What did Apple appoint Amar Subramanya to do?
Apple’s December 1, 2025 announcement named Subramanya vice president of AI and said he would report to Craig Federighi. The company identified three areas under his leadership:

- Machine-learning research
- AI Safety and Evaluation
Apple described the appointment as a way to bring together AI research and product integration. That was the company’s rationale for the move, not a measure of results already achieved. Apple’s announcement also quoted CEO Tim Cook saying AI had long been central to Apple’s strategy and welcoming Subramanya’s expertise.
How does his background relate to the role?
Apple said Subramanya most recently served as corporate vice president of AI at Microsoft. Before that, he spent 16 years at Google, where Apple identified him as head of engineering for Gemini Assistant. The 16-year tenure is Apple’s description in its 2025 announcement.

That background connects his experience in AI leadership and assistant engineering with the research and foundation-model responsibilities Apple assigned him. It does not, by itself, establish how Apple’s products will perform or what Subramanya personally built.
Which former AI responsibilities went elsewhere?
Subramanya’s appointment was part of a broader leadership transition. John Giannandrea was stepping down, becoming an adviser, and was expected to retire in spring 2026. Apple said the remaining parts of Giannandrea’s organization would be divided in part between operations chief Sabih Khan and services chief Eddy Cue.
Apple identified Search and Knowledge and AI Infrastructure among the areas in the prior organization. Its announcement did not assign every former AI function to Subramanya; the specific remit it named for him was Apple Foundation Models, machine-learning research, and AI Safety and Evaluation.

How does the appointment connect to Apple’s Siri plans?
At the time of the appointment, Apple said Federighi was overseeing work toward a more personalized Siri. Reuters also reported in December 2025 that Siri improvements had been delayed until 2026. Those were plans and reporting at the time, not a guarantee that a particular feature would arrive on a particular device or date. Later coverage provides more detail about Apple’s program, while keeping responsibility broader than one executive:
- In March 2026, Axios reported that Apple hired Lilian Rincon to lead AI product marketing and described a multiyear Google partnership. The report said the arrangement gives Apple the ability to run Gemini models from its own devices and servers; it does not establish that Subramanya personally negotiated the partnership.
- In a June 9, 2026 report on Apple’s WWDC Siri briefing, TechRadar described an architecture combining on-device and cloud models, and reported that Subramanya discussed collaboration with Google to extend Private Cloud Compute to third-party cloud. The article also described Nvidia technology. These are reported details of Apple’s briefing, not independently verified specifications or a promise of availability on every device.
The reporting places Subramanya in the public discussion of Apple’s AI work, but it does not show that he alone designed, built, or delivered the reported Siri architecture. Apple’s teams and partners are part of that wider effort.

Apple’s appointment announcement establishes his title and reporting line as of December 1, 2025. June 2026 coverage still identified him as Apple’s VP of AI, but the cited sources do not independently confirm his exact title or reporting line on October 4, 2026. They also do not provide independently verified performance measures for Apple AI under his leadership.
