What is Penders’s playing style?
Penders is a goalkeeper who operates high up the pitch and contributes to his team’s build-up. BBC Sport reported that during his Strasbourg season he had the highest average position from goal among goalkeepers in Europe’s top five leagues. The report linked that positioning to Strasbourg’s approach and Penders’s frequent work outside the penalty area; it did not provide a numeric average position.

A high starting position can help a goalkeeper cover space behind a defence and offer a passing option, but it also demands sound timing and decisions. BBC Sport noted that Strasbourg’s high-risk style sometimes led to high-profile mistakes. Positioning alone, therefore, does not establish that Penders is an error-free sweeper or an elite distributor.

Former Genk goalkeeper coach Gilbert Roex described a developmental change in Penders’s play. Roex said his feet had once needed technical work, while later praising his ability to read the game and make decisions in build-up situations. As Roex put it: “He reads the game very well, which is essential because playing out from the back is not just about technique, but decision-making – understanding space, pressure and timing.”

What can his early Chelsea record tell us?
Penders’s Chelsea debut was a clean-sheet cup win, and Chelsea’s profile lists four saves and one clean sheet across his two 2026/27 Carabao Cup appearances. These figures describe only those matches. They are too small and competition-specific to establish his standing over a full season or whether he will become Chelsea’s regular starter.
