In a hosted AI setup, the game studio or publisher is usually billed first through its provider account. The operator may absorb that expense, recover it from the game’s wider revenue, or pass some usage cost to players through credits or purchases. Local inference replaces a metered cloud bill with hardware, engineering, and maintenance costs.

“Free-to-play” describes access, not operating costs

A free-to-play game lets a player start without buying the game upfront. It does not mean that every service behind the game is free to the operator. AI inference—the computation used to generate dialogue, recognize speech, create images, or run other model-powered features—still consumes resources.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Those resources can be rented from a hosted provider, operated on the publisher’s own servers, delivered through a middleware license, or processed on a player’s device. Each arrangement puts the invoice in a different place and makes the cost grow in a different way. A player who pays nothing for access can therefore be using a feature that the publisher pays for on every request.

The important distinction is between the immediate invoice holder and the ultimate economic bearer. A studio account may receive the cloud invoice, while the business ultimately funds it from subscriptions, advertising, in-app purchases, or general operating capital. In another design, the player’s credit balance is charged directly.

Four ways AI inference gets funded

1. The publisher or developer account pays

Account billing is the ordinary arrangement for a hosted AI feature. The game operator creates an account with the AI or infrastructure provider, supplies a payment method, and is charged for the usage generated by its game. PlayKit’s Credits & Costs documentation describes this as “account billing (you pay).” It gives casual games and games without a player-monetization requirement as examples of when account billing can be used.

From the player’s point of view, the feature can appear free. From the operator’s point of view, each request may add a metered charge. The publisher can treat that charge as part of the game’s operating expense, just as it treats hosting, analytics, customer support, or content production. Whether the game earns enough elsewhere to cover the bill is a separate business question.

2. Players pay through credits or purchases

A game can expose AI usage as a player-billing feature. PlayKit documents a model in which costs are charged to an individual player’s balance, with a small daily credit refresh and optional in-app purchases. This design is intended for games where AI usage rises with engagement and the developer wants to offset infrastructure costs.

Player billing does not necessarily make the whole game paid. A player might receive a daily allowance at no charge, then buy additional credits after using it. The operator can also make the AI feature optional, so players who never use it do not create the same variable expense as heavy users.

This documentation proves that direct player charging is an available product pattern. It does not show that player billing is the dominant model across free-to-play games. No representative market statistic establishes what percentage of shipped games use it.

3. The wider game business funds the feature

Inference can be paid from the game’s general revenue rather than linked to a particular conversation. In-app purchases, battle passes, subscriptions, licensing, or other products can provide the cash that keeps the service running. Under this approach, the player does not see a separate AI line item, and the operator decides whether the feature improves retention, conversion, or engagement enough to justify its cost.

Advertising is another possible source of indirect funding. A February 2024 Google Cloud article discusses personalized in-game advertising and offers as monetization approaches and describes using player and purchase data in a demonstration environment. That material does not quantify advertising revenue, connect one advertisement to one model call, or prove that an ad directly reimburses a particular inference request. Advertising should therefore be described as a possible funding source for the game, not as a demonstrated per-call payment mechanism.

4. A platform or middleware company charges the operator

Middleware can sit between the game and an underlying model. Its commercial terms may be a software license, usage fee, revenue share, or a combination. The operator may still pay a separate cloud or hardware bill, depending on where the model runs.

Eposyne’s July 2026 comparison describes a revenue-linked license as one possible cost structure for on-device middleware. Its October 8, 2026 update says the company’s native on-device SDK was not yet available and that its current beta was hosted. That distinction matters: an architectural option should not be presented as a currently shipped feature from that vendor.

Billing units determine how the bill grows

“AI inference cost” is not one universal unit. The charge may be tied to the amount of data processed, the number of requests, elapsed time, hardware capacity, or a software agreement.

Billing unit What increases the charge Where it appears
Tokens More text or speech input and output processed by the model Text generation and some speech-recognition features
Calls More discrete API requests, regardless of how a feature packages them Image or 3D generation and other call-priced capabilities
Hybrid pricing A combination of request count, tokens, duration, or another meter Capabilities whose provider documentation specifies more than one unit
GPU time Longer runtime, larger models, higher concurrency, or reserved capacity Self-managed or hosted model serving
License or revenue share Contract terms, game revenue, seats, or an agreed platform fee Middleware and managed software platforms

PlayKit states that text and speech recognition can be token-priced, while image and 3D generation can be call-priced; some capabilities use hybrid pricing. A developer must therefore map each feature to its actual meter before estimating a budget. “One AI interaction” may contain several billable operations, such as speech recognition followed by text generation and audio synthesis.

GPU-hour figures are infrastructure inputs, not player costs

Inworld AI reported public NVIDIA B200 list rates across clouds of $3.49 to $14.24 per GPU-hour in April 2026. This is a comparison of listed GPU-hour prices, not a cost per player, conversation, or game session. It does not include the workload assumptions needed to convert hardware time into a per-request figure, such as utilization, model size, batching, idle capacity, and peak demand.

Using that range as though every player interaction costs a fixed fraction of a GPU-hour would produce a misleading estimate. It is useful as an infrastructure-price input only after the operator has measured how much capacity the chosen model and traffic pattern require.

Deployment changes who pays and what kind of cost appears

Managed cloud inference

With managed cloud inference, a provider operates the serving infrastructure and bills the account associated with the game. The cost generally recurs as players generate requests. Capacity planning must account for ordinary traffic, sudden launches, events, and other peaks; paying only for average activity can leave a game short of capacity during bursts, while reserving too much can leave paid resources idle.

