Keiichiro Toyama is a Japanese game director and designer, and the founder, CEO and Creator of Bokeh Game Studio. His selected works include Silent Hill (1999), the Siren series, Gravity Rush (2012), and Gravity Rush 2 (2017). His newer studio’s action-adventure Slitterhead shows how he continues to combine unsettling worlds with unusual player abilities.
Toyama is best understood less as “the horror director” and more as a creator who builds distinctive settings first, then designs mechanics and stories that belong to those settings. That approach explains the jump from psychological horror to gravity-defying movement and possession-based combat.

Toyama’s own description of his priorities is consistent across his career: originality, distinctive design and a memorable game world. In his Bokeh profile, he says, “That commitment to originality is something I have no intention of changing.” He also describes his goal as building a studio where that spirit can thrive. These are useful statements of intent, but they should not be treated as a claim that he personally performed every role on every game. Large games are team productions; Bokeh’s list is a record of selected works associated with him.

For players, his importance comes from the contrast between his projects. Silent Hill and Siren use fear, investigation and disorientation. Gravity Rush turns movement itself into the central fantasy. Slitterhead returns to horror while making possession and body-swapping the core of play. The common thread is a world with rules that feel unfamiliar, followed by mechanics that let the player experience those rules directly.
Keiichiro Toyama’s career in context
Education and entry into games
Toyama has said that he studied design and video art at university. He entered the games industry while the business was expanding and began as a designer. In an interview, he described his early work on Snatcher as rookie training. He then worked on Hyper Olympics in Atlanta, released internationally as International Track & Field, where he encountered 3D graphics and motion capture.
That early experience matters because it placed him between visual design and interactive systems. Toyama was not trained only as a conventional programmer or only as a storyteller; his later games repeatedly connect visual atmosphere, physical movement and the rules of a fictional world.

| Year | Game | What it shows in Toyama’s career |
|---|---|---|
| 1999 | Silent Hill | Psychological horror built around an oppressive town, investigation and shifting reality. |
| 2004 | Siren | Horror focused on an ensemble cast, a rural setting and the danger of seeing through hostile eyes. |
| 2006 | Siren 2 | Expansion of the series’ multi-character horror approach. |
| 2008 | Siren: Blood Curse | Another interpretation of the Siren setting and its survival-horror structure. |
| 2012 | Gravity Rush | Action-adventure in which gravity manipulation replaces conventional traversal. |
| 2017 | Gravity Rush 2 | A larger continuation of the gravity-based action-adventure formula. |
The table describes Bokeh’s selected works for Toyama. It does not mean he was the sole creator of each title or that every credit on each production belongs to him.
Did the same person make Silent Hill and Gravity Rush?
Yes. Keiichiro Toyama is associated with both games, even though they belong to very different genres. Bokeh lists the original Silent Hill and both Gravity Rush games among his selected works. The connection is not that the games use the same formula. It is that Toyama carried a similar interest in building a strong setting and then making the player interact with that setting in an unusual way.
In Silent Hill, the player investigates a town whose fog, darkness and nightmare transformations make ordinary spaces unreliable. In Gravity Rush, the player can redirect gravity, run on walls and fall in any direction. One game makes perception unstable; the other makes physical orientation unstable. Both ask the player to learn a world that does not behave like everyday life.

