Ledger says this was a localized distribution attack: its core firmware, chips and servers were not compromised, and the public disclosure does not identify individual perpetrators.
The incident answers a difficult question for buyers: a wallet can be authentic and still have been physically modified after leaving controlled factory distribution. A genuine-authenticity result, holographic seal or familiar packaging cannot prove that every person in the distribution chain left the device untouched.

What happened before some buyers received their wallets?
According to Ledger’s account, the group acquired genuine devices over a period of months. The devices were opened, fitted with concealed components designed to capture a recovery phrase while the owner set up the wallet, then placed back into distribution through resellers in Southeast Asia.

The reported method did not require a counterfeit product or a flaw in Ledger’s core software. It exploited custody: someone gained physical access between ordinary distribution points and the eventual customer.

The disclosure does not establish who the perpetrators were, how many devices were affected, or an industry-wide loss rate. It does establish a practical security rule: authenticity and physical integrity are different properties.
Can a genuine Ledger or Trezor arrive compromised?
Yes. A genuine device may contain authentic manufacturer hardware and still have been opened and modified later. That possibility is uncommon but serious because a hardware wallet’s most valuable secret is created during setup. If an attacker can observe or capture the recovery phrase, they can recreate the wallet elsewhere and move funds without possessing the device.
Trezor’s security model explicitly treats physical and supply-chain attacks as threats, and its Safe 3 setup guidance tells buyers to inspect the expected seal and package contents. That does not mean every opened-looking box is malicious; it means an unexplained discrepancy should be treated as a stop condition rather than a cosmetic issue.

Why authenticity checks and seals are not enough
Ledger says its Genuine Check can confirm that a device is authentic, but it cannot reconstruct the device’s physical history. A valid cryptographic check can therefore coexist with unauthorized opening after the device left factory control.
Ledger Donjon has also warned that classic holographic or anti-tampering seals can be cloned, bypassed, or replaced after opening. Seals are useful evidence, not proof of an untouched supply chain. The strongest protection is a combination of source, inspection and setup behavior.
| Check | What it can establish | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Genuine-authenticity check | That the device presents expected manufacturer credentials or authenticity data | That no intermediary opened or modified it |
| Holographic or package seal | Visible evidence that may reveal rough handling or opening | That a seal was never replaced, cloned or bypassed |
| Official or verified-authorized seller | A stronger chain of custody and a support path | Absolute proof that every shipment was untouched |
| Self-generated setup | That you created the recovery material during your own setup process | Protection if you ignore warning signs or disclose the phrase elsewhere |
The clearest warning signs
- A recovery phrase is printed, typed, photographed or supplied in the box.
- A PIN is already provided, or the device appears to have been onboarded before you opened it.
- Packaging, labels, seals or accessories do not match the manufacturer’s expected contents.
- The device asks you to use a pre-existing wallet instead of generating new recovery material during setup.
- A marketplace listing, return shipment or reseller explanation conflicts with the manufacturer’s instructions.
A supplied recovery phrase is the most damaging signal. Whoever created or saw it may control every account derived from it. Do not test it with a small deposit, because the same phrase can be monitored and drained later.

What to do if your package looks opened or already has a seed
- Stop setup. Do not connect the device to a wallet application, website or exchange, and do not transfer funds to accounts created from supplied recovery material.
- Do not enter the phrase anywhere. Never type a supplied seed into Ledger Wallet, Trezor software, a browser page or any other application. Recovery phrases should be generated by the device and written down by you.
- Document the condition. Photograph the box, seals, labels, device, accessories and shipping materials. Keep everything, including the outer package and return paperwork.
- Contact official support. Use the manufacturer’s official support channel, describe the discrepancy and follow its instructions for verification, replacement or return. Avoid support accounts reached through unsolicited messages.
- If you already used it, move funds. From a known-clean device, create a new wallet with a freshly generated phrase and transfer assets there. Treat the old phrase as exposed; changing a PIN alone does not make an exposed seed safe.
Is buying a hardware wallet on Amazon safe?
A marketplace listing is not, by itself, proof of an intact supply chain. Risk depends on the actual seller, fulfillment and return handling, not just the marketplace’s name or the product photograph. The safer choices are the manufacturer’s own store or a reseller that the manufacturer currently identifies as authorized.
Before ordering, check the seller identity, avoid unexplained “open-box” or preconfigured offers, and retain the invoice and packaging. On arrival, compare contents with the manufacturer’s setup guide and reject anything that is already initialized or includes recovery material. A discount is not worth accepting a device whose custody you cannot explain.

Recovery generation
The device should generate the recovery phrase during your setup. Write it by hand, keep it offline and never photograph, email or paste it into software. No legitimate support representative needs the phrase.
Attestation and incident response
Use the manufacturer’s authenticity and device-attestation tools, but interpret them as one layer. Also evaluate whether the company documents physical-threat models, publishes clear setup guidance and provides an official response process for suspicious units.
Tamper evidence and returns
Inspect seals and contents before powering on. A return that appears resealed, incomplete or previously configured should be reported rather than reset and reused.
What losses show about the threat
Ledger reported approximately $78,000 drained in an unsolicited replacement-device scam in May 2021. That episode was not presented as proof of a general compromise rate, and no independently verified industry-wide loss total or prevalence figure is established here. It does show why an unexpected replacement device, message or support interaction deserves the same suspicion as a visibly opened package.
The practical rule
Assume the wallet is unsafe when someone else appears to have generated its recovery phrase, chosen its PIN or opened and resealed its packaging. Buy through controlled channels, inspect before setup, generate the phrase yourself and stop immediately when any step violates that process. A genuine check can support authenticity; only disciplined custody and setup protect the secret that controls the funds.
