The answer changes with the point in the story and with what “stronger” means. Beru has the better case for overwhelming physical power, speed, recovery and unusual abilities. Igris has the clearer case for elite swordsmanship, discipline and battle experience, and his original power returns after Jinwoo unlocks his full Shadow Monarch abilities. If both are treated as late-series, fully restored shadows, calling Beru a raw-power favorite is a defensible interpretation—but it is not a canon verdict.
This comparison includes developments beyond the characters’ first anime introductions. Readers watching only the anime should treat the later sections as spoilers for the broader Solo Leveling story.

Why the answer depends on the story stage
Beru and Igris are not static characters with one permanently documented power level. Each changes after becoming one of Jinwoo’s shadows, and Igris has an especially important restoration that can be missed if the comparison is limited to his earliest appearance.
Early versions are not equivalent to peak versions
Beru first appears as the Ant Queen’s strongest magic beast. Jinwoo defeats him and extracts his shadow, turning a raid boss into a commander in the shadow army. Igris is the first shadow Jinwoo names. Netmarble’s official Solo Leveling: KARMA character material states that Igris regains his original strength after Jinwoo unlocks his full Shadow Monarch abilities. Comparing Beru’s post-extraction form with Igris before that restoration mixes different stages and produces a misleading ranking.

What the official material does—and does not—say
Official character and game descriptions establish each fighter’s role and development, but they do not publish a direct Beru-versus-Igris duel result. The official descriptions therefore support a framework for comparison, not a sentence such as “canon says Beru wins.” Fan-maintained summaries can add useful detail about abilities, but they are secondary references and should not be treated as a substitute for the licensed novel or webtoon scene.
Who Beru is in the canon timeline
Origin as the Ant Queen’s strongest magic beast
Beru begins as the strongest creature produced by the Ant Queen. That origin matters because his baseline is already a high-level monster before Jinwoo’s extraction. His threat is not based on a single weapon or technique: he combines physical force with speed, resilience and predatory instincts.
Life as a shadow
After Jinwoo defeats him, Beru becomes a shadow and keeps the identity and combat traits that make him dangerous. Secondary reference pages commonly describe immense strength, rapid movement, durability, regeneration and additional special abilities. Those descriptions are useful for identifying the attributes fans debate, but the exact presentation can vary by translation, adaptation and scene. Use the licensed chapter or episode when a precise feat is required.

