Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallAfter a Windows upgrade, verify five things before assuming the computer is ready: Windows Update and restart status, the files and backups you depend on, privacy and app permissions, essential programs and peripherals, and the defaults, layout, display, sound, and accessibility settings that make the PC usable. A standard in-place Windows 11 installation is designed to keep personal files, apps, and Windows settings, but the result depends on the installation method and choices you made. Treat the checks below as verification, not as proof that every upgrade resets the same controls.
What an upgrade is supposed to preserve
Microsoft’s default in-place Windows 11 setup can keep personal files, installed apps, and Windows settings. That is the expected behavior, not a guarantee for every installation: a clean installation, a changed edition, a reset, or a different choice during setup can produce a different result. Microsoft’s installation overview explains the available approaches at Ways to install Windows 11, while its upgrade FAQ describes what an upgrade can retain at Upgrade to Windows 11: FAQ.

Do not start by changing every setting. First establish what actually changed, then correct only the items that are missing, disabled, or unsuitable for your use. Keep the old computer or a separate backup untouched until you have opened the files and tested the hardware you need.

Open Settings > Windows Update. Let the page finish checking, install available updates, and restart if Windows presents a restart request. Microsoft’s preparation guidance uses Windows Update to determine whether an upgrade is ready for a particular device; after the upgrade, the same page is the practical place to confirm that the current installation has no pending action (Getting ready for the Windows 11 upgrade).

A restart can complete driver installation and apply changes that are not active immediately after setup. If the page continues to show a pending restart, restart before diagnosing a camera, audio, printer, or application problem. Record any error code or failed update name rather than repeatedly rebooting without a clue.
- Check the update page for a pending restart, an installation failure, or a message that the device is up to date.
- After restarting, return to the page once more so you are checking the state of the finished installation, not the state immediately after setup.
- If a work or school administrator controls updates, expect the available choices and timing to differ from a personal PC.
2. Open important files and verify the backup you actually rely on
Do not infer that a successful upgrade migrated every file. Open representative files from the folders and locations you use every day: documents, photographs, project folders, downloaded material, and any data stored outside the usual user profile. Check both the file contents and the path, because a file that exists in a different location may still break an application that expects the original path.
Microsoft recommends backing up before installing a new Windows version. Its upgrade FAQ discusses OneDrive synchronization and an external backup device as possible approaches; neither is a universal requirement, and an additional copy may be unnecessary for files that are already synced and recoverable through OneDrive (Upgrade to Windows 11: FAQ).
Check OneDrive folder backup and restoreability
Windows Backup can back up selected folders such as Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Music to OneDrive. Open Settings > Accounts > Windows backup and inspect the choices shown on that PC. Microsoft notes that the controls and storage conditions depend on the account and configuration; an option being absent does not prove that files are missing or that synchronization is broken (Back up and restore with Windows Backup).
Sign in to the same account used for the backup, then test recovery of a file you can afford to copy. A cloud icon or a folder name alone is not a restore test: confirm that the file opens and that recent changes are present.

Check a local backup when you keep one
If your protection plan uses an external hard drive or another external backup device, connect it and verify that the backup completed before the upgrade and contains the folders you need. Microsoft identifies an external device as one possible backup destination; it does not prescribe a capacity, model, price, or mandatory use of removable storage. Keep the backup disconnected when it is not being updated if that is part of your normal protection practice.
Review which preferences can be synchronized
The Windows Backup settings catalog lists preferences that may be included, such as personalization choices and selections involving Start, the taskbar, File Explorer, Wi-Fi profiles, and credentials. The catalog is a description of available categories, not a promise that every category is enabled on every account or Windows release. Inspect the switches displayed under Settings > Accounts > Windows backup instead of assuming all settings followed you (Windows Backup Settings Catalog).
3. Review privacy and app permissions
In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security. In Windows 10, the corresponding area is Settings > Privacy. Work through the capabilities that matter to your apps, including Location, Camera, Microphone, Contacts, and Calendar. For each capability, check the device-wide permission and the individual app switches, then turn access on only for apps that need it. Microsoft’s permission explanations and paths are in Windows privacy settings that apps use.
Do not mistake an empty app list for a complete block
Windows’ per-app lists do not necessarily show every program. Microsoft specifically notes that desktop applications may not appear there and may have their own permission controls. A video-conferencing, recording, imaging, or communications program can therefore continue to use a camera or microphone through its own settings even when it is absent from the Windows list. Open the program’s privacy, audio, video, or account settings and check the selected devices and permissions as well.
Check general privacy choices using the labels on your release
Review the general privacy controls presented on the device, including advertising ID, app launch tracking, and suggested content where those options are available. Microsoft says that on recent Windows 11 versions the former General privacy page is being replaced by Recommendations & offers. Follow the label visible in your build rather than looking for an older name that may no longer exist (General privacy settings in Windows).

4. Test the programs and accessories you cannot do without
Launch the applications that support work, school, communication, media, and specialized tasks. Open a real file, sign in if required, print or export a sample, and use the functions that matter rather than stopping when the program merely opens. Microsoft expects most Windows 10 software and accessories to work with Windows 11, but it directs users to the software publisher or hardware manufacturer for specific compatibility information (Upgrade to Windows 11: FAQ).

