Who is V in Cyberpunk 2077?
CD PROJEKT RED describes V as “a mercenary working their way up the ranks to Night City legend.” V is a defined protagonist, but not a fully fixed character: players create V and choose aspects of their background, leaving room to shape how the mercenary approaches life in Night City. CD PROJEKT RED’s official game page presents V’s ambition and the central conflict that turns the story into a fight for survival.

V’s big opportunity is the Konpeki Plaza heist. It goes wrong, and V ends up with an experimental prototype implanted in their head. The device gradually overwrites V’s personality with that of Johnny Silverhand, making the struggle to survive inseparable from the question of what remains of V’s own identity.
What does V’s lifepath mean?
Before character creation, players choose one of three lifepaths: Corpo, Streetkid, or Nomad. The official Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition Booklet places lifepath selection before character creation, while CD PROJEKT RED’s announcement describes historical background as one of the character aspects players can choose. A lifepath establishes V’s background; it should not be treated as a fixed personality or a measure of which V is best.

The official sources establish these options and that background can influence the game, but they do not provide a basis for ranking the paths or comparing every scene and dialogue difference. The choice is best understood as part of defining V’s starting identity, not as a promise of one canonical version of the character. How do player choices shape V?
The game’s official description says the choices players make shape the story and the people around V. That broad promise makes V both the protagonist of a central plot and a character whose relationships and direction are influenced by the player. It does not mean every decision has the same weight, and it is not a guide to any particular quest, romance, or ending.

One specific example of a later feature is repeatable apartment hangouts, which become available after completing a romance path with a character. CD PROJEKT RED added the feature in Update 2.1 patch notes, published December 4, 2023. This detail describes that update’s feature, rather than the full scope of romance choices or their outcomes.
How does Phantom Liberty fit into V’s story?
Phantom Liberty extends V’s story with an expansion plot set in Dogtown. CD PROJEKT RED describes it as a spy-thriller adventure involving espionage, alliances, and consequential decisions. The base game establishes V’s mercenary life, the failed heist, and the prototype; the expansion adds a separate story context rather than replacing that premise.
