Anakin Skywalker is a Force-sensitive boy from Tatooine who becomes a Jedi, falls to the dark side and takes the name Darth Vader, then returns to the light when he saves his son Luke. The films tell his central life story; The Clone Wars adds depth to his years as a Jedi general, and Rebels shows the cost of his fall through his former Padawan, Ahsoka Tano.

Spoilers: This guide covers major story turns through Return of the Jedi, including Anakin’s transformation into Vader and his final act.

Who is Anakin Skywalker?

Anakin is the person who becomes Darth Vader. His story is not simply a change from hero to villain: he begins as a caring and gifted child, grows into a celebrated Jedi and wartime leader, and is drawn toward the dark side by fear, grief and Palpatine’s manipulation. StarWars.com describes him as “caring and compassionate” but says his deep fear of loss becomes his downfall. StarWars.com’s Anakin Skywalker Databank entry provides the official character biography.

How does Anakin’s story begin?

A childhood on Tatooine

In The Phantom Menace, Anakin lives as a slave with his mother, Shmi, on Tatooine. He is nine years old when Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi encounter him. Qui-Gon recognizes Anakin’s strong connection to the Force. Anakin wins the Boonta Eve podrace, and the wager secures his freedom, allowing him to leave Tatooine and begin Jedi training. StarWars.com’s film summaries describe his discovery and the events of the prequel films.

Love, loss and early warning signs

In Attack of the Clones, Anakin is Obi-Wan’s apprentice and is assigned to protect Senator Padmé Amidala. They fall in love and marry in secret. Anakin’s fear and anger are already apparent. After a duel with Count Dooku, he loses an arm, which is replaced with a mechanical one.

What does The Clone Wars add to Anakin’s story?

The Clone Wars follows Anakin after he becomes a Jedi Knight and general. It gives more space to his leadership and relationships than the films can, especially his bond with Ahsoka Tano, whom Yoda assigns to him as a Padawan. The assignment is also meant to help Anakin learn to let go of someone he cares about.

Anakin and Ahsoka grow close, but their trust in the Jedi Order is tested when she is framed and the Order abandons her. She leaves the Order. That separation matters later: Ahsoka is not just another Jedi survivor when she encounters Vader, but Anakin’s former student and friend. Dan Zehr’s StarWars.com feature on how The Clone Wars explores Anakin’s journey discusses the series’ role in that relationship.

How does Anakin become Darth Vader?

In Revenge of the Sith, Anakin fears that Padmé will die in childbirth. Palpatine exploits that fear by suggesting Sith knowledge could prevent death. He reveals himself as Darth Sidious and draws Anakin into his plans. Anakin helps Sidious, accepts the name Darth Vader and participates in the purge of the Jedi.

On Mustafar, Obi-Wan defeats Anakin. Anakin is badly burned and loses limbs; he survives in life-supporting armor under Palpatine’s control. The transformation is physical and political as well as moral: Anakin becomes Vader, a Sith Lord serving the Emperor. The Darth Vader Databank entry recounts his fall and service to Palpatine.

Why is Ahsoka’s encounter with Vader important?

In Star Wars Rebels, Vader hunts surviving Jedi. On Malachor, Ahsoka realizes the Sith Lord is Anakin, her former master. Their duel brings the personal cost of his fall into focus: the person who taught and cared for her is now the enemy she must face. The episode “Twilight of the Apprentice” is the key point in Rebels for this part of Anakin’s story. Kelly Knox’s StarWars.com history of Ahsoka Tano traces her relationship with Anakin and her later confrontation with Vader.

How does Anakin return to the light?

In Return of the Jedi, Luke believes there is still good in his father. When the Emperor attacks Luke, Vader turns against his master and saves his son, killing the Emperor in the process. Vader dies from his wounds. StarWars.com describes Luke’s compassion as awakening the good that had long been dormant in the Sith Lord; Anakin returns to the light in his final act.

Which movies and shows tell Anakin’s story?

For a straightforward route through the character arc, watch the main films in release-era story order, then add the animated series where they expand the relationships and events:

  1. The Phantom Menace: Anakin’s childhood, freedom and first steps toward Jedi training.
  2. Attack of the Clones: His apprenticeship, relationship with Padmé and growing anger.
  3. Revenge of the Sith: His fall and transformation into Darth Vader.
  4. The Clone Wars: His years as a Jedi general and his relationship with Ahsoka. StarWars.com points to the theatrical Clone Wars story and the episodes “Padawan Lost,” “Wookiee Hunt” and “The Wrong Jedi” as useful Ahsoka-related viewing.
  5. Star Wars Rebels: Ahsoka’s confrontation with Vader, especially “Twilight of the Apprentice.”
  6. Return of the Jedi: Anakin’s redemption and the end of his arc.

This is one practical character-focused route, not the only valid way to watch Star Wars. The animated series expand the film story rather than replace its central arc. The official StarWars.com film page includes summaries of the films, including the theatrical Clone Wars movie.