Connect and test each essential peripheral: printer, scanner, webcam, microphone, speakers or headset, external display, storage device, smart-card reader, and any specialist controller. For a printer or scanner, perform an actual scan or test print. For a camera and microphone, use the application’s device preview and check that the expected device—not a built-in or virtual alternative—is selected.
When an older application stops working
A program that worked on the previous Windows version can develop a compatibility problem after the version change. Microsoft provides guidance for making older programs compatible with the latest Windows release at Make older apps or programs compatible with the latest version of Windows. Follow the publisher’s supported procedure first. Update or reinstall only when the publisher supports the Windows version you now use; indiscriminately replacing an application can remove plug-ins, local profiles, or settings you still need.
Check manufacturer support for hardware
If a device is missing, unstable, or limited to a generic driver, look up the model with its manufacturer and confirm Windows 11 support. A driver supplied for an earlier Windows release may not provide the same features. For business-managed equipment, the correct driver or utility may need to come from your organization’s approved software source rather than a public download.
5. Verify default apps and file associations
Open Settings > Apps > Default apps and inspect the applications assigned to the activities you perform most often. Check web links, email, photographs, video, PDF files, and the document formats used by your work. You can also select a file type or link type and confirm which application Windows will use.

This is a verification step, not a claim that upgrades always change defaults. If the correct program is still selected, leave it alone. If a format opens in an unexpected program, choose the intended application in the Default apps page and test by opening a real file or link.
6. Compare the everyday layout, display, sound, and accessibility setup
Settings that look minor can determine whether the upgraded PC is usable. Compare the current setup with the arrangement you had before the upgrade:
- Display: resolution, scaling, orientation, HDR where applicable, night-light behavior, and the order and primary status of multiple monitors.
- Start and taskbar: pinned applications, taskbar alignment and visibility, search behavior, notification-area icons, and the folders or shortcuts you use.
- Notifications: which applications may interrupt you, quiet hours or focus choices, and notification previews on the lock screen.
- Sound: default output and input devices, per-application volume, microphone level, spatial-audio choices, and whether a monitor has unexpectedly become the output.
- Input and accessibility: keyboard layout, text size, contrast, magnification, Narrator, captions, voice access, pointer size, and filter or sticky-key behavior.
- File Explorer: navigation-pane choices, hidden-item visibility, known-folder locations, and the view settings that help you find files.
Windows Backup can represent several personalization, Start, taskbar, and File Explorer preferences, but Microsoft’s catalog does not establish that every upgrade changes them or that every preference is restored in every account configuration (Windows Backup Settings Catalog). Compare the controls with your own baseline and adjust only what is wrong.

The camera or microphone is not available
- Return to Settings > Privacy & security and check the device-wide and app-specific camera or microphone permissions.
- Open the affected desktop application’s own privacy or device settings, because desktop apps may not appear in Windows’ per-app list.
- Confirm that the application is using the intended camera or microphone and that another program is not occupying it.
- Restart after Windows Update has completed, then test again.
- If the device still fails, check the hardware manufacturer’s Windows compatibility and driver guidance.
A file or folder appears to be missing
- Search the expected user profile and known folders, then check whether the file was moved into a OneDrive-backed location.
- Sign in to the account that owns the synchronization and verify that the file opens from the cloud copy.
- Connect the external backup device, if you use one, and confirm whether the file exists in the pre-upgrade backup.
- Do not delete or overwrite the old copy until you have identified which version is current and recoverable.
An application opens but behaves differently
Test the specific feature that fails, capture any error text, and check the publisher’s compatibility notes for the Windows version. If the problem is limited to one application, avoid changing unrelated Windows privacy or display settings; a supported update, repair, or reinstall from the publisher is more appropriate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe desktop looks unfamiliar
Check display scaling and monitor arrangement first, then Start, taskbar, notifications, sound output, and accessibility controls. A changed scaling value can make icons and text appear to have moved even when the files and applications are intact.

8. Decide whether rolling back is still appropriate
Microsoft’s upgrade FAQ says an upgraded Windows 10 device has 10 days to move back while keeping the migrated files and data. After that period, returning to Windows 10 requires a manual backup followed by a clean installation. Before choosing either path, verify the current Microsoft instructions, preserve your important files, and make sure the reason for leaving Windows 11 cannot be solved by a driver, application update, permission change, or restored preference (Upgrade to Windows 11: FAQ).
There is an additional support consideration in 2026: Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. A rollback therefore leaves the PC on an operating system outside that free support window; weigh application or hardware compatibility against that security and maintenance position before proceeding.
A practical order for the first session
If you want one sequence rather than a settings tour, use this order and stop when each item has a real-world result:
- Open Windows Update, install outstanding updates, and restart when requested.
- Open several important files from their normal locations and confirm that recent content is present.
- Check Windows Backup and the backup destination you actually use; test recovery of at least one file.
- Review camera, microphone, location, contacts, calendar, and other permissions relevant to your applications.
- Launch essential software and perform a representative task in each program.
- Connect critical accessories and perform an operation such as printing, scanning, recording, or displaying on an external monitor.
- Confirm default apps for the links and file types you use daily.
- Restore the display, monitor, Start, taskbar, notification, sound, keyboard, and accessibility arrangement you depend on.
- Only after these checks decide whether a compatibility issue justifies contacting a publisher, manufacturer, administrator, or Microsoft support.
The labels, backup choices, and available permissions can vary by Windows release, account, storage, and organization policy. Use the controls shown on the installed PC, and keep a recoverable backup before making a clean installation or other irreversible change.
