Choose Essential if you mainly need console multiplayer and a smaller library, Premium if you want more games and can wait up to a year for most new Xbox-published releases, Ultimate if you play on console and/or PC and want the largest catalog, day-one releases and several partner benefits, or PC Game Pass if you play only on Windows PC and want day-one games without paying for console features.
The right choice depends on four things: where you play, whether day-one access matters, how much cloud gaming you use, and whether you would otherwise pay for included benefits such as EA Play, Fortnite Crew or Ubisoft+ Classics. The prices and catalog figures below are Xbox’s U.S. plan-picker information as of October 2026 unless a different date or region is stated.

Plan comparison at a glance
Xbox currently presents four plans in its U.S. picker: Essential, Premium, Ultimate and PC Game Pass. The game totals are advertised catalog sizes, not permanent guarantees. Xbox says games, features, availability and supported platforms can change by time, region and plan.
| Plan | Advertised catalog | Where it fits | Day-one access | Console online multiplayer | Cloud allowance shown for November 2026 | U.S. monthly price notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | 50+ games | Console, PC and supported devices | No | Yes | 5 hours per month | $9.99, announced October 2025; verify locally |
| Premium | 200+ games | Console, PC and supported devices | Eligible Xbox-published games within one year; Call of Duty excluded from this rule | Yes | 10 hours per month | $14.99, announced October 2025; verify locally |
| Ultimate | 500+ games | Console, PC and supported devices | Yes, subject to individual game availability | Yes | 15 hours per month | $22.99 from April 21, 2026; verify locally |
| PC Game Pass | 300+ PC games | Windows PC only | Yes, subject to individual game availability | Not applicable to console | Not included in the plan’s cloud allowance | $13.99 from April 21, 2026; verify locally |
All four figures and feature descriptions are Xbox’s current advertised claims. A subscription grants access only while it is active and while a title remains in the library; it is not a purchase of the game.
#1 Best Overall
- THE PERFECT GAMING GIFT — Buy an XBOX Gift Card for yourself or a friend and let them choose the games, add‑ons, subscriptions, and accessories they want most.
- USE FOR GAMES & CONTENT — Redeem for thousands of digital XBOX games, from backward compatible classics to the latest new releases, plus DLC and in‑game currency.
- GAME PASS READY — Apply your balance toward XBOX Game Pass Ultimate to play new titles on day one* and access a library of hundreds of high‑quality console games.
- PRE‑ORDER & PRE‑INSTALL GAMES — Use your balance to pre‑order and pre‑download upcoming titles so you’re ready to play the moment they launch.
- NO FEES OR EXPIRATION — XBOX Gift Cards never expire and have no service fees, so your balance is ready whenever you are.
Start with the device you actually use
Xbox console only
Console players should first decide whether online multiplayer is essential. Essential, Premium and Ultimate include online console multiplayer. Essential is the lowest-cost route if your priority is playing an existing selection online and you do not need new releases on their launch day. Premium adds a substantially larger advertised catalog and a stated release window for eligible Xbox-published games. Ultimate is the option for players who want the broadest advertised library and day-one access.
Windows PC only
PC Game Pass is the cleanest fit when you do not own or use an Xbox console. It advertises 300+ PC games, day-one releases, EA Play and in-game benefits. It does not list cloud gaming as an included feature, and Xbox’s cloud-limit footnote explicitly excludes PC Game Pass from the subscription cloud allowances. Paying for Ultimate instead makes sense only if you also need its wider device support, console multiplayer or partner benefits.
Both console and PC
Ultimate is the most complete single-plan option for people who switch between Xbox and PC. Essential and Premium also state support for console, PC and supported devices, but they do not provide Ultimate’s day-one promise. Compare the games you actually play rather than assuming the biggest number is automatically better: a 500-plus-game catalog has little extra value if your regular titles are already in a smaller tier or are purchased separately.

