The Green Lantern Corps is DC’s intergalactic peacekeeping force: its members use power rings that turn willpower into hard-light constructs and other abilities. The rings are powerful but not inexhaustible; they draw energy from the Central Power Battery on Oa and must be recharged.
Who are the Green Lantern Corps?
DC describes the Corps as an intergalactic police force whose members come from sentient species across the cosmos. Its base of operations is Oa, where the Central Power Battery supplies the Corps’ rings. DC’s character page names human members including Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz.

That page gives the organization a history of more than three billion years, 7,200 members and 3,600 sectors. These are fictional-universe figures stated by DC, not real-world statistics, and should be understood as the scale described on that character page rather than numbers guaranteed across every continuity.
How a Lantern is chosen
According to DC’s Green Lantern ring explainer, rings select wielders for strength of will, and a wearer’s willpower affects how effectively the ring works. DC editor Matt Idelson adds a possible wrinkle in a 2012 editorial interview: a ring’s choice may also reflect a personality profile resembling its previous wearer. That is an editorial observation, not a rule that applies identically in every story.

Hal Jordan’s origin is one example of how a ring reaches a new wielder. DC’s Hal Jordan biography says that when alien Green Lantern Abin Sur’s spacecraft crashes, Abin entrusts his ring and Earth-sector duties to Hal. It is a particular succession story, not a template for every Lantern’s selection.
What can a Green Lantern power ring do?
The ring projects green hard energy into shapes its wearer imagines. A Lantern can form something as simple as a restraint or as elaborate as a vehicle. The construct’s form comes from the wearer’s imagination, while the ring’s effectiveness is linked to willpower; it is not simply a matter of picturing an object.

DC’s explainer also lists these functions:
- Protection: a force field can shield the wearer.
- Movement: flight and travel through space.
- Communication and navigation: translation between languages, communication with Corps members and emergency homing.
- Information: access to information from the Book of Oa.
- Uniform: the ring can generate the Lantern’s uniform.
These are capabilities described by DC, though particular stories may depict or emphasize them differently. Other Lantern Corps colors also have distinct emotional associations in DC editorial discussion: green with willpower, yellow with fear, blue with hope, red with rage, violet with love, orange with greed and indigo with compassion. Those associations do not mean the different rings are interchangeable or work identically.

How are the rings powered and recharged?
The energy chain runs from the Central Power Battery on Oa to a Lantern’s personal power battery, which acts as a remote charging source for the ring. The ring’s energy is finite: using its abilities depletes its charge. DC’s 2011 explainer estimates that a charge lasts approximately 24 Earth hours, but that figure is a lore detail from that article, not an invariant limit across every story.

DC says Lanterns recharge by reciting the oath. Its Corps page says members speak the ancient oath before charging; the 2011 explainer gives this wording:
“In Brightest Day, In Blackest Night, No Evil Shall Escape My Sight– Let Those Who Worship Evil’s Might, Beware My Power– Green Lantern’s Light!”

A ring’s range of constructs and functions does not make it an unlimited resource. If its charge runs out, the wearer loses access to those ring-powered abilities until it can be charged again. That creates a tactical constraint: Lanterns must account for energy use rather than assume every construct or protective field can be sustained indefinitely.
