Windows does not put every keyboard, mouse, audio, and display control in one panel. Start with the symptom, then check Accessibility for interaction and hearing or vision aids, Bluetooth & devices for ordinary mouse behavior and connected peripherals, and System for display and sound categories. Windows 10 and Windows 11 use different names and paths, so identify your version before following a click-by-click route.
A missed keystroke can be a Filter Keys setting; trouble pressing a shortcut can be Sticky Keys; an invisible pointer can be a pointer-visibility setting; and speech that is hard to follow may be helped by captions or mono audio. If a device is absent from Settings altogether, suspect detection or a driver problem before changing preferences.
Find the right Windows settings area
Open Settings with Windows+I. Use the search box when you know what you want—searching for “keyboard,” “mouse,” “captions,” or “display” can be faster than browsing categories. Microsoft’s Settings guide explains the search function and the main Windows categories: Understand and explore Windows Settings.

Keyboard settings that change how typing works
In Windows 11, go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard. Windows 10 places the comparable controls under Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard. The labels below describe the behavior rather than a particular keyboard model.

Sticky Keys: enter combinations one key at a time
Sticky Keys is for commands that normally require simultaneous keys. With it enabled, a command such as Ctrl+S can be entered by pressing Ctrl, releasing it, and then pressing S. This can make shortcuts accessible when holding several keys together is difficult. If shortcuts appear to “stick” or behave unexpectedly, check whether Sticky Keys is enabled before blaming the keyboard.
Filter Keys: ignore very brief or repeated presses
Filter Keys changes keyboard sensitivity. It can ignore a very brief press or repeated keystrokes, which is useful for tremor or accidental repeats. It can also make a healthy keyboard seem unresponsive if the filtering is too aggressive: characters may not register, or a held key may repeat differently. Turn it off temporarily when diagnosing missed input, then adjust it only if the filtering solves a real accessibility need.
Recommended Free Tools
Toggle Keys: hear Caps Lock, Num Lock, and Scroll Lock
Toggle Keys plays a sound when Caps Lock, Num Lock, or Scroll Lock is pressed. It does not change the text or pointer directly; it provides confirmation that a lock state changed. This is useful when the keyboard indicator is hard to see or when a user needs an audible cue.
On-screen keyboard: type with a pointer
The on-screen keyboard displays keys that can be selected with a mouse or another pointing device. It is an alternative input method when a physical keyboard is unavailable or a particular key is difficult to press. Windows also provides the shortcut Windows+Ctrl+O to turn it on.
Other keyboard options
The same Accessibility keyboard page includes options such as underlining access keys and using Print Screen to open screen capture. These are interface and workflow choices, not hardware repairs. If a physical keyboard is completely absent from Windows, check connection, power, and detection rather than changing these preferences.

Mouse, pointer, and Mouse Keys settings
Change the primary button and scrolling
For ordinary mouse behavior in Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse. This is where Microsoft places the primary mouse-button choice and scrolling options. A left-handed user can make the right button primary, and scrolling direction or the amount of content moved can be adjusted according to the controls offered by the installed Windows build.

Pointer trails are not on the main Mouse page. Microsoft places them in Additional mouse settings. Trails can make a moving pointer easier to follow, but they can also look distracting in screen recordings or games.
Make the pointer easier to see
Open Settings > Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch to change pointer size and choose a pointer style or color. This affects visibility, not button assignments or scrolling. Increase the size or select a contrasting color when the pointer disappears against a background; reduce it again if it obscures small interface elements.
Use Mouse Keys when a mouse is difficult to operate
Settings > Accessibility > Mouse > Mouse keys lets the numeric keypad move the pointer. It is separate from the usual mouse settings and does not require a special mouse. Microsoft documents this numeric-keypad layout:

Mouse Keys also provides speed controls. If the pointer crawls or moves too quickly, adjust its speed on the Mouse Keys page rather than changing the physical mouse’s settings. The feature and its directions are described in Use Mouse keys to move the mouse pointer.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAudio and hearing-related settings
Windows’ audio accessibility controls change how sound is delivered or represented. They are not the same as selecting an output device or fixing a missing driver.
Mono audio: combine stereo channels
Mono audio combines stereo sound into one channel. It can help someone listening with one headphone or one functioning earbud hear content that was mixed across left and right channels. It changes the presentation for all applicable audio, so switch it off when you need normal stereo separation.
Flash the screen for audio notifications
Flash my screen during audio notifications supplies a visual cue instead of relying only on a sound. Windows can flash the active window’s title bar, the active window, or the full screen. Choose the least disruptive option that is still visible from your normal seating position.

