Roblox identifies David Baszucki and Erik Cassel as its founders and says the company was founded in 2004. An earlier project helps explain the platform’s inspiration: the founders programmed a 2D simulated physics lab in 1989, according to Roblox’s later SEC filing. That lab was a precursor in the story, not Roblox itself.
Who founded Roblox?
Roblox names David Baszucki and Erik Cassel as its founders. The company’s official information says they founded Roblox in 2004. In a January 2022 letter, Baszucki described the original ambition as creating a shared digital experience where people could “play, learn, and work together.”

That vision helps explain the project’s direction, but the clearest dates come from separate parts of Roblox’s history: an earlier technical influence and the company’s legal formation.

Roblox’s 2021 SEC registration statement says Baszucki and Cassel programmed a 2D simulated physics lab in 1989. The filing connects that experience to the founders’ later approach to Roblox. It does not say that Roblox itself was founded or launched in 1989.

So, “Roblox began in 1989” is misleading unless it is carefully qualified: the company describes the 1989 simulation as part of its intellectual roots, while its company information places Roblox’s founding in 2004.
What does “founded in 2004” mean?
Roblox’s 2024 Form 10-K, filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, states that Roblox Corporation was incorporated under Delaware law in March 2004. That is a specific legal fact about the corporation. Roblox’s company page gives the broader founding year as 2004.

Incorporation is not the same event as opening a platform to the public. The filing establishes when the company was legally formed; it does not, by itself, establish a beta date, the first account, or a public-release date.
Who were the first Roblox builders?
Roblox describes its first couple hundred builders as a mix of developers, investors, testers, and friends of the founders. That account points to an early group involved in building and trying the platform, not a clearly documented general-public launch.

The company also says it is difficult to identify the first Roblox player because some early accounts remain active. Accordingly, a specific person should not be presented as the first player as though Roblox has confirmed it.

The evidence supports a narrower timeline: a 1989 physics simulation that Roblox later described as an influence, followed by the company’s 2004 founding and March 2004 incorporation. It does not support using those dates to infer a precise launch or renaming chronology.
