Brian K. Vaughan is the writer and co-creator; Cliff Chiang is the artist and co-creator. Their best-documented shared project is Paper Girls, an Image Comics series collected in Paper Girls: The Complete Story, published on November 2, 2021. Vaughan is also known for Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Pride of Baghdad, Runaways, Saga and other work for major DC and Marvel characters. Chiang’s publisher biography highlights work on The Creeper, Human Target, Green Arrow, Black Canary and Wonder Woman.

This guide separates their individual careers from their collaboration, explains what the collected edition contains according to the publisher’s listing, and gives you a practical way to choose a starting point without treating an incomplete bibliography as a definitive one.

Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang in one sentence

Vaughan and Chiang are two different kinds of comics creators whose most clearly documented joint project is Paper Girls. Vaughan supplies the writing and co-creation; Chiang supplies the art and co-creation. That division is useful when you are deciding what to read: Vaughan’s solo and co-created writing credits point toward one path, while Chiang’s art credits point toward another. Paper Girls is the direct route to experiencing both together.

“Writer” and “artist” describe their principal credited roles, not a ranking of importance. A modern comic is built from a combination of script, visual storytelling, lettering, color and production. The available publisher descriptions identify Vaughan and Chiang as the central creative partners on Paper Girls; the complete collection is additionally credited to Matt Wilson. The safest way to understand the book is therefore as a team production, not as a Vaughan story with incidental illustrations or a Chiang art showcase without a writer.

Who is Brian K. Vaughan?

Vaughan’s role in comics

Brian K. Vaughan is a comics writer and co-creator. His representative credits span creator-owned projects and work involving major DC and Marvel characters. The list most often used to orient new readers includes Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Pride of Baghdad, Runaways, Saga and Paper Girls.

Those titles should be read as signposts rather than a complete bibliography. The available biographies establish representative work, not every issue, short story, special, adaptation credit or collaboration. If you need a full chronological checklist, you would have to consult current bibliographic records for each publisher and edition. This guide stays with the credits that are clearly established and useful for choosing a first book.

What a Vaughan credit tells you

A Vaughan writing credit means that the story’s verbal and structural elements are central to his contribution: characters, dialogue, scene progression and the larger narrative design. In a co-created comic, that does not mean the artist is merely executing instructions. It means the published work should be understood as the result of a creative partnership, with the writer’s principal responsibility identified in the credit line.

For a newcomer, Vaughan’s best-known titles offer a way to sample different kinds of writing without assuming that one book represents his entire career. Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Pride of Baghdad, Runaways and Saga are all named in his representative body of work, while Paper Girls adds the specific opportunity to read his collaboration with Chiang.

Who is Cliff Chiang?

Chiang’s role in comics

Cliff Chiang is a comics artist and co-creator. His publisher biography names work on The Creeper, Human Target, Green Arrow, Black Canary and Wonder Woman. He also co-created Paper Girls with Vaughan.

Calling Chiang an artist is not a way of reducing his contribution to decoration. In comics, the artist controls the visual interpretation of a script or story concept: page composition, acting, movement, setting, visual emphasis and the rhythm created by panels. The exact division of labor can vary from project to project, but the documented credit on Paper Girls identifies Chiang as a co-creator, making his contribution part of the book’s identity rather than an interchangeable production step.

Chiang’s broader reading path

Readers who discover Chiang through Paper Girls can follow his work into the publisher-listed DC projects. Wonder Woman is the most prominent DC example named in the available biography, alongside Green Arrow and Black Canary. The Creeper and Human Target broaden the list beyond those superhero names.

As with Vaughan’s credits, this is a representative selection, not a claim that these are Chiang’s only comics. A creator’s bibliography can include different editions, interior pages, covers, short stories and other assignments. The names above are the reliable starting points established by the biographies used for this guide.

What did Vaughan and Chiang make together?

Paper Girls

Paper Girls is the clearest shared work documented for Vaughan and Chiang. Image Comics announced it as an ongoing series by the two creators. The official publisher listing for Paper Girls: The Complete Story credits Brian K. Vaughan, Cliff Chiang and Matt Wilson, with Image Comics as publisher, and gives November 2, 2021 as the publication date.

The complete collection is the most practical starting point for someone specifically looking for their collaboration. It puts the documented shared series in one named edition instead of requiring a new reader to identify individual installments. Because the publisher calls it “The Complete Story,” the edition is also the clearest single-volume expression of the series as a finished reading project, subject to the availability and contents of the edition you obtain.

