You might open a Safari page, email, note, map route or document on an iPhone and continue on a Mac or iPad. It can also connect some Apple Watch activities to an iPhone. If you own only an iPhone, rarely use another nearby Apple device, or rely on an app that does not implement Handoff, the feature offers little practical value.
What Handoff does
Apple describes Handoff as a way to “start a task on one Apple device and complete it on another.” It resumes an activity rather than sending you a saved file. When a supported activity is available, a Handoff icon appears at the bottom of the App Switcher on iPhone. On iPad and Mac, it appears in the Dock.

Apple lists Calendar, Clock, Contacts, FaceTime, Freeform, Keynote, Mail, Maps, News, Notes, Numbers, Pages, Reminders, Safari and Stocks among the supported apps. Some third-party apps also work, but only when their developers add Handoff support. The exact experience can therefore differ by app.

People moving between an iPhone and Mac
This is the classic use case. Start writing an email, reading a webpage, checking a map, editing a note or working in a document on your phone, then pick up the activity on a Mac with a larger display and keyboard.

People moving between an iPhone and iPad
An iPad can be a convenient continuation device for reading, composing, drawing or reviewing documents after beginning on an iPhone. The same activity must be supported on both devices.
People using supported third-party apps
Handoff is useful when an app you depend on implements it. If the developer has not provided that integration, the app will not present a Handoff entry even if every device setting is correct.

Some Apple Watch users
Apple supports Handoff for some Watch activities that can continue on an iPhone. Coverage is activity-specific, so it should not be assumed that every Watch app or task can move between devices.
Who is unlikely to need it?
- Someone who owns only one iPhone.
- Someone without a nearby compatible Mac, iPad or supported Apple Watch activity.
- Someone whose main apps do not support Handoff.
- Someone who wants to send a finished file rather than resume an open task.
For a saved photo, document or other file, AirDrop or cloud storage is generally the better category of tool. Handoff is about continuity: reopening the active context on another device.

What you need for Handoff to work
Both devices must meet Apple’s compatibility requirements and have the feature configured correctly.
- Wi-Fi enabled: Apple requires Wi-Fi on both devices.
- Bluetooth enabled: Bluetooth must also be on for both devices.
- The same Apple Account: Sign in to both devices with the same account.
- Handoff enabled: Turn it on in the relevant Continuity or Handoff settings on each device.
- Nearby devices: Keep the devices close. Apple’s Mac troubleshooting guidance uses about 10 metres (30 feet) as the distance to check when Handoff is not appearing.
- Supported software and app: The operating systems and the app must support the activity you are trying to continue.
A VPN or other network configuration that blocks local communication can also prevent Handoff from appearing. Handoff’s security design uses encrypted pairing between nearby iPhone, iPad and Mac devices to protect the activity information. Apple also describes support for continuing between a native app and a website when the developer controls the relevant web domain.

Why you do not see the Handoff icon
- Confirm Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are switched on for both devices.
- Check that both devices use the same Apple Account.
- Verify Handoff is enabled on each device.
- Move the devices closer together, ideally within roughly 10 metres (30 feet).
- Try a known supported Apple app such as Safari, Mail or Notes.
- Check whether a VPN or restrictive network setting is interfering with local connections.
- Make sure both devices run compatible system software and that the third-party app, if applicable, implements Handoff.
If the activity is not supported, no amount of toggling will create a Handoff icon; the developer must provide the integration.

Do not confuse two different “iPhone Handoff” features
“iPhone Handoff” can also refer to a separate cellular feature involving two iPhones. In that arrangement, Apple says calls, voicemail, messages, Find My location and other iCloud-synced data follow whichever iPhone is active. Only one of the two iPhones is active on the cellular network at a time. Availability depends on participating carriers and supported countries or regions.

That carrier-dependent feature is not the same as ordinary Handoff, which moves a supported task between Apple devices. If your question is about continuing Safari or Mail on a Mac or iPad, you mean the ordinary Continuity feature. If your question is about using one phone number on two iPhones, you mean the cellular service and must check carrier and regional eligibility.
The practical answer
Choose Handoff when you frequently begin work on an iPhone but finish it on a nearby Mac or iPad, and the app is one of the supported services. It is most valuable for people who switch screens throughout the day and want the current activity to follow them without manually finding the page, message or document again. It is not a file-transfer system, it does not make unsupported apps compatible, and it provides little benefit without a second nearby Apple device.
