As of October 7, 2026, Skydance Corporation owns Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), following completion of its acquisition on October 6. WBD’s combined portfolio includes Warner Bros. and DC, as well as Nickelodeon and the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise. But that corporate ownership does not, by itself, establish who publishes or develops every game—or the exact terms of each game license.

Who owns Batman and SpongeBob now?

Skydance Corporation completed its acquisition of WBD on October 6, 2026, and describes the combined company as Skydance. Its completion announcement lists Warner Bros., DC, and Nickelodeon among the portfolio brands, and SpongeBob SquarePants among the franchises.

For Batman, the relevant portfolio connection is DC: Warner Bros. Games identifies DC as part of WBD and Batman and related characters and elements as DC properties. For SpongeBob, the completion announcement places the franchise in the combined portfolio alongside Nickelodeon. These are corporate-level facts; they do not spell out every game-specific license or contract.

Does owning a franchise mean owning every game right?

Not necessarily. A franchise’s corporate home, a game’s publisher, its developer, and the holder of a particular license are distinct roles. A parent company may own a portfolio or brand while a named studio develops a game and a publishing label releases it. Licenses can also be limited by title, platform, territory, term, or permitted use.

The public announcements cited here confirm the current parent-company relationship and selected game credits. They do not disclose every existing game license, transfer clause, exclusivity term, territory, or sublicense. So the sound answer is to state what is publicly confirmed for a franchise or title, and not infer the rest.

What do the Batman game examples show?

Game example Developer Publisher What the credits establish
LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight TT Games Warner Bros. Games Warner Bros. Games’ May 19, 2026 announcement names these title-specific roles and identifies DC as part of WBD.
Batman: Arkham Trilogy for Nintendo Switch Turn Me Up Games developed the Switch version; Rocksteady Studios originally developed the games. Warner Bros. Games Warner Bros. Games’ June 20, 2023 FAQ distinguishes the original development from the Switch port and names the publisher.

The Arkham Trilogy FAQ also says the physical Switch edition includes Batman: Arkham Asylum on the cartridge, while Arkham City and Arkham Knight require downloads. That is a detail about this particular edition, not a general rule about Batman games.

Who publishes SpongeBob games?

The October 6, 2026 completion announcement confirms SpongeBob SquarePants as part of Skydance’s combined portfolio and Nickelodeon as a portfolio brand. It does not identify the publisher, developer, or licensee of any specific SpongeBob game. Those roles should be checked against the individual game’s official announcement or credits rather than inferred from franchise ownership.

How can you check who controls a specific game?

  1. Identify the corporate parent. Check a current company announcement for the ownership relationship, and note its date.
  2. Check the franchise or brand attribution. Look for an official description connecting the characters or property to a division or portfolio.
  3. Read the title’s announcement or credits. Record the publisher and developer separately; a port may have a different developer from the original game.
  4. Keep license claims narrow. Unless an official source states the scope, do not assume a license covers every game, platform, region, or time period.

For the examples above, the relevant official materials are Skydance Corporation’s October 6, 2026 acquisition-completion announcement, Warner Bros. Games’ May 19, 2026 LEGO Batman announcement, and its June 20, 2023 Arkham Trilogy FAQ. They establish the facts described here, but do not publish the underlying full license agreements.