Google Cloud’s February 2024 game article presents managed Vertex AI serving and deployment of models alongside game servers on Google Kubernetes Engine as technically viable patterns for live games. Those are descriptions of that provider’s own offerings, not an independent total-cost comparison. They show where the service can run, not which architecture will be cheapest for a particular game.

Self-hosted or local server inference

A studio can operate the model stack itself, either in its own facilities or on rented infrastructure that it manages. This changes the expense from a simple provider meter to a combination of engineering time, hardware or capacity, monitoring, updates, security, and ongoing maintenance. The operator still pays for infrastructure, but the invoice may come from several suppliers rather than one AI API.

Self-hosting can make costs more predictable at high utilization, but only if the team can keep the hardware busy and maintain the system. Low utilization, idle machines, model upgrades, and on-call work can erase the apparent savings. The relevant comparison is total operating cost, not the API price alone.

On-device inference

When a model runs on a player’s PC, console, or phone, the player supplies the compute hardware and electricity. The publisher may avoid a per-request cloud charge, but it must design for a range of memory, processor, graphics, thermal, and battery constraints. Support costs also shift: a feature that works on a high-end device may fail or degrade on a low-end one.

An on-device architecture can still involve a middleware license or a small server component. It should not automatically be described as free. Eposyne’s current beta, according to its October 8, 2026 update, is hosted because its native on-device SDK was not yet available.

Hybrid deployment

A hybrid design keeps some work in the cloud and moves other work to a local device or game server. For example, a lightweight local model might handle routine reactions while a hosted model handles complex requests. This can reduce cloud volume, but it introduces routing logic, version management, fallback behavior, and more than one failure mode. The payer is determined by which part of the interaction runs where.

How to compare payment options for a real game

Question Account billing Player billing Local or self-managed deployment
Who receives the first invoice? Provider bills the publisher or developer account Provider or platform charges the player’s balance, with the operator typically managing the feature Hardware, hosting, software, or maintenance suppliers bill the operator; on-device compute is supplied by the player
What is the usual meter? Tokens, calls, minutes, or other usage units Credits mapped to the capability’s token, call, or hybrid meter Capacity, GPU time, license, revenue share, engineering, and maintenance
What makes cost rise? More players, requests, output, model size, or peak capacity More paid usage and any allowance the operator funds More hardware, support work, updates, or device requirements
How is revenue recovered? General game income, ads, purchases, or operating budget Direct credit sales plus any wider game revenue Reduced cloud spend, a license arrangement, or no direct recovery for on-device compute

Questions a budget review should answer

  • Which feature calls which model, and how many separate operations occur in one player interaction?
  • Is the provider charging tokens, calls, time, a hybrid unit, or a contract fee?
  • Who is the invoice holder, and is the game intentionally absorbing the cost or passing it to players?
  • What happens during a traffic spike, and are capacity charges incurred while resources sit idle?
  • What minimum device specification is acceptable if any inference runs locally?
  • Who handles model updates, abuse controls, privacy reviews, monitoring, and player support?

What is not established about the free-to-play market

The available evidence documents billing modes, vendor examples, and infrastructure price inputs. It does not establish an industry-wide percentage showing how much inference is paid by publishers, players, advertisers, or infrastructure providers. Any precise payer split would be invented unless it came from a representative market study.

The same caution applies to claims that one deployment model is always cheaper. Cloud, self-managed, on-device, and hybrid systems have different utilization, staffing, latency, hardware, and support requirements. A vendor’s comparison describes its own assumptions and should not be treated as an independent benchmark.

A practical way to assign the cost before launch

  1. List every AI operation. Separate text, speech recognition, speech synthesis, image, 3D, moderation, and background tasks instead of calling them all “a conversation.”
  2. Attach the provider’s billing unit. Record whether each operation is token-priced, call-priced, time-priced, hybrid, or covered by a license.
  3. Model player behavior in ranges. Use low, typical, and peak activity assumptions, and include retries, failed requests, and moderation calls where they apply.
  4. Choose the invoice policy. Decide whether the publisher pays from the operating budget, whether players receive a funded allowance, or whether extra usage requires a purchase.
  5. Test the deployment boundary. Measure latency, concurrency, device requirements, and fallback behavior for cloud, server, and local components.
  6. Review the non-inference work. Include engineering, monitoring, security, content review, support, model updates, and capacity planning in the decision.
  7. Set a stop or degrade rule. Define what happens when a player exhausts credits, a provider limit is reached, a device cannot run the model, or a traffic surge makes the preferred path unavailable.

Common misconceptions

  • “Free-to-play means the AI is free.” It means the player does not pay an upfront access price; the operator can still receive a recurring inference bill.
  • “The player always pays because the player generates the request.” The publisher may pay every charge through its account and recover it only indirectly, or not recover it at all.
  • “Advertising pays for each AI response.” Ads can support the game’s overall revenue, but the evidence does not show one-to-one reimbursement of individual inference calls.
  • “Local inference has no cost.” It shifts cost toward hardware, electricity, engineering, maintenance, and device support.
  • “A GPU-hour price is a conversation price.” GPU-hour rates must be combined with workload and utilization measurements before they say anything about player-level cost.

Bottom line

For most hosted implementations, the studio or publisher account is the first payer. The business can absorb that bill, fund it from the game’s broader income, or design a credit system that charges players for some usage. Local, self-managed, and hybrid deployments change the shape of the expense rather than eliminating it. There is no reliable industry-wide statistic showing which stakeholder pays the largest share of AI inference in free-to-play games.
