His importance to Rockstar is best understood through those franchises rather than as a claim that he personally created every part of each game. Large games are collaborative projects, and the sources cited here do not establish a complete, title-by-title record of his individual credits.
What games did Dan Houser work on?
The clearest documented account is at franchise level: the Guardian credits Houser as lead writer on Grand Theft Auto games from GTA III onward and on Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2. In a 2025 interview with Lex Fridman, Houser singled out GTA IV, GTA V, both Red Dead Redemption games, their additional packs, and Max Payne 3 as part of an especially exciting writing period.

That recollection is not a complete credit list. The available sources do not independently verify every game-level role or release, so it is more accurate to describe his documented body of work through these franchises and the projects he named than to present an exhaustive filmography.
Why did Dan Houser leave Rockstar?
Take-Two’s February 4, 2020 filing said Houser would leave after an extended break that began in spring 2019. It gave March 11, 2020 as his final day at Rockstar. Houser later described his tenure as about 21 years, not an exact employment span.
In interviews, Houser said that working in full production from the start to finish of projects for two decades was intense, and that it was probably the right time to try other things. He has also described 2001–2005 as a particularly exciting period of creative and business experimentation, and the later stretch encompassing GTA IV, GTA V, the Red Dead games and Max Payne 3 as a notable writing period. These comments explain his perspective; they do not establish one definitive cause for his departure.

In his 2025 Lex Fridman interview, Houser discussed projects that did not become released games. GameSpot’s recap reports that an unfinished GTA V expansion featuring Trevor as a secret agent was abandoned when it was about halfway complete. The recap also says that Agent and a medieval-themed Rockstar game did not reach release. These are accounts of unrealized development, not entries in the released gameography.
What is Dan Houser doing now?
After Rockstar, Houser formed Absurd Ventures, which the Guardian describes as a studio building stories across multiple media. Its projects illustrate the shift from a career identified chiefly with major game franchises to a broader mix of formats.
| Project or world | Medium and Houser’s documented role | Status reported by the source |
|---|---|---|
| A Better Paradise | A dystopian story world introduced as a 12-part audio fiction series. Houser adapted it into the novel A Better Paradise Volume One: An Aftermath. | Publishers Weekly identified the March 2025 book as Houser’s debut novel based on the audio series. Houser said a game set in the universe was in development and would take several more years. The Guardian also reported a game in development in December 2025; these are dated status reports, not a current release schedule. |
| American Caper | A comic series co-written with former Rockstar collaborator Lazlow. | The Guardian reported in December 2025 that Houser was considering a story game in the same setting. |
| Another action-comedy world | A further Absurd Ventures story world and game concept. | The Guardian described the concept in December 2025; that report does not establish a release date. |
Project roadmaps can change. The Guardian’s descriptions of the comics and additional game concepts reflect its December 2025 report, while the development outlook for the A Better Paradise game comes from Houser’s March 2025 Publishers Weekly interview.

The sources cited here do not establish that Houser wrote Grand Theft Auto VI. Take-Two’s confirmed departure date for him is March 11, 2020, but that fact alone does not establish the game’s writing credits. Avoid attributing the game to him without a verified credit source.

That is a dated announcement, not confirmation of the game’s current release status. The same announcement reported that GTA V had sold more than 190 million units and the Red Dead Redemption franchise more than 81 million units worldwide at that time; those are publisher figures from 2023, not current totals.
Why his career matters
Houser’s career connects two distinct phases of game storytelling: the Rockstar franchises that made him widely known, and the cross-media worlds Absurd Ventures is developing after his departure. His best-documented legacy at Rockstar is as a lead writer on Grand Theft Auto from GTA III onward and on both Red Dead Redemption games. His newer work shows an interest in carrying story worlds between audio, print, comics and games, though the projects’ future release plans remain subject to change.