Netmarble’s official Solo Leveling: ARISE announcement describes Beru as the original work’s first General-rank shadow. The same announcement explains that promotion to General rank enhances a shadow’s abilities and adds a skill. This is evidence that Beru occupies an important command tier; it is not a published statement that every General-rank shadow automatically defeats Igris in every circumstance.
Rank #2
Who Igris is in the canon timeline
The first named shadow
Igris is the first shadow Jinwoo names. His first major impression is that of a heavily armored knight and exceptional swordsman. He fights with technique, timing and composure rather than relying only on an exchange of blows. That distinction remains central to any fair matchup.
Restored original strength
Official character material says Igris regains his original strength once Jinwoo unlocks his full Shadow Monarch abilities. A comparison that uses only early Igris therefore understates him. The restored version is the relevant candidate when readers ask about both characters at their strongest known story state.
Rank labels need careful handling
Fan-maintained references often assign Igris a Marshal-grade label, while official pages emphasize the return of his original power rather than giving a direct numerical ranking against Beru. Rank terminology can describe command status or a game’s presentation as well as combat capability. Treat it as context, not as a mathematical proof of victory.
What “stronger” can mean in this matchup
A single word hides several different questions. Separating them prevents a physical advantage from being mistaken for an automatic duel win.
Rank #3
| Comparison axis | Beru’s case | Igris’s case | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raw physical power | His origin as the Ant Queen’s strongest magic beast and his monster physiology favor him. | He is powerful, but his defining evidence is less about brute force. | Beru has the stronger argument on this axis. |
| Speed and mobility | Secondary references emphasize exceptional speed and aggressive movement. | His footwork and timing are integrated with sword technique. | Beru may be faster in bursts; Igris may use movement more efficiently. |
| Durability and recovery | Regeneration and monster resilience are repeatedly associated with his profile. | As a shadow, he is difficult to remove permanently, but the available official material does not quantify a recovery advantage. | Beru has the clearer documented profile, with limits depending on the scene. |
| Weapon skill | He can fight at close range, but sword mastery is not his signature. | His identity is built around expert swordsmanship and long combat experience. | Igris has the decisive stylistic advantage in a technical duel. |
| Special abilities | His beast-derived abilities give him more ways to pressure an opponent. | His restored power and disciplined use of a blade make him dangerous without relying on a broad ability list. | The battlefield and permitted abilities determine the result. |
| Adaptability | Predatory instincts and physical variety can punish mistakes. | Experience, defensive structure and reading an opponent support a controlled response. | Neither side has an officially published universal edge. |
How the fight changes by version
Beru versus early Igris
If the matchup uses Beru after his conversion but Igris before his original strength returns, Beru is the safer pick. He brings the more intimidating physical profile, while early Igris is being judged before the story restores the power the official material says he once possessed. That result is a stage-specific interpretation, not a statement about the characters at their peaks.
Beru versus restored Igris
This is the most useful version for a late-story comparison. Beru still has the likely edge in explosive force, recovery and varied offense. Restored Igris closes the gap through superior sword technique, defensive precision and experience. A clean hit from Beru could decide the encounter quickly; an extended exchange gives Igris more opportunities to control distance and exploit openings.
Both characters under identical shadow conditions
If the rules remove outside assistance and give both shadows the same opportunity to recover, the question becomes one of conversion of advantages. Beru wants a fast, chaotic engagement in which his physical gifts overwhelm the guard. Igris wants a readable pattern, where feints, angles and timing turn Beru’s aggression against him. There is no official scene establishing which plan defeats the other every time.
Scenario-by-scenario outcome
Open battlefield with all abilities allowed
Beru is the more convincing favorite in an open field. Space lets him use speed and approach angles, while his resilience reduces the cost of trading attacks. “Favorite” still does not mean guaranteed: Igris can win if he survives the initial pressure and forces a narrow engagement.
Rank #4
Formal sword duel
Igris has the better matchup when the contest is restricted to swordsmanship, controlled distance and recognizable rules. Beru’s strength remains a problem, but the format removes some of the advantages that come from unpredictable movement and multiple special abilities.
Long battle with repeated exchanges
The answer depends on how the adaptation portrays each shadow’s recovery at that stage. Beru’s commonly cited regeneration makes him difficult to wear down, while Igris’s discipline can prevent wasteful exchanges. Without a canonical endurance measurement, assigning a fixed number of minutes or a percentage chance would be invented precision.
Ambush or surprise attack
The opening matters more than rank labels. Beru’s burst offense can end a fight before Igris establishes his stance. Conversely, Igris’s awareness and experience may let him turn a failed surprise into a counterattack. The winner in this setup is determined by who gets the first meaningful advantage, not by a universal tier list.

What rank and promotion actually tell you
Rank is useful shorthand, but it is not a complete power-scaling system. The official announcement identifies Beru as the first General-rank shadow and notes that General promotion improves abilities and adds a skill. Official Igris material instead highlights restoration of original strength. Those statements describe different kinds of development, so placing the two labels on a single ladder can create false certainty.
Best Value
Game adaptations may also display ranks, skills or balance decisions for playability. A game label can reflect the adaptation’s design rather than a direct adjudication of every novel or webtoon matchup. When discussing canon, identify whether a claim comes from the original story, an official adaptation description or a fan-maintained reference.
Anime-only readers: where the spoiler boundary sits
The anime introduces the characters at earlier points than the complete story covers. An anime-only viewer may know Igris primarily as the knight Jinwoo defeats and Beru primarily through the Jeju Island conflict, without having seen every later change in the shadow army. The restored-power statement about Igris belongs to the broader story context presented in official character material, so it should not be used as if it were already animated in every release.
For an adaptation-specific article, state the season or episode cutoff before ranking either character. “Beru versus Igris in the anime” and “peak Beru versus peak Igris in the complete story” are different questions.

- Check the stage: Ask whether the post-extraction, promoted or restored form is being used.
- Separate feats from labels: A rank or title is context; a shown action is evidence of what happened in a particular scene.
- Identify the source: Distinguish the licensed novel or webtoon from an adaptation summary, game page or fan-maintained wiki.
- Define the rules: “Who is stronger?” may mean a bare-handed test, a sword duel, an unrestricted battle or a fight with outside commands.
- Avoid invented statistics: No official quantitative power level, win percentage or named statistic settles this matchup.
Verdict: who should you pick?
For raw power and an unrestricted fight, Beru is the more defensible favorite because his profile combines extraordinary physical ability with recovery and varied attacks. For technical swordsmanship or a controlled duel, Igris is the stronger pick because that is where his defining expertise and restored strength matter most. For peak versions in a neutral, all-abilities battle, Beru has a narrow interpretive edge, but the result remains debatable and is not officially declared.
The most accurate short answer is therefore: Beru is probably stronger physically; Igris may be the better pure combat technician; neither has a verified canon victory over the other in a direct peak-strength duel. Any article or video that presents one name as an unquestionable official winner is going beyond the evidence currently established by the cited official material.
