Raditz is Goku’s older brother, a Saiyan warrior whose arrival on Earth begins the Saiyan Saga. Calling Goku by his birth name, Kakarot, Raditz exposes his brother’s alien heritage, kidnaps Gohan, and demands that Goku return to the Saiyans’ campaign of conquest. His attack forces Goku and Piccolo—once enemies—to work together, and his dying warning brings Vegeta and Nappa toward Earth.
The Dragon Ball Official Site’s September 28, 2021 character feature identifies Raditz as one of the last surviving Saiyans and places him among the weaker fighters of that warrior race. That distinction explains his importance: he is powerful enough to overwhelm the heroes at the start of the story, but his defeat also reveals that much stronger enemies are coming.

Who is Raditz in Dragon Ball?
Raditz is a Saiyan soldier and Goku’s older brother. He belongs to the same warrior race that sent infants such as Goku to other worlds before the destruction of Planet Vegeta. On Earth, Goku has grown up believing he is an ordinary human martial artist. Raditz’s appearance overturns that assumption in a single encounter.

Raditz locates Goku with a Scouter, the Saiyan device that detects and compares energy levels. He addresses him as Kakarot, Goku’s Saiyan name, and explains that the child sent to Earth survived and has failed to carry out his assigned mission. The revelation changes the story from a mostly Earth-based adventure into a conflict involving Saiyan history, off-world enemies, and the Dragon Balls.

The official character feature opens with the description “Goku’s evil older brother, Raditz!” That wording captures his narrative function, but “evil” is best understood as a description of his actions and allegiance: Raditz is loyal to the Saiyan conquest and treats Earth’s people as obstacles rather than as lives worth protecting.
Is Raditz Goku’s brother?
Yes. Raditz is Goku’s biological older brother. Both are Saiyans, although they have radically different lives. Raditz grows up as a combatant serving the Saiyan forces, while Goku is sent to Earth as an infant and becomes a defender of the planet after losing his original memories.
Why does Raditz call him Kakarot?
Kakarot is Goku’s Saiyan birth name. Raditz uses it because he does not recognize the Earth name “Goku” as his brother’s true identity. The name is more than a vocabulary detail: it shows that Raditz sees Goku as a Saiyan soldier who abandoned his assignment, not as the compassionate martial artist Earth knows.

His explanation establishes that Goku’s strength and unusual physical abilities have an extraterrestrial origin. It also introduces the Saiyans as a conquering warrior race. Raditz is one of the few survivors after Planet Vegeta’s destruction, so his visit connects Goku to a much larger history that had been absent from the earlier adventures.
Why does Raditz come to Earth?
Raditz comes to find Goku and recruit him. He expects his younger brother to help the Saiyans conquer inhabited worlds, including Earth. When Goku refuses, Raditz uses Gohan as leverage rather than simply leaving.

How does Raditz abduct Gohan?
Raditz takes Gohan to his spacecraft and keeps him as a hostage. The threat gives Goku an immediate personal reason to pursue him. Goku is not fighting merely to protect a distant planet or settle a martial-arts rivalry; he is trying to rescue his son from a relative who regards the child as a useful bargaining piece.
This kidnapping also exposes a contrast between the brothers. Raditz treats family connection as a tool for coercion. Goku’s response is the opposite: he risks his life to recover Gohan, even after learning that Raditz is his brother.
Why does Piccolo join Goku?
Piccolo has been Goku’s enemy, but Raditz is beyond what either fighter can handle alone. Piccolo understands that Raditz threatens the entire planet, and Goku needs every available advantage to save Gohan. Their temporary alliance is therefore practical rather than sentimental. It is one of the first major signs that the series’ old rivalries are being rearranged by a larger danger.
How strong is Raditz?
Raditz is an overwhelming opponent for the heroes at this point in the story. The official feature depicts him catching and returning a bullet, enduring Piccolo’s Explosive Waves, and overpowering Goku and Piccolo when they attack together. Those scenes establish his speed, durability, reflexes, and combat experience without requiring a numerical power level.
What can Raditz do in battle?
- Enhanced physical ability: He moves quickly enough to intercept projectiles and has the strength to dominate Goku in close combat.
- Exceptional durability: Piccolo’s Explosive Waves do not stop him, and he initially withstands the Special Beam Cannon.
- Scouter use: His device lets him locate Goku and assess the energy of people around him.
- Combat training: Raditz fights as a veteran Saiyan soldier, giving him experience that complements his natural strength.
What is Double Kikoha, or Double Ki Blast?
Raditz’s named technique is Double Kikoha, also rendered as Double Ki Blast. He releases ki from both hands to strike two opponents at once. In the encounter with Goku and Piccolo, the technique demonstrates that he can pressure both fighters simultaneously instead of focusing on a single target.