Cloud play can make a plan useful on supported devices without installing every game, but the monthly allowance becomes important in November 2026. Treat cloud hours as a limited feature rather than unlimited access, and check whether the device and game are supported in your market before subscribing.
Essential: the economical multiplayer plan
Essential advertises 50+ games and includes access on console, PC and supported devices, online console multiplayer, in-game benefits and rewards. It does not include day-one releases. Xbox’s October 2025 announcement put the U.S. price at $9.99 per month; use the current local picker for the amount charged in your market.
This plan suits a console player who already buys or owns particular new games, wants multiplayer access, and would be satisfied with a modest rotating selection. It can also work for a household that wants basic benefits and occasional cloud sessions but does not expect to stream for many hours every month.
Rank #2
- THE PERFECT GAMING GIFT — Buy an XBOX Gift Card for yourself or a friend and let them choose the games, add‑ons, subscriptions, and accessories they want most.
- USE FOR GAMES & CONTENT — Redeem for thousands of digital XBOX games, from backward compatible classics to the latest new releases, plus DLC and in‑game currency.

Choose Essential when
- Your main reason for subscribing is online console multiplayer.
- You are comfortable waiting for games to enter the catalog, or you purchase launch titles separately.
- The 50-plus advertised selection contains enough games for your secondary or casual play.
- You will use only a small amount of cloud gaming after the November 2026 limits begin.
Essential is a poor fit when a specific new release is the reason you are subscribing. Its lack of day-one access means the launch-day value proposition does not apply.
Premium: more games without a day-one guarantee
Premium advertises 200+ games across console, PC and supported devices, online console multiplayer, in-game benefits and rewards. Xbox says new Xbox-published games arrive within one year, but the rule specifically excludes Call of Duty titles. The U.S. price announced in October 2025 was $14.99 per month, subject to confirmation in your local picker.
Premium is the middle ground for players who want a much larger catalog than Essential provides and can wait for eligible first-party releases. “Within one year” is a timing promise, not a fixed launch date: it does not mean every game arrives exactly 12 months later, and it does not apply to every publisher or series.
Choose Premium when
- You play on both console and PC but do not require launch-day access.
- You want a 200-plus-game advertised library at a lower price than Ultimate.
- You are willing to buy or otherwise play around titles that are not covered by the one-year Xbox-published window.
- You use cloud gaming occasionally and expect the 10-hour monthly allowance shown for November 2026 to be sufficient.
Premium is not a substitute for Ultimate when your schedule revolves around day-one releases, or when you value the partner subscriptions bundled with Ultimate.
Ultimate: the broadest bundle for multi-platform players
Ultimate advertises 500+ games, day-one games, console and PC access, online console multiplayer and supported-device play. It also includes EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, in-game benefits and rewards. Xbox lists the U.S. monthly price as $22.99 beginning April 21, 2026; regional prices can differ.
The extras matter only if you would use them. EA Play can be valuable to someone who regularly plays its included library, while Fortnite Crew or Ubisoft+ Classics may have little value to a player who never uses those services. Do not add their retail prices to your calculation unless you would genuinely pay for them separately.
Rank #3
- THE PERFECT GAMING GIFT — Buy an XBOX Gift Card for yourself or a friend and let them choose the games, add‑ons, subscriptions, and accessories they want most.
- USE FOR GAMES & CONTENT — Redeem for thousands of digital XBOX games, from backward compatible classics to the latest new releases, plus DLC and in‑game currency.