Live captions: read speech as text
Live captions display speech from video as text. Caption styling can be customized, which helps with text size, contrast, or readability. In Windows 11, audio accessibility controls are under Settings > Accessibility > Audio, while caption controls are under Settings > Accessibility > Captions. Microsoft’s hearing guide covers both Windows 10 and Windows 11: Make Windows easier to hear.

If an output device does not appear, or sound controls are unavailable or gray, changing mono audio or captions will not create it. Microsoft identifies a missing, outdated, disabled, or improperly loading audio driver as a possible cause. Treat this as a detection or driver problem: use Microsoft’s Windows 10 and 11 procedure for a missing or undetected audio output device, then return to sound settings after the device is recognized: Fix missing or undetected audio output device in Windows.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Display and visual-accessibility settings
Microsoft’s Settings overview places display settings under System. Which display controls appear depends on the Windows version, graphics hardware, monitor, and laptop features. Brightness, night light, scaling, resolution, color profiles, and refresh rate should therefore be verified on the specific installation rather than assumed from a generic path.
Use vision accessibility options for readability
Accessibility’s vision-related controls address how information is presented:
Best Value
- Color filters alter color presentation for users who have difficulty distinguishing colors.
- Magnifier enlarges screen content; keyboard shortcuts can start or control it.
- Pointer visibility overlaps with the Mouse pointer and touch page, where size, style, and color can be changed.
- Text cursor visibility makes the insertion point easier to locate while typing.
These options change the on-screen experience without replacing a display driver or correcting a physically faulty monitor. Microsoft’s accessibility overview lists vision features, and its shortcut page lists keyboard access: Discover Windows accessibility features and Windows keyboard shortcuts for accessibility.
Windows 10, Windows 11, and Voice Access differences
The same feature can have a different route. Windows 11 generally uses Accessibility; Windows 10 commonly uses Ease of Access. The keyboard and mouse guidance and the hearing guidance apply to both versions, but the visible labels and grouping can change with updates. If a path does not match your screen, press Windows+I and search for the feature name instead of guessing through menus.
Voice Access is an additional input method, not a replacement name for Sticky Keys, Mouse Keys, or the on-screen keyboard. Microsoft states that Voice Access is available in Windows 11 version 22H2 and later. Its setup and commands are documented at Use voice access to control your PC and author text with your voice.
A symptom-first troubleshooting checklist
| Symptom | Check first | Why this is the right branch |
|---|---|---|
| Keys are missed or repeated | Accessibility > Keyboard; review Filter Keys | Filtering can ignore brief or repeated presses |
| A shortcut is hard to press | Accessibility > Keyboard; review Sticky Keys | Sticky Keys allows a multi-key command one key at a time |
| You cannot tell whether a lock key changed | Accessibility > Keyboard; enable Toggle Keys | It adds an audible confirmation for Caps Lock, Num Lock, and Scroll Lock |
| The pointer is hard to find | Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch; consider pointer trails in Additional mouse settings | These controls improve visibility rather than button behavior |
| You need to move the pointer without a mouse | Accessibility > Mouse > Mouse keys | The numeric keypad becomes the pointer control |
| Stereo content is difficult to hear with one earbud | Accessibility > Audio; try Mono audio | Both stereo channels are combined |
| Speech in a video is difficult to follow | Accessibility > Captions; enable and style Live captions | Spoken content is represented as text |
| No output device appears | Audio-device detection and driver troubleshooting | A preference cannot restore a device Windows does not detect |
| Text or colors are difficult to perceive | Accessibility vision controls; then System display settings | Vision aids change presentation, while System contains hardware-dependent display options |
Change one setting at a time and test the original task immediately. That makes it clear which option helped and prevents an accessibility feature from being mistaken for a new hardware fault.