Is Raditz one of the strongest Saiyans?
No. His threat is relative to the defenders he faces, not to every Saiyan. The official feature says Raditz is considered one of the weaker fighters among the Saiyan warrior race, and it reports Nappa taunting him as a “weakling.” That status does not make his Earth fight easy; it shows how severe the later Saiyan invasion will be. A fighter who seems unbeatable to Goku and Piccolo can still rank near the bottom of his own species’ military hierarchy.

No reliable numeric power level is established for Raditz in the official character feature. Treating an unverified number as definitive would obscure the more useful comparison: Raditz is far above the protagonists at the beginning of the Saiyan conflict, yet below the two Saiyans he says are coming.
How do Goku and Piccolo defeat Raditz?
Raditz is not defeated by a straightforward exchange of attacks. Goku and Piccolo must exploit a weakness, coordinate their timing, and accept a fatal cost.
- Piccolo identifies the tail weakness. Raditz’s tail is a vulnerable point. When it is seized, his strength and control are compromised.
- Goku restrains his brother. Goku grabs Raditz’s tail and holds him in place, despite the danger of remaining at close range.
- Gohan attacks unexpectedly. Gohan’s anger erupts into a sudden burst of power that injures Raditz and creates the opening the adults need.
- Piccolo fires the Special Beam Cannon. Piccolo’s Makankosappo, commonly translated as Special Beam Cannon, pierces Raditz.
- Goku refuses to let go. The beam passes through both brothers. Goku’s decision to keep Raditz immobilized allows the technique to hit its target, but it also kills Goku.
The victory is therefore a combined result of Raditz’s tail vulnerability, Gohan’s uncontrolled intervention, Piccolo’s precision attack, and Goku’s willingness to sacrifice himself. It is not evidence that either hero has simply surpassed Raditz in power.
What happened to Raditz?
Raditz dies from Piccolo’s Special Beam Cannon after Goku holds him in position. His death ends the immediate kidnapping crisis, but it does not end the danger he brought to Earth.

What does Raditz tell Vegeta and Nappa?
Before dying, Raditz transmits information to Vegeta and Nappa. He tells them about Earth’s Dragon Balls, which can grant wishes, and warns that Goku and Piccolo are responsible for his defeat. The official story retrospective, “The Story of Dragon Ball in 42 Panels -Part Two-”, describes Raditz’s message as the trigger for the next stage of the story and notes that two Saiyans stronger than Raditz will arrive in one year.
Raditz does not personally participate in the later battle against Vegeta and Nappa. His role in that conflict is informational and causal: his transmission gives the surviving Saiyans a destination, a motive, and a timetable.

He reveals Goku’s origin
Before Raditz arrives, Goku’s unusual nature is unexplained. Raditz supplies the missing context: Goku is Kakarot, a Saiyan sent away from Planet Vegeta. That revelation reframes earlier details about Goku’s strength and introduces a family history that becomes central to the series.

Gohan is not just a child in danger. His burst of power against Raditz reveals hidden potential and establishes why both allies and enemies will pay attention to him. The rescue also gives Goku’s relationship with his son its first major crisis.

He creates the Goku–Piccolo alliance
Goku and Piccolo have spent the previous conflict as opponents. Raditz’s superiority makes cooperation unavoidable. Their alliance is short-lived in its original form, but it changes how both characters are positioned in the story and prepares Piccolo to become Gohan’s mentor.
He opens the door to the Saiyan invasion
Raditz’s warning converts a local confrontation into a countdown. Earth’s defenders learn that stronger Saiyans are coming, while the Dragon Balls become an objective for the invaders. The one-year interval creates the training and preparation period that drives the next portion of the saga.
He demonstrates the scale of the threat
Raditz is strong enough to defeat Goku and Piccolo together, yet he is regarded as weak by Nappa and is surpassed by the Saiyans who follow. This carefully establishes the saga’s escalation. The audience sees both the immediate danger and the much larger gap the heroes must close.
Where can you read Raditz’s introduction?
The opening conflict is collected in Dragon Ball Z, Vol. 1, a VIZ/Shonen Jump paperback. The VIZ product page identifies the volume and describes Raditz as Goku’s brother, with retailer information that includes Amazon.

Raditz’s place in Dragon Ball’s larger story
Raditz appears briefly, but his consequences continue long after his death. He supplies Goku’s family connection to the Saiyans, exposes Gohan’s potential, forces Piccolo and Goku into cooperation, and alerts Vegeta and Nappa to the Dragon Balls. The character is therefore less a recurring villain than a catalyst: his arrival starts the chain of events that defines the Saiyan Saga.
His relative weakness among Saiyans is essential to that design. If Raditz were the peak of Saiyan power, his defeat would close the threat. Instead, it proves that the heroes have survived only the first encounter. The one-year warning turns his final moments into the opening move of the next conflict.