What defines Toyama’s creative style?
World-building comes before genre labels
In a 2025 interview, Toyama said that what he loves is “creating the background and creating the general world for a video game.” He explained that he thinks about the setting as a basis from which a game’s vision and history can develop. The interview was conducted through a translator, so the quotation should be read as Toyama’s stated creative outlook rather than a rigid production rule.
This helps explain why his projects do not fit a single genre identity. Horror is one tool for expressing a world, not the only subject he wants to explore. When he moved from horror to Gravity Rush, he did not abandon atmosphere; he changed the physical and emotional rules that produce it.
Originality and contrast
Toyama has spoken about wanting Silent Hill to differ from Resident Evil and about playing with light and dark. This is his retrospective account of the project, not a complete explanation of the game’s style. It does, however, point to a recurring method: identify a familiar genre, then find a contrast that makes the game feel unlike its peers.
For Silent Hill, that contrast included oppressive emptiness, limited visibility and a nightmare version of an ordinary American town. For Gravity Rush, it was the decision to make gravity itself a controllable system. For Slitterhead, it is the collision between a crowded city and monsters that can pass as human.
Influences are specific to each work
Toyama said Silent Hill drew inspiration from Stephen King and David Lynch. He also identified Jan Švankmajer’s Alice and Jacob’s Ladder as visible influences on its nightmare atmosphere. These references help describe the game’s psychological and surreal qualities, but they do not mean the game is an adaptation of any one source.
He described Siren as drawing largely on ensemble-cast novels such as Battle Royale and Shiki. That connection is visible in the way the series distributes attention among several characters rather than treating horror as one hero’s private ordeal.
Bokeh also lists films including Eraserhead, Jan Švankmajer’s Alice, The Wicker Man, Santa Sangre, Macross: Do You Remember Love? and Lake of Illusions among Toyama’s favorites. A favorite-film list should not automatically be read as a direct influence on every game; the strongest claims are the ones Toyama made about a particular project.

Silent Hill: horror built from an unstable world
The original Silent Hill, released in 1999, is the clearest example of Toyama using setting as the engine of fear. The player explores a fog-covered town, searches for clues and confronts a world that can shift into a darker, hostile state. Visibility is restricted, familiar locations become threatening, and the boundary between an ordinary place and a nightmare is repeatedly challenged.

Toyama’s stated interest in contrasting light and dark helps frame the game’s structure. Darkness is not merely a visual effect; it changes how the player reads space, anticipates danger and decides whether to investigate or retreat. The result is horror based as much on uncertainty and interpretation as on combat.
The game’s influences also clarify why its tone differs from a straightforward action-horror title. Stephen King’s small-town unease, David Lynch’s dream logic, Švankmajer’s distorted surrealism and Jacob’s Ladder’s psychological terror point toward a nightmare assembled from conflicting realities rather than a simple monster hunt.
Siren: ensemble survival horror
Bokeh lists Siren (2004), Siren 2 (2006) and Siren: Blood Curse (2008) among Toyama’s selected works. The series is related to Silent Hill through its interest in disturbing environments, but its emphasis is different. Toyama connected Siren to ensemble-cast novels such as Battle Royale and Shiki, which is a useful way to understand its multi-character perspective.
Rather than presenting one protagonist’s journey through a symbolic town, Siren follows several people whose situations overlap. The player’s understanding develops by seeing how different characters survive the same crisis. Threat is therefore social as well as physical: a location can be dangerous, but so can the actions and perceptions of the people moving through it.

Both are associated with Toyama, yet their source material, cast structures and methods of creating tension are distinct.
Gravity Rush: action-adventure through gravity manipulation
Gravity Rush demonstrates Toyama’s range beyond horror. It is an action-adventure set in the floating town of Hekseville. The defining ability lets players alter gravity, run on walls and free-fall in any direction. Missions and battles against monsters give that movement a practical purpose rather than treating it as a visual novelty.

