But officials had not publicly confirmed the co-pilot’s identity in the reporting available from Al Jazeera, which said three people with knowledge of the matter—including Gulf and Western diplomats—identified him to the Associated Press. The accusation is not a conviction, and investigators had not established a motive.
What happened on Flydubai Flight FZ1073?
Flight FZ1073 was traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday, September 30, 2026. According to Al Jazeera, the aircraft descended sharply after more than two hours in flight. Passengers and crew entered the cockpit and overpowered the co-pilot, after which two reserve pilots aboard took over and landed the aircraft safely in Tabuk, in northwestern Saudi Arabia. Reports said 174 people were aboard.
Al Jazeera’s account, citing flight-tracking details, said the plane lost more than 17,000 feet in about two minutes, later leveled at approximately 15,000 feet, and landed at 9:45am local time. Those figures are reported incident details, not independently verified here against the aircraft’s flight-data record.
What is al-Hammami accused of?
The UAE said the incident was an attempted terrorist operation. Authorities said the co-pilot attacked Captain Machchhar with the aircraft’s emergency crash axe and tried to take control of the plane. That is the UAE’s characterization of the incident; it should not be read as a completed legal finding about motive or guilt.