An earlier collaboration

Do not describe Paper Girls as Vaughan and Chiang’s first work together. Image Comics’ announcement says Vaughan had previously collaborated with his “old friend Cliff Chiang” on a Swamp Thing short story almost 15 years earlier. That statement establishes an earlier joint project while leaving the exact story title and publication details outside the evidence used here.

Vaughan’s quoted comment is: “I’m overjoyed to finally launch a second series for Image, especially because I’m doing it with my old friend Cliff Chiang, who I last collaborated with on a Swamp Thing short story almost 15 years ago.” The wording is Vaughan’s, reproduced in Image Comics’ announcement. It is useful context because it explains why the later series represents a reunion as well as a new launch.

How their roles fit together on Paper Girls

The simplest credit map is:

Creator Documented role What that means for a reader
Brian K. Vaughan Writer and co-creator He is the named writing partner and one of the people who created the series.
Cliff Chiang Artist and co-creator He is the named visual partner and one of the people who created the series.
Matt Wilson Credited in Paper Girls: The Complete Story The publisher’s listing includes him in the collected-edition credits; the specific role is not stated in the available material.
Image Comics Publisher of the listed complete edition The official listing identifies the publisher and the November 2, 2021 publication date.

This table intentionally avoids assigning an unverified job title to Wilson. A collected edition may list several contributors, and a reader should use the edition’s own indicia and credits for the complete production breakdown.

Where should a Vaughan newcomer start?

If you want the Vaughan–Chiang partnership

Start with Paper Girls: The Complete Story. It is the edition directly identified by the publisher as the complete collected story and the one that presents Vaughan and Chiang’s documented shared series in a single package. This is the answer to the narrow question, “Which Vaughan book also lets me read Chiang as a co-creator?”

If you want to sample Vaughan’s writing beyond this partnership

Choose among the representative Vaughan titles named in the biographies: Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Pride of Baghdad, Runaways or Saga. The available material does not establish a single objectively best first book, a definitive reading order or edition-by-edition comparisons among them. Your choice should therefore reflect whether you want a Vaughan work without Chiang as the documented artistic partner, rather than an assumed ranking.

If you found Vaughan through a screen adaptation

Keep the medium distinction clear. A 2022 Syfy Wire interview described Vaughan and Chiang as co-creators and executive producers on the television adaptation of Paper Girls. That interview confirms their involvement in the adaptation at that time; it does not, by itself, establish where the program is currently available. Streaming catalogs and regional rights change, so check a current service listing in your country before planning a viewing.

Where should a Chiang newcomer start?

If you want his shared creator-owned work

Use Paper Girls: The Complete Story for the same reason as a Vaughan newcomer: it is the clearly documented book in which Chiang is both artist and co-creator with Vaughan. The complete edition lets you evaluate the partnership as a sustained project rather than inferring it from a short sample.

If you want his publisher-listed DC work

Explore the titles named in Chiang’s biography: Wonder Woman, Green Arrow and Black Canary. The Creeper and Human Target are also part of the publisher’s representative list. The evidence available here does not specify which collected editions contain all of his pages, which stories are easiest to find, or how his role differs between interior art and other credited work. Check the credits in the particular edition before assuming that a book contains a complete Chiang run.

How to compare the available starting points

When two or more comics are competing for your first purchase or library hold, compare them using the questions below rather than an unsupported “best” ranking.

  • Do you want both creators together? Choose Paper Girls: The Complete Story; it is the documented Vaughan–Chiang collaboration.
  • Do you want Vaughan’s writing in a different collaboration? Select one of the representative Vaughan titles, such as Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Pride of Baghdad, Runaways or Saga.
  • Do you want Chiang’s work in a major DC property? Look among the biography’s named examples, especially Wonder Woman, Green Arrow and Black Canary.
  • Do you need one contained purchase? The publisher’s “Complete Story” edition is the most explicit single-volume option identified here.
  • Do you need a specific format, issue range or regional release? Verify the edition record directly. Those details are not established by the available biographies and announcement.

Genre labels and format descriptions can be useful, but they should be attached to the particular edition or series being discussed. The reliable comparison in this guide is creator role and collaboration status, not a fabricated scorecard of tone, sales, awards or readership.

