White material on a laptop can be loose surface residue, a persistent mark, or a sign of a spill; its appearance alone cannot identify the cause. First check where it is and whether it wipes away. For a mark on the display, power down and begin with a clean, soft, dry cloth. If the material seems to be inside the laptop, followed a spill, or appears with new problems, stop cleaning and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair service.
Start by locating the white material
Check whether it is on the display, casing, keyboard, or apparently inside the machine. Note whether it is loose or persistent, whether there was a recent spill, and whether the laptop is behaving differently. These clues help determine what to do, but they do not establish what the material is.

- On the display: Treat it as a surface-cleaning question first; do not scrape or press hard.
- On the casing or keyboard: Check the care instructions for that surface and model.
- Inside the laptop, after a spill, or alongside malfunction: Stop routine cleaning and seek support.
How to clean a mark on the display
- Turn the laptop off and disconnect its power.
- Gently wipe the display with a clean, soft, dry, non-abrasive cloth, such as a lint-free cloth.
- If the mark remains, check the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model before using any liquid cleaner. If the instructions permit a liquid, apply it to the cloth rather than spraying the screen.
Do not scrape the display, press hard, or let moisture enter openings. Do not assume isopropyl alcohol—or any cleaner permitted for another device or surface—is safe for your screen coating. HP warns that several solvents can permanently damage an LCD, while Lenovo’s guidance illustrates that cleaning methods may depend on the computer and its instructions. What to do about residue on the casing or keyboard
Check the maker’s care guidance for the specific model and surface material. A method allowed for a display may not be suitable for a keyboard or casing, and instructions differ among manufacturers. Avoid soaking keys, seams, ports, or other openings. Microsoft’s Surface cleaning instructions, for example, are specific to Surface devices.

When white residue may need repair support
If the material appears to be inside the laptop, if a spill came before it, or if the device has developed new problems, do not try to clean internal components yourself as a routine surface-care step. Liquid intrusion can leave dried residue and damage components, but that possibility does not identify the material on a particular laptop. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair service. Choose a cleaning method by surface and symptoms
