening, how high the location is, and whether people must pass nearby.
- Take photographs. Use a zoom from a safe position. Include one close view of the bees and one wider view showing the branch, wall, roofline or access constraints.
- Send the images with your address and timing. Explain when you first noticed the bees, whether anyone has been stung, and whether the activity is increasing.
- Follow the provider’s instructions. A collector may ask you to keep the area clear until arrival; a structural specialist may need access inside and outside the building.
Seek urgent medical help for anyone with signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as trouble breathing, swelling of the throat or face, dizziness or widespread hives. That emergency response is separate from arranging removal.
Questions to ask before hiring anyone
Use the first call to classify the job and establish the scope. Cornell guidance specifically recommends discussing timing, vegetation trimming and cost; the additional questions below address the work involved in structural removals.

- When can you arrive, and how long will the work take?
- Will vegetation be trimmed to reach the cluster, and is that included?

- Are drywall, siding, roofing, masonry or paint repairs included, or do I need a separate contractor?
- What equipment or access will you need, such as a lift, roof access or interior opening?
- What is the complete written price, including travel, disposal, cleanup and return visits?
- What licenses or registrations are required for this work in my jurisdiction?
Ask the provider to separate optional repairs from the removal itself. A low initial number may exclude opening and closing the structure, debris disposal or sealing the cavity.
What honeybee removal costs
There is no authoritative national price
Public extension and government sources reviewed for this subject do not establish a nationwide fee or average. Some local guidance says many swarm collections may be free, while UF/IFAS’s Florida-oriented guidance says providers usually charge fees. The only reliable way to know your cost is to obtain a quote from someone serving your location.
Fees vary because an exposed cluster and a colony inside a building are fundamentally different jobs. A collector may place a box under a low branch and leave after the bees settle. A cut-out can require ladders or lifts, protective equipment, opening and rebuilding a wall, comb disposal, cavity cleaning and sealing.

How to interpret a published commercial estimate
A commercial guide published by Honey Bee Rescue on May 15, 2026, estimates U.S. bee-removal jobs at $150–$600 and structural cut-outs at about $400–$1,500 or more. Those figures are that company’s estimates, not a government or university survey and not a national average. Treat them only as an orientation point; your local quote may be lower or higher depending on access, height, urgency and restoration work.

| Job type | Price information supported by available guidance | Why the final quote changes |
|---|---|---|
| Open-air swarm collection | May be free in some communities; some beekeepers charge a fee | Distance, height, difficulty, timing and whether the collector relocates the bees |
| Accessible structural colony removal | No authoritative national range; obtain a local estimate | Opening size, comb and residue removal, cleanup, sealing and repairs |
| Difficult or high structural cut-out | Honey Bee Rescue’s May 15, 2026 commercial guide estimates about $400–$1,500 or more | Lifts, roof work, masonry or siding removal, extensive comb and restoration |
Do not convert an individual provider’s price into a national “standard.” Ask whether the quote is a flat total or an initial charge that can increase after the cavity is opened.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a structural removal should cover
Access and discovery
The specialist identifies the entrance and traces the colony’s location. Bees may be several feet from the visible hole, so the opening plan should be agreed before work begins. Height, ladders, roof pitch and nearby power lines affect both safety and price.
Removal of the colony and nest material
A complete job addresses adult bees, the queen, brood, comb, honey and wax. Leaving comb or honey behind can create odors, leaks or an attractive space for future insects. Ask how the provider will contain and dispose of debris and whether any live bees remaining after the main removal require a follow-up visit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSealing and restoration
The original entry point should be sealed after the cavity is cleaned. Sealing alone without removing nest material is not a complete solution. Clarify whether the beekeeper replaces siding, drywall, roofing, soffit or trim, or whether a roofer, carpenter or mason must be hired separately. Get those responsibilities in writing.

Licensing and local rules
Requirements differ by jurisdiction. Florida provides a useful example, not a nationwide rule: UF/IFAS describes registered beekeepers performing live removals and licensed pest-control operators performing eradication. Other states and cities may use different categories or permits. Ask the provider which credentials apply where you live and verify them with the relevant state or local agency when necessary.
Do not assume that a pest-control license automatically means the person offers live relocation, or that a beekeeper is authorized to perform every type of structural work. The service, method and local law must match.
Should you wait for a swarm to leave?
Waiting can be reasonable when the cluster is outdoors, safely separated from people and animals, and not attached to a building. A swarm is temporary and may move on while scouts select a nest site. Keep monitoring from a distance and arrange a collector promptly if you want relocation, because the window may be short.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not wait when bees are entering a building, when the cluster blocks a doorway or walkway, when someone in the home has a serious sting allergy, or when children and pets cannot be kept away. In those cases, keep the area isolated and arrange an appropriate specialist.
Common mistakes that increase risk or cost
- Calling a general exterminator without describing the cavity. You may receive an eradication quote when you wanted live removal, or a technician who does not open and restore structures.
- Accepting “bee removal” without a written scope. Confirm comb, honey, debris, sealing, disposal and repairs before work starts.
- Using insecticide on a swarm. Spraying can kill bees, contaminate the area and make later live collection impossible; it does not remove comb from a wall.
- Blocking the entrance immediately. Sealing active bees inside can drive them into the building or create another exit. Let the specialist plan the sequence.
- Climbing to get a better photograph. A fall is a greater immediate hazard than the cluster. Use a zoom lens from the ground.
- Assuming a directory is current. Volunteer lists and seasonal contacts change. Confirm availability, service area and job type on the phone.
- Comparing only the first number. A quote that excludes repairs or cleanup may cost more than a higher all-inclusive estimate.
A simple call script
You can give a provider the information needed for a useful first estimate in one sentence: “I have a honeybee cluster [location], about [height or size], first seen [time], and bees are [just clustered outdoors/entering a hole]. I can send photos. Do you collect or remove this type of colony, when could you come, and what would the total fee include?”
For a cavity, add: “Please tell me whether your price includes opening the structure, removing comb and residue, sealing the entry and repairing the opening.” This prevents an open-air swarm price from being mistaken for a structural-removal price.
What to remember
Call a swarm-collecting beekeeper for a free-standing cluster and a structural-removal specialist for bees established inside a building. Keep people and pets back, do not disturb or spray the bees, and send a photograph from a safe distance. Because there is no authoritative nationwide fee, request a local written estimate. Swarm collection may be free or charged; structural cut-outs cost more when they require access, comb and residue removal, sealing and building repairs. Confirm the full scope, credentials and responsibility for restoration before agreeing to the work.