- NO FEES OR EXPIRATION — XBOX Gift Cards never expire and have no service fees, so your balance is ready whenever you are.
Choose Ultimate when
- You want one subscription that covers Xbox and PC.
- Playing new Game Pass releases on day one is a major reason to subscribe.
- You stream often enough for the 15-hour monthly allowance shown for November 2026 to matter.
- You will use at least one of EA Play, Fortnite Crew or Ubisoft+ Classics.
- You want the largest advertised catalog and are comfortable paying the highest monthly price among the four plans.
Ultimate is not automatically the best value for a single-platform player. A PC-only user may receive the day-one and EA Play features through PC Game Pass for less, while a console player who does not care about new releases may spend less with Essential or Premium.
PC Game Pass: the focused PC choice
PC Game Pass advertises 300+ PC games, day-one releases, EA Play and in-game benefits. Xbox lists it at $13.99 per month in the United States from April 21, 2026, with prices varying by region. The plan is PC-only; it does not provide the console multiplayer entitlement that matters to Xbox-console owners.
Xbox’s current plan information does not include cloud gaming in PC Game Pass. The cloud footnote states that the monthly cloud limits apply to Essential, Premium and Ultimate, not PC Game Pass. If streaming is a core requirement, compare Ultimate’s supported-device access and allowance instead of assuming the PC catalog includes cloud play.
Choose PC Game Pass when
- You play exclusively on a Windows PC.
- You want day-one PC releases without paying for console features.
- You will use EA Play and the included in-game benefits.
- You install games locally and do not need a subscription cloud allowance.
PC Game Pass is usually the clearest answer to “Which Game Pass do I need for PC?” when the player has no Xbox console and does not need cloud gaming. Ultimate becomes relevant when the same account is also used on console or when its additional benefits justify the higher cost.
Day-one releases and the Call of Duty exception
Day-one access separates the tiers more sharply than the catalog counts. Ultimate and PC Game Pass advertise day-one games. Essential does not. Premium promises eligible Xbox-published games within one year, rather than at launch.
There is an important exception for Call of Duty. Xbox says future Call of Duty titles will not arrive in Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch; new entries are expected during the following holiday season, approximately a year later. Existing Call of Duty games already in the library remain available while they continue to be listed. Any older statement that every new Call of Duty launches in Game Pass is outdated.

Before subscribing for a particular release, check that game’s listing and platform availability. “Day one” describes the plan’s advertised timing, not a guarantee that every game appears on every device or in every market.

Cloud gaming limits beginning November 2026
Xbox announced a change beginning in November 2026. The current plan page shows these monthly allowances:
| Plan | Cloud hours per month | What the allowance means |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | 5 | Limited monthly streaming time |
| Premium | 10 | Double Essential’s shown allowance |
| Ultimate | 15 | The largest subscription allowance shown |
| PC Game Pass | Not included | No subscription cloud allowance listed |
Xbox says hours, purchase options and cloud features may vary by market, with further details to follow before implementation. Recheck the plan page after the November change, especially if you expect to buy extra hours or rely on cloud play as your primary way to game. Team Xbox estimated that 4% of Game Pass subscribers would be affected by the upcoming cloud-hour change; that is a publisher-reported estimate, not an independent measurement.
For a player who streams only during travel or to test a game, five or ten hours may be adequate. Someone replacing a console or gaming PC with streaming should calculate sessions carefully: a two-hour evening uses 40% of Essential’s displayed allowance and 20% of Premium’s. The allowance resets monthly rather than representing a permanent bank of hours.

The U.S. figures are not worldwide prices. Essential’s $9.99 and Premium’s $14.99 were published with Xbox’s October 2025 plan changes. Xbox later stated that, effective April 21, 2026, Ultimate became $22.99 per month and PC Game Pass became $13.99 per month in the United States. The April update announced reductions for Ultimate and PC Game Pass only; it did not establish that Essential or Premium have the same prices in every market.

Best Value
- XBOX GIFT CARD: Buy full digital game downloads, game add-ons, in-game currency, memberships, devices, apps, movies, TV shows, and more.
- DIGITAL GAMES: Choose from hundreds of games, from AAA to indie options. Start playing the moment your most anticipated game is available when you pre-order and pre-download it.
- GAME AD-ONS: Extend the experience of your favorite games with add-ons and in-game currency.

