Eric Weinberg is a television writer and producer known for Scrubs and Californication. His Los Angeles criminal trial opened October 1, 2026, with prosecutors alleging sexual assaults during encounters arranged as photo shoots. Seven women’s allegations are charged in the case; an eighth woman whose allegations did not result in charges is expected to testify. The trial reports describe disputed photographs and arguments from both sides, not a verdict.

What is the case about?

Weinberg’s Los Angeles Superior Court criminal trial opened October 1, 2026. Courthouse News Service reported 23 counts across five types of charges; the Los Angeles Times described the case as involving more than 20 counts. Prosecutors say the alleged incidents occurred between 2014 and 2019.

What prosecutors allege

Prosecutors allege Weinberg presented himself as a successful television writer and amateur photographer, met women in public, and invited them to his Los Feliz home for photo shoots that turned into sexual assaults. Deputy District Attorney Ariel Anson argued in opening statements, “This was never about a photo shoot. This was never about modeling. It was all for him.” These are allegations for the jury to assess, not established findings.

What the defense argues

The defense disputes that the encounters were criminal and says prosecutors cannot prove required elements such as force, fear, or that Weinberg knew the women were afraid. Defense attorney Philip Cohen challenged the distinction between offensive behavior and a crime, saying, “This is where ‘creep’ and ‘criminal’ become so critical.” The defense also questioned whether some accounts changed and challenged the accusers’ motives. Those are defense arguments, not court findings.

Why are photographs central to the trial?

Both sides showed jurors sexually explicit photographs taken during the encounters. Prosecutors characterized the images as documentation of assaults. The defense argued that some photographs supported its view that the women appeared to participate and that Weinberg did not know they were afraid. The images are contested evidence: their meaning and weight are for the jury to consider alongside testimony and the rest of the evidence. A photograph by itself does not establish either guilt or consent.

Why are eight women expected to testify?

The number refers to witnesses, not eight charged cases. Seven women’s allegations form the charged case. An eighth woman is expected to testify, but her allegations did not result in charges, according to Variety and MyNewsLA.com.

What happens next?

The trial-opening coverage does not report a verdict. The Los Angeles Times said prosecutors expected the trial to run until mid-December; that was a forecast made at opening, not confirmation of an ending date. Courthouse News Service quoted Cohen asking jurors, “Is he a criminal? That is the question.” The jury has to decide the disputed allegations and whether the prosecution has proved its case.
