The bus driver in Stardew Valley is Pam. She lost her job when the bus broke down, and repairing it lets her return to work and drive you to the Calico Desert. The “mystery” comes from a gameplay quirk: on some days you can still use the bus when Pam is absent, but the game does not establish a second driver.
Who drives the bus in Stardew Valley?
Pam is Pelican Town’s named bus driver. She lives in the trailer near the river with her daughter Penny. Before the bus is repaired, Pam explains that she was laid off and says that getting the job back would let her drive the player to the desert. After service resumes, she confirms, “I’m back on the saddle.” The dialogue is recorded on the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Pam page.

The story links the broken bus to Pam’s lost work. Her return to the job is more than a transport mechanic: her remark about being back on the saddle suggests that driving gives her a sense of purpose. That is a character reading of her dialogue, not a separate hidden plot reveal.

When does Pam drive, and how much is the fare?
After restoration, Pam normally reaches the Bus Stop at 10:00am and leaves at 5:00pm. A ticket costs 500g and covers the return trip as well. These figures are listed on the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Bus Stop page; the cited page revision is from 2025.

If Pam is unavailable, a sign at the stop may let you drive the bus yourself while still charging the 500g fare. Version 1.6 removed the requirement that Pam be physically present for this fallback. Lewis later calls the bus’s overnight restart “a great mystery,” but that line does not change the game’s identification of Pam as the driver.
Is there a secret second bus driver?
No second or hidden driver is established by the documented story or mechanics. The player-controlled trip on some days is an edge case in how bus access works, not evidence of another canon character. Claims about a ghost driver, secret replacement, or undisclosed crash backstory are speculation unless an official update establishes them.
