Charles Lamanna is a Microsoft executive with a growing role in the company’s Copilot and productivity businesses. He is not a publicly designated successor to CEO Satya Nadella. Separately, The Information reports that Microsoft was on track to pay Anthropic more than $2 billion a year for models used in Copilot; Microsoft’s published materials reviewed here do not confirm that annual figure.

Who is Charles Lamanna?

GeekWire identifies Lamanna as Microsoft’s executive vice president of Copilot, Agents, and Platform. In that role, he leads teams behind Copilot platforms, Work IQ, Agent 365, Copilot Studio, Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, Power Platform, and SharePoint, according to a profile published August 6, 2026. His path through Microsoft has included multiple returns. GeekWire says he interned at the company, returned in 2009 to work on message-filtering services, and came back again after Microsoft acquired MetricsHub, his cloud performance-management startup, in 2013. He later worked on Azure and led Power Platform and Dynamics 365 before taking his current role in March 2026.

In GeekWire’s account, Lamanna has characterized the goal as combining the pace of an AI startup with Microsoft’s operating style: “We need to have AI startup and lab characteristics but with Microsoft sensibilities.” He also called the company’s fragmented Copilot portfolio “Copilot Palooza,” referring to separate consumer, commercial, and GitHub Copilot efforts.

What does Charles Lamanna do at Microsoft?

Lamanna’s remit sits at the intersection of Microsoft’s AI products and its established productivity and business software. Microsoft’s March 17, 2026 announcement said Lamanna, Ryan Roslansky, and Perry Clarke would lead Microsoft 365 apps and the Copilot platform. The same announcement said Jacob Andreou would lead the Copilot experience and report to Nadella. Microsoft’s March 2026 Copilot leadership update

That structure matters because Copilot is not a single product team: it spans user experiences, underlying platforms, and Microsoft’s productivity and business applications. The official announcement establishes Lamanna’s leadership remit, while GeekWire’s profile provides the broader list of teams and products associated with his role.

Microsoft’s October 1, 2026 update announced that Roslansky planned to leave at year-end and that Sumit Chauhan and Lan Ye would report to Lamanna. This is the latest official reporting-line update in the sources reviewed. It indicates an expanded management scope, but a reporting-line change is not a CEO succession announcement. Is Charles Lamanna a possible successor to Satya Nadella?

He may be discussed as a possible candidate, but the available evidence does not establish that Microsoft has selected him—or formally identified him—as Nadella’s successor. The Information suggests Lamanna’s work on Copilot could strengthen his credentials if Nadella eventually decides to move on. That is the publication’s analysis, not a company succession plan. The Information’s report on Lamanna and Copilot

Microsoft’s March and October 2026 leadership announcements describe executive responsibilities and reporting lines. Neither names Lamanna as a designated successor. His expanding portfolio is relevant context for speculation about his future, but it should not be mistaken for confirmation.

Is Microsoft really paying Anthropic more than $2 billion a year?

The Information reports that Microsoft was on track to pay Anthropic more than $2 billion per year for models used to power Copilot. The article attributes the estimate to a person familiar with the matter. It also reports that Microsoft’s use of OpenAI models for some advanced Copilot features, alongside routing requests to lower-cost models, helped temper the increase.

The figure is a reported estimate, not an amount Microsoft has publicly confirmed in the sources reviewed. Microsoft’s FY2026 second-quarter earnings-call transcript mentions a previously announced Anthropic commitment and broader AI infrastructure and Copilot investment, but does not confirm annual payments above $2 billion or provide a matching Copilot-specific annual spend figure. An official reference to a commitment is not confirmation of the reported annual amount. Microsoft FY2026 second-quarter earnings-call transcript

The available reporting also does not provide a full, independently measured comparison of the models’ quality, cost, latency, or availability across Copilot tasks. The reported model routing describes an approach to balancing those considerations; it does not establish which model is best overall.