- PERFECT GIFT: Great as a gift for a friend or yourself. Xbox Gift Cards are easy to use, never expire, and give the freedom to pick the gift they want. Enjoy more ways to play without a credit card attached to your Microsoft account.
Catalog size is not the same as catalog value
The advertised tiers are 50-plus, 200-plus, 500-plus and 300-plus games for Essential, Premium, Ultimate and PC Game Pass respectively. These are useful signals about breadth, but they are not inventory guarantees. Xbox states that titles, game counts, features and availability vary over time, by region, plan and platform.
Make a short list of the games you would actually play, then check each title’s current plan, platform and region listing. A smaller tier can be better value when it contains your regular games and the features you need. Conversely, a large catalog can justify Ultimate for a player who samples many genres and would otherwise buy several games each month.
Remember the access condition: you can play a subscription title only while the subscription is active and while Xbox keeps that title in the library. If a game leaves, continued access requires another entitlement, such as a purchase or a different subscription that includes it.

Value the included benefits realistically
Ultimate includes EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics; PC Game Pass includes EA Play. These inclusions are part of the plans, but they are not cash rebates. Count a benefit only when you expect to use it. A player who never opens those libraries should compare plans using games, multiplayer, day-one timing and cloud hours alone.
In-game benefits and rewards also vary by offer and can change. Check the current plan description and the individual benefit’s terms rather than assuming every promotion is permanent or available in every country.
A practical decision process
- Mark your platforms. Select console, PC or both. Eliminate PC Game Pass if you need console multiplayer; eliminate console-focused plans if you never use an Xbox and do not need their supported-device features.
- Decide whether launch day matters. Choose Ultimate or PC Game Pass for advertised day-one access. Choose Essential or Premium only if waiting or buying selected launches separately is acceptable.
- Check Call of Duty expectations. Future entries are excluded from the launch-day rule and are expected around the following holiday season, so do not upgrade solely for a launch that the current policy does not cover.
- Estimate cloud use. Compare your monthly streaming hours with the November 2026 allowances: 5, 10 or 15 hours. If you need unlimited or substantially more time, do not assume the subscription caps will meet that need; market-specific purchase options may change.
- Verify the games. Look up the exact titles, platform versions and current regional availability in the Xbox catalog.
- Value partner benefits. Add weight to Ultimate or PC Game Pass only for benefits you would actually use.
- Confirm the recurring local price. The checkout total in your country takes precedence over historical U.S. announcement prices.
- Review after a month. If the catalog, release timing or cloud allowance does not match your habits, move to a lower or different tier at the next opportunity instead of paying for unused features.
Do you need an Xbox controller?
No controller is required to subscribe. Console players already need a compatible controller to play Xbox console games, while PC players can use keyboard and mouse or an existing compatible controller. An Xbox Wireless Controller is an optional accessory with compatibility categories that include Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC; it is most relevant when choosing a console-oriented plan and lacking an input device. It does not add Game Pass benefits or change which plan you need.
Bottom-line recommendations by habit
| Your habit | Best starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Console multiplayer, low monthly spend, no day-one need | Essential | Includes online console multiplayer and a smaller catalog at the lowest announced U.S. price |
| Console and PC, broad library, willing to wait | Premium | 200+ advertised games and eligible Xbox-published releases within one year |
| Console and/or PC, day-one releases and partner benefits | Ultimate | 500+ advertised games, day-one access, multiplayer and three partner inclusions |
| PC only, day-one games, no cloud requirement | PC Game Pass | 300+ PC games, day-one access and EA Play without console-plan features |
| Frequent cloud play across supported devices | Ultimate, subject to the cap | Largest displayed allowance at 15 hours per month from November 2026; verify market rules |
The best plan is the one whose specific features you will use every month. Start with the device, then choose the release timing, cloud allowance and benefits that match your actual sessions—not the largest number printed on the plan card.