What is established—and what is not

Established by publisher and biography material

  • Vaughan is a comics writer and co-creator.
  • Chiang is a comics artist and co-creator.
  • They co-created Paper Girls.
  • Image Comics announced Paper Girls as an ongoing series by Vaughan and Chiang.
  • Image Comics lists Paper Girls: The Complete Story with Vaughan, Chiang and Matt Wilson, published November 2, 2021.
  • Vaughan’s representative works include Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Pride of Baghdad, Runaways and Saga.
  • Chiang’s publisher biography names The Creeper, Human Target, Green Arrow, Black Canary and Wonder Woman.
  • The creators had an earlier collaboration on a Swamp Thing short story, described by Vaughan as occurring almost 15 years before the Paper Girls launch.
  • A 2022 interview described them as co-creators and executive producers on the television adaptation.

Not established by the available material

  • A complete, current bibliography for either creator.
  • A definitive chronological reading order for Vaughan’s or Chiang’s entire careers.
  • Sales totals, award counts, readership figures or other numerical performance claims.
  • The exact contents, page count, format options or regional pricing of every Paper Girls edition.
  • Current streaming availability for the television adaptation.
  • The exact title and publication date of the earlier Swamp Thing short story.
  • A role assignment for Matt Wilson beyond his appearance in the collected-edition credit line.

Keeping these boundaries visible protects readers from a common comics-guide error: treating a representative publisher biography as an exhaustive database. The names above are enough to choose a starting point, but not enough to settle every bibliographic question.

A practical reading plan

Plan A: one book, both creators

  1. Locate Paper Girls: The Complete Story and confirm that the edition identifies Brian K. Vaughan, Cliff Chiang and Matt Wilson.
  2. Check the publication and format information for the copy available in your region; the publisher’s listed publication date is November 2, 2021.
  3. Read the collection as a single Vaughan–Chiang project, paying attention to how the writing credit and visual credit work together.
  4. If the television adaptation interests you, treat it as a separate adaptation and verify current availability locally rather than assuming the 2022 interview reflects present-day distribution.

Plan B: Vaughan first, then the collaboration

  1. Choose one representative Vaughan title—Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Pride of Baghdad, Runaways or Saga.
  2. After sampling his writing outside this partnership, read Paper Girls: The Complete Story to see his work with Chiang.
  3. Use the credit line to distinguish Vaughan’s writing contribution from the visual collaboration instead of assuming every Vaughan title has the same artistic team.

Plan C: Chiang first, then the partnership

  1. Start with a Chiang-associated title named by his publisher, such as Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, Black Canary, The Creeper or Human Target.
  2. Verify the specific edition’s credits and contents, because the available biography does not identify a complete collection for each named property.
  3. Read Paper Girls: The Complete Story next for Chiang’s documented role as artist and co-creator with Vaughan.

Why the collaboration matters to a new reader

The value of reading Vaughan and Chiang together is not simply that two recognizable names appear on one cover. Their credits represent complementary responsibilities in a medium where the story is communicated through words and images at the same time. Vaughan’s writing credit identifies the narrative partner; Chiang’s artist credit identifies the visual partner; the co-creator designation identifies shared ownership of the project’s underlying concept.

That combination also explains why a single title can serve two different entry points. A Vaughan reader can use Paper Girls to encounter Chiang’s art in a sustained collaboration. A Chiang reader can use it to encounter Vaughan’s writing in a series where Chiang is not an outside illustrator but a named co-creator. The complete edition makes that partnership easier to study because the reader is not forced to reconstruct it from scattered references.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling Vaughan the artist. The documented principal role is writer and co-creator.
  • Calling Chiang only an illustrator. The documented role is artist and co-creator.
  • Calling Paper Girls their first collaboration. Vaughan’s Image Comics quote refers to an earlier Swamp Thing short story.
  • Claiming the listed titles are complete bibliographies. They are representative works named by biographies.
  • Assigning an unverified role to Matt Wilson. The collected-edition listing credits him but does not establish the role in the material used here.
  • Assuming a 2022 adaptation interview proves current streaming access. Availability depends on time and region.
  • Inventing sales, awards or readership numbers. No numerical figures are established for this guide.

Bottom line for choosing your first comic

If your goal is to read Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang together, choose Paper Girls: The Complete Story, the Image Comics collection listed as published November 2, 2021. If you want Vaughan’s wider writing career, begin with one of the representative titles named above; if you want Chiang’s work in other settings, use the publisher’s named projects as a verified shortlist. The evidence supports those paths without pretending to provide an exhaustive bibliography or a permanent guide to adaptation availability.
