On a Windows 11 dual-screen laptop, start with Settings > System > Power & battery: choose Best power efficiency while on battery, enable Energy saver, and shorten the on-battery screen-off and sleep timers. Then lower the brightness and, where Windows offers the control, the refresh rate of each display. These changes can reduce power use, but the improvement depends on your laptop and workload; there is no reliable universal battery-hours or percentage gain.
Start with Windows power settings
Choose Best power efficiency on battery
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode and select Best power efficiency when running on battery. Windows may offer Balanced and Best performance as alternatives. Best power efficiency can limit background activity, so switch to Balanced if a task becomes noticeably slow. Menu names and availability vary by device and Windows version. Turn on Energy saver
In Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy saver, turn it on when needed or configure it to switch on automatically at a battery threshold you choose. If the option to lower screen brightness while using Energy saver appears, enable it. Energy saver can dim the screen and limit background processes; the exact controls depend on the Windows build and device. Microsoft’s battery-saving tips explain these options.
Shorten screen-off and sleep times
Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts; some Windows builds label this page Screen and sleep. Choose shorter values for the on-battery screen-off and sleep settings. Pick intervals that fit your work: a display that turns off too quickly can interrupt reading or presentations, while a shorter idle timeout saves power when you step away.

Adjust the displays without sacrificing usability
Lower brightness on both panels
Open Settings > System > Display > Brightness and reduce brightness to a comfortable level. On a dual-screen laptop, check each built-in panel rather than assuming one brightness control adjusts both equally. Windows and the laptop’s hardware may expose different controls for the two screens. Some display options appear only on supported devices.
Use a lower supported refresh rate
Go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. Select a display, then choose a lower refresh rate from the rates Windows lists for it. Repeat for the other panel if it is selectable. Microsoft notes that a higher refresh rate provides smoother motion but uses more power; lowering it makes scrolling and animation less fluid. Microsoft’s refresh-rate instructions cover the setting.

If Windows offers Dynamic Refresh Rate, try it for everyday browsing and office work. It requires compatible hardware and may not suit a game or other activity that benefits from consistently high refresh. Turn it off if it causes an unwanted change in motion or responsiveness.

Some laptops offer content-adaptive brightness or presence-sensor options. These are hardware-dependent, and adaptive brightness may be distracting or unsuitable for color-sensitive work. Microsoft’s brightness and color guidance describes supported display controls. Dark mode is available at Settings > Personalization > Colors > Choose your mode; its power benefit is most relevant to OLED displays, not all panel types.

Reduce power use from apps and unused features
Review battery use and graphics preferences
In Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage, review which apps use substantial power, including in the background. Where Windows provides a background-activity control, limit apps that do not need to keep working when you are away.
For supported apps, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the app, open its options, and choose Power saving if offered. This can reduce graphics power use, but may slow graphics-heavy work. Not every app or PC exposes the same choices.

Switch off radios you are not using
Open Quick Settings and turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when you do not need them. Do not disable a connection that an active task or peripheral depends on.
Can you turn off one of the two screens?
Windows’ general multi-display choices are available with Windows key + P: PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend, and Second screen only. Choose a mode only if the display you want is listed and the laptop behaves as expected. These choices do not guarantee that every laptop exposes its two built-in panels as independently switchable Windows displays; that depends on how the manufacturer’s hardware and software present them. What to expect from these changes
Brightness, refresh rate, and using fewer active displays affect what you see directly. Energy saver, power mode, and app graphics preferences can affect performance or background work. Test the settings against your normal mix of tasks rather than expecting a specific runtime increase: Microsoft’s cited guidance does not establish a universal percentage or number of extra hours, and results depend on the laptop, its displays, and how it is used.
For a quick first pass, change the power mode and idle timeouts, enable Energy saver, then tune brightness and refresh rate one display at a time. Keep the choices that extend unplugged use without making your everyday work uncomfortable or too slow.