How the mechanic changes play
- Traversal: Streets, walls and the undersides of structures can all become routes when the player changes the direction of “down.”
- Combat: Gravity shifts let the player approach enemies from unusual angles and reposition quickly.
- Navigation: The player must read a floating town in three dimensions instead of relying on a conventional ground plane.
- World identity: Hekseville feels like a place governed by different physical assumptions, which makes the mechanic part of the setting rather than a separate power-up.
This is why Gravity Rush is important when assessing Toyama. He did not simply transfer a horror story into a brighter genre. He designed an action-adventure whose central rule changes how the player understands space.
Gravity Rush 2, released in 2017, continues that direction. Bokeh lists it as a selected work, but the available information here does not establish a complete feature-by-feature comparison with the first game or current platform availability for either title. Hardware, storefront and regional support for older releases can vary, so check the relevant retailer or platform listing before buying.
Slitterhead: Toyama’s current studio project
Slitterhead is Bokeh Game Studio’s action-adventure set in Kowlong. The player controls Hyoki, a bodiless entity that can possess human bodies. Hyoki moves between hosts, infiltrates dangerous areas and fights monsters disguised as people.
The possession system
Possession makes the player’s relationship with a character temporary and strategic. A human body is a way to move through the city, approach a threat or fight it; it is not simply a permanent avatar. The ability to change hosts supports the game’s central idea that a crowded urban environment can conceal inhuman danger in plain sight.
Kowlong and the game’s inspirations
A 2024 Game Developer interview reports Toyama’s account of the game’s inspirations: Chinese folklore, Hong Kong cinema and earlier games. The fictional Kowlong is described as a version of Hong Kong, with Kowloon Walled City as a key inspiration. Kowlong in the game is fictional; it should not be treated as a literal recreation of the real historical site.
The same interview recounts Toyama’s discussion of a Chinese story about a human-bodied creature with a dog’s head. That idea informed the conceit of monsters passing as people in a dense city. The reference is best understood as an influence Toyama discussed, not as a claim that the game reproduces one traditional story exactly.
Platforms and physical edition
Bokeh’s official page currently labels Slitterhead “Available Now” and lists PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Epic Games. Bokeh says the physical edition is exclusive to PS5. Because availability pages and regional listings can change, confirm the store page for your country before purchasing.

Where should a new player start?
The best entry point depends on which part of Toyama’s work interests you most.
Start with Silent Hill for psychological horror
Choose the original Silent Hill if you want to see the setting-first approach in its most concentrated form. Expect investigation, restricted visibility and a story that uses place and symbolism to create uncertainty. It is the right starting point for understanding the influences Toyama associated with nightmare fiction and film.
Start with Siren for ensemble survival
Choose Siren if you prefer a horror story that moves among several characters. Its appeal lies in the way separate viewpoints gradually form a larger picture. It is less useful as a first introduction if you want a single, straightforward protagonist and a linear explanation of events.
Start with Gravity Rush for movement and exploration
Choose Gravity Rush if you are most interested in mechanics. The gravity system is immediately legible, but it also changes how you think about level design, combat approach and navigation. It demonstrates that Toyama’s defining interest is not limited to fear.
Start with Slitterhead for his current direction
Choose Slitterhead if you want Bokeh’s contemporary work and a direct look at Toyama’s possession-based action design. Its urban setting, body-swapping and disguised monsters make it the clearest modern example of his interest in unusual worlds with rules that shape the player’s actions.
What is Keiichiro Toyama working on now?
The most concrete current example is Slitterhead, Bokeh Game Studio’s action-adventure for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Epic Games. Bokeh lists it as available now and identifies the PS5 physical edition as exclusive to that console.

That statement describes the studio’s creative aim, not a confirmed list of future projects or release dates. No additional upcoming title or launch schedule is established by the information available here.
Why Toyama’s work still stands out
Toyama’s gameography is unusually varied for a creator associated with a single landmark horror title. The selected works move from Silent Hill’s nightmare town to Siren’s ensemble survival structure, then to Gravity Rush’s impossible physics and Slitterhead’s possession-driven urban combat.
Across those changes, three habits recur: he begins with a distinctive world, he looks for a mechanic that expresses that world, and he treats genre conventions as something to reshape rather than merely repeat. His own emphasis on originality and world-building provides the clearest explanation for the range. Toyama is not defined only by the games he made in the past; he is defined by the question each project asks: what would this world feel like if the player had to live by its rules?
