Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOn a Windows 11 Arm PC with a Snapdragon X processor, the relevant controls are per-app Prism emulation settings. Open the affected program’s executable Properties, choose Compatibility, then under Windows on Arm select Change emulation settings. Leave the profile at Default first. If the app still fails, test a less restrictive individual option or move to Safe, Strict or Very strict, changing one item at a time and retesting the same operation.
These controls can improve compatibility for some emulated x86 or x64 applications, but they are troubleshooting tools rather than guaranteed fixes. Microsoft warns that changing emulation settings can reduce performance and may cause an application to crash or stop launching. A native Arm64 build remains the preferred solution when the publisher offers one.

First determine whether emulation is the problem
Snapdragon X PCs run Windows 11 on Arm64 hardware. An application may be compiled natively for Arm64, or it may be an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) Windows program translated by Microsoft’s Prism emulator. Prism translates blocks of x86 instructions into Arm64 instructions and caches the translated code for later launches.

If the program itself crashes, renders incorrectly, reports an unsupported CPU feature or fails during a calculation, an emulation setting may help. If setup requires a kernel-mode driver, a low-level filter, hardware dongle driver or similar component, Prism settings are not a substitute for an Arm64 driver. Prism handles user-mode application code; kernel-mode components must be compiled for Arm64.

Check for a native Arm64 build
Visit the application publisher’s download or support page and look for labels such as Arm64, ARM64 or Windows on Arm. Install that build if it supports the features you need. Native Arm software avoids translation overhead and is Microsoft’s preferred performance path. If the publisher provides only x86 or x64 binaries, continue with Prism troubleshooting.
Update before tuning
Install current Windows updates and the latest version of the app before experimenting. A vendor may have corrected an Arm, Prism or CPU-feature issue in a newer release, and a setting that was useful for an old build can be unnecessary or harmful after an update.
Open the per-app emulation controls
- Locate the application’s actual executable file. A shortcut can be used to reach it: right-click the shortcut, choose Properties, and use Open File Location if that option is available.
- Right-click the executable and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- In the Windows on Arm section, select Change emulation settings.
- Note or photograph the existing choices before changing anything. These settings apply to that executable, so a launcher and the program it starts may have separate profiles.
The dialog exposes four presets. Start with Default, which is designed to balance Prism’s compatibility behavior and performance. Safe, Strict and Very strict progressively enable additional compatibility behavior. A stricter profile can solve a particular defect, but it can also make the application slower or introduce a new launch failure.

| Profile | What it means | When to try it | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Default | Normal Prism behavior with Microsoft’s performance and compatibility balance | Always the starting point | May not accommodate unusual legacy code |
| Safe | Enables a limited set of additional compatibility behaviors | When Default reproduces a problem and you want a small step | Some performance loss is possible |
| Strict | Enables more compatibility-oriented emulation behavior | When Safe does not resolve the same reproducible fault | Greater performance cost and possible instability |
| Very strict | Uses the most compatibility-focused preset | As a last preset experiment, preferably with vendor guidance | Highest likelihood of slower execution or a launch failure |
What each advanced setting changes
The advanced controls are more useful when you can connect one to a symptom or to a recommendation from the application vendor. Do not enable every option simply because the app is unstable; that removes your ability to identify the change that helped and may impose several unnecessary slowdowns.

Multi-core operation
Fast is the default. Strict and Very strict add memory barriers to synchronize memory accesses between threads running in emulation, which can slow a multithreaded application. Force single-core runs all of the app’s threads on one processor core, avoiding the need for that cross-core synchronization. Try it only when the failure appears related to multithreading, timing or corrupted shared state; CPU-heavy work can become substantially slower.
Hide x64 emulation capability
This option makes an x86 application see x64 code as unavailable. It reproduces the support behavior associated with Windows 10 on Arm and can help software that chooses an incompatible x64 code path after detecting x64 emulation. It is relevant to 32-bit x86 programs and should not be used as a general performance switch.
Hide newer emulated CPU features
On Windows 11 version 24H2 and newer, Prism can hide newer features such as AVX, AVX2, BMI, FMA and F16C from an application. Some older software incorrectly assumes that a detected feature is available or stable, then crashes when it executes that code. Hiding the features can force a more conservative path.
For 32-bit x86 applications, the corresponding control can instead expose these newer features. Prism does not expose them to those apps by default. Only choose the exposure option when the program requires a feature and its documentation or support team identifies that requirement; unsupported feature assumptions can make a crash worse.

Disable application cache
Prism normally reuses cached translated code. Disable application cache makes Windows recompile the application’s code at run time instead. This can help when cached translations are stale or corrupted after an update, but every launch or code path that needs translation may take longer. If you test it, allow the same workload to complete before judging the result rather than comparing only startup time.
Disable hybrid execution mode
This x86-only option avoids hybrid portable-executable files that contain native Arm64 code alongside x86-compatible code. A hybrid binary can select a path that is faulty for a particular release. Disabling hybrid execution is a targeted compatibility test, not a recommendation for every x86 application.
Additional lightweight emulation protections
This control tells Prism to ignore volatile metadata in a binary. It is intended for applications whose metadata changes in a way that interferes with emulation. Because the setting changes how the executable is interpreted, use it only for a repeatable issue and restore it if behavior becomes less reliable.

