A white or blank screen is a symptom, not a single fault. The same empty display can come from a loose cable, a stalled Windows process, a graphics driver problem, a failed update, or a Mac whose startup disk cannot be read. The fastest route to a fix is to identify what the screen shows and when it appears, then work through the low-risk checks before any recovery step that could change your files.
This guide covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 and Mac startup problems. Menu names and recovery options vary by Windows release, configuration, and Mac model, so confirm each option’s description before you select it.

What a blank screen can mean
Microsoft’s support article “Troubleshooting blank screens in Windows” treats a blank display as several different scenarios: a screen with only a cursor, a blank login screen, a blank screen after an update, and a blinking cursor. Apple’s guide “If your Mac starts up to a blank screen” says a blank startup screen can be software-related and gives it a separate recovery path. Neither vendor treats the color white as proof of a particular failure. Use the table below to match your symptom to a branch.

Start with the display path
Before changing any software setting, rule out the simplest causes. These steps cost nothing and take a few minutes.

- Confirm the computer is plugged in or has charge. A laptop that is off or in sleep can look blank.
- If you use an external monitor, confirm the monitor is powered on and set to the correct input.
- Unplug the display cable at both ends, then reconnect it firmly.
- Disconnect external displays and peripherals from a laptop and restart it.
- If you have a known-working cable or monitor with matching ports, try it. Use this only as a comparison. A good result points to the cable or external display path; a bad result does not prove the internal screen or graphics hardware has failed.
Windows: quick checks
These checks take less than a minute each and are safe to repeat.
Reset the graphics driver
Press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B. Microsoft notes that a beep or a brief screen flicker can indicate the shortcut worked. If the screen returns, save your work and check whether the problem comes back after restarts.
Cycle display modes
Press Windows+P, then press P again, then Enter. Each press changes how the displays are used, which can bring back an image that was sent to a disconnected or inactive output.

Restart Windows Explorer
If you can see a cursor, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. Find Windows Explorer, select it, and choose Restart. If Explorer is not listed, select File > Run new task, type explorer.exe, and press Enter. If Ctrl+Alt+Delete opens the security screen but the desktop stays blank, use Task Manager from that screen to restart Explorer the same way.
Windows: if the screen is still blank
If the quick checks fail, Microsoft describes forcing the PC into the Recovery environment after repeated forced shutdowns, then selecting Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart and choosing Safe Mode with Networking. Safe Mode loads a minimal set of drivers, which helps separate a driver problem from a general system fault.
Check and update the graphics driver
In Safe Mode, open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, and review the graphics adapter. Update the driver if a newer one is appropriate for your hardware. The menu names and access path can differ by Windows release, so follow the labels you see.

Roll back a recent driver update
If the blank screen started after a graphics driver update, open the adapter’s Properties in Device Manager, go to the Driver tab, and select Roll Back Driver. This is the right step when the timing points to the update rather than a hardware change.
Use System Restore
If the problem began recently, System Restore from the Recovery environment is a supported next step. It rolls back system files and settings to an earlier restore point, and it is generally less disruptive than a reset or reinstall. It can only help if a restore point exists from before the problem started.
Before you choose a reset or reinstall
Recovery options do not all have the same consequences. Microsoft’s “Recovery options in Windows” guide recommends backing up important files before recovery, and warns that some recovery methods can cause data loss. The options shown depend on your Windows version and configuration.

- Copy important files first to an external drive or cloud storage if the PC still starts or can be reached from Safe Mode.
- System Restore changes system files and settings, not personal documents, but it cannot undo a restore that has already been applied.
- Reset or reinstall options can remove apps or files. Read the description on each screen before continuing.
Mac: a blank startup screen
Apple’s guidance applies to Macs that turn on but show a blank screen during startup. If the Mac does not turn on at all, Apple’s “If your Mac doesn’t turn on” guide starts with checking the power connection and removing accessories before retrying.
Force the Mac off and restart
Hold the power button for up to about 10 seconds until the Mac turns off, then press the power button again to turn it on. Watch for the startup process to continue past the blank screen.

Start macOS Recovery and run Disk Utility
- Start macOS Recovery. Apple’s guide describes the method for your Mac’s chip type; use the instructions shown there.
- Open Disk Utility and select the startup disk.
- Run First Aid on the startup disk.
- Restart the Mac from the Apple menu and see whether the blank screen clears.
Reinstall macOS
If the blank screen continues after Disk Utility, return to macOS Recovery and reinstall macOS. Reinstalling macOS does not erase your user files, but it is a more involved step; back up first if you can.

If Recovery will not start
Apple says Macs with Apple silicon or the T2 chip may need firmware revival or restoration when Recovery does not start. Apple’s guide describes these as separate procedures, so confirm the exact steps for your model before starting them.
Intel Macs and the SMC reset
An SMC reset applies only to older Intel-based Macs. Apple says it is not needed on Macs with Apple silicon. Do not apply the Intel reset sequence to other Macs as a general fix.
Flashing question-mark folder
A flashing question-mark folder means the startup disk is unavailable or does not contain a working macOS installation. From macOS Recovery, run Disk Utility’s First Aid on the disk. If errors cannot be repaired, or the disk does not appear in Disk Utility, the drive may need service.

Stop troubleshooting and contact qualified service if the vendor procedure fails, if a Mac shows a blank startup screen after reinstalling macOS, or if the disk cannot be repaired or detected. Apple’s guidance states that a Mac that continues to start up to a blank screen may need service. Before you visit a repair shop, record the symptom, when it started, and which steps you already tried, so the technician can start from there.
