HOTO is an independent tool brand founded in 2016 by Shanghai HOTO Technology. Its connection to Xiaomi comes from designing a precision screwdriver for Xiaomi’s Mijia line; the available sources do not establish that Xiaomi owns HOTO. As for quality, the evidence points to a model-by-model answer: a compact HOTO screwdriver can suit small electronics screws, but it may lack the torque for stubborn fasteners.
Who makes HOTO power tools?
HOTO’s company page identifies Shanghai HOTO Technology as the company behind the brand and names Lidan Liu as its founder and CEO. HOTO describes itself as an independent brand founded in 2016. HOTO’s company history and its 2022 brand story say the company’s first product was a precision screwdriver set designed for Xiaomi’s Mijia line.

That association helps explain why Xiaomi-branded tools may identify Shanghai HOTO Technology as their maker. It supports a design and manufacturing relationship, not a claim that Xiaomi owns HOTO; The Verge’s account also describes HOTO’s first product as a screwdriver set for Xiaomi.
HOTO reported that its Mijia screwdriver set sold more than two million units between 2017 and 2020. That is the company’s own sales figure, not an independently audited market statistic.

Are HOTO tools any good?
Judge the exact model against the job rather than treating one review as a verdict on the whole brand. In a hands-on review of HOTO’s Snapbloq set, WIRED found the compact electric screwdriver useful for small screws on and inside electronics. The reviewer also found that the tested 0.5 N·m screwdriver struggled with somewhat-tight screws, requiring a manual screwdriver when more force was needed.
That review is evidence about the Snapbloq model tested; it does not establish how every HOTO screwdriver or drill performs. HOTO’s product pages provide specifications for other models, but those are manufacturer claims, not independent performance tests.

HOTO 3.6V Electric Screwdriver Kit Pro
HOTO lists up to 4 N·m of torque, three torque settings, a 1500mAh battery, USB-C charging, and a one-year warranty for its 3.6V Electric Screwdriver Kit Pro. Those specifications describe a different model from the Snapbloq screwdriver reviewed by WIRED; the 0.5 N·m finding should not be applied to this kit.
HOTO 16V Brushless Drill
For drilling rather than driving small screws, HOTO’s 16V Brushless Drill page lists a 14.4V rated voltage, speeds up to 1700 rpm, a 1900mAh battery, included bits, and a one-year warranty. These are manufacturer-listed specifications for that drill, not a basis for comparing its headline figures directly with a screwdriver’s torque.

Popular Woodworking has also reviewed HOTO’s earlier 12V drill. That is a separate model, so its findings should not be treated as a verdict on the 16V Brushless Drill or HOTO drills generally.
Which HOTO tool fits the job?
- Small electronics screws or light assembly: A compact electric screwdriver may save effort on suitable screws. Keep a manual screwdriver handy for tight fasteners or work that needs more force.
- Drilling: Choose a drill model and check its specifications and included accessories. An electric screwdriver is not a substitute for a drill.
- Choosing between models: Check the exact model’s intended use, torque and speed, ergonomics, included bits, warranty, and current availability. HOTO lists one-year warranties for the two cited current products; confirm the warranty terms for your product and market before buying.
What is known about HOTO reliability?
The available reviews do not establish a brand-wide long-term reliability record. A hands-on review of one screwdriver and a separate review of an earlier drill can inform a model-specific decision, but neither provides a systematic durability study covering HOTO’s product range. The evidence therefore supports a task-specific assessment, not a claim that HOTO tools are uniformly reliable or unreliable.