Strict self-modifying code support
Some legacy programs generate or rewrite executable code while running. Strict self-modifying-code support handles that behavior more fully. Microsoft notes that it significantly reduces performance for code that uses this technique, so reserve it for an application that exhibits a self-modifying-code failure or for a vendor-directed workaround.

Disable RWX page performance optimization
Readable, writable and executable memory pages are subject to a Prism optimization. Disabling that optimization can help software that is incompatible with the optimized handling of RWX pages. It may reduce performance for code that allocates or executes such pages.
Disable floating-point optimization
Prism can use a 64-bit approximation for some floating-point operations. Disabling the optimization uses full 80-bit x87 precision instead. This can matter to older engineering, scientific or financial software that depends on extended precision, but it carries a performance cost and should be selected only when numerical behavior is the specific symptom.
A controlled troubleshooting method
- Describe the failure precisely. Record the executable name, Windows version, app version and the exact action that fails: launch, opening a file, printing, rendering, calculation or a plug-in.
- Separate user-mode and driver failures. If the error appears when a kernel driver, hardware interface or system filter loads, look for an Arm64 driver from the vendor. Prism cannot translate a kernel-mode driver.
- Start at Default. If the app is already on a stricter profile, return it to Default and reproduce the issue once so you have a baseline.
- Choose one plausible change. For example, test hidden CPU features for a CPU-feature error, single-core operation for a threading fault, or a disabled cache after an update-related translation problem.
- Retest the identical task. Use the same file, project or menu sequence. Record whether the app launches, whether the fault changed and any visible performance impact.
- Escalate gradually. If the individual change does not help, revert it and try Safe, then Strict, keeping a written record. Very strict is a final preset experiment, not a default configuration.
- Restore a worsening change. If the program becomes slower, crashes or stops launching, reopen the executable’s Properties dialog and restore the previous setting. If the app cannot launch, change the setting before starting it again; do not stack more toggles on a failed profile.
- Contact the publisher with useful evidence. Provide the app version, Windows 11 build, Snapdragon X model, whether a native Arm64 build exists, the exact Prism setting tested and the before-and-after symptom.
Native Arm versus emulated x86 or x64
| Characteristic | Native Arm64 application | Emulated x86/x64 application |
|---|---|---|
| Code execution | Runs directly as Arm64 instructions | Prism translates x86 instructions to Arm64 and caches translations |
| Performance path | Preferred by Microsoft when available | Depends on the app, workload and emulation behavior |
| Per-app Prism controls | Generally not the remedy for native code | Available through the executable’s Compatibility properties |
| Driver requirement | Still requires compatible Arm64 kernel drivers when hardware or filters are involved | Prism does not emulate a non-Arm64 kernel driver |
| Compatibility tuning | Use the app’s own settings and vendor updates | Use Default first, then targeted emulation experiments |
Windows 11 24H2 includes Prism, and Microsoft notes that some Prism performance features require Snapdragon X-series hardware. Prism is available on supported Windows 11 Arm devices more broadly, so the presence of the dialog does not by itself guarantee identical performance across PC models.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommon mistakes and recovery
Changing every option at once
When ten switches change together, you cannot tell which one addressed the fault. Return to the saved baseline and test one setting or one preset at a time.
Best Value
Assuming stricter always means better
Strict modes add synchronization and compatibility behavior, not universal fixes. They can lower throughput, increase launch time or expose a new incompatibility. Keep the least restrictive profile that solves the actual task.
Tuning a launcher instead of the failing executable
Game launchers, document managers and plug-in hosts can start a second executable. Apply the setting to the process that fails, and test the launcher separately if it has its own compatibility behavior.
Trying Prism settings for a driver error
An Arm64 application can still fail because a required driver is x64-only, missing or blocked. Obtain a supported Arm64 driver or use a different workflow; changing user-mode emulation settings will not translate that kernel component.
How to choose the setting by symptom
| Observed symptom | First targeted experiment | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Application reports an unsupported AVX, AVX2 or similar feature | Hide newer emulated CPU features | Forces the app to avoid newer feature paths on Windows 11 24H2 or newer |
| Old x86 program selects an x64 path and fails | Hide x64 emulation capability | Makes x64 appear unavailable to the x86 app |
| Failure appears tied to thread timing or shared data | Test stricter multi-core behavior, then Force single-core | Adds synchronization or removes cross-core execution |
| Failure began after an app or Windows update | Disable application cache | Forces fresh translation instead of reusing cached code |
| Numerical results differ in an older calculation program | Disable floating-point optimization | Restores full 80-bit x87 precision |
| Program generates executable code and fails while doing so | Strict self-modifying code support | Provides fuller handling for self-modifying code, with a major performance cost |
This symptom map is a starting point, not a universal ranking. If a vendor supplies a specific Prism recommendation, follow that guidance and verify it against the application version you use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Prism emulation settings apply to every application on the PC?
No. They are configured for an individual executable through that file’s Properties dialog. A launcher, helper process or plug-in host may require its own profile.
Will changing an emulation preset make an x64-only driver work?
No. Prism translates user-mode x86 and x64 application code. Kernel-mode drivers must be compiled for Arm64.
Which preset should remain enabled after troubleshooting?
Keep Default unless a less restrictive targeted change or preset demonstrably fixes the required task. Retain a stricter setting only when the benefit outweighs its measured performance cost.
