There is no universal list of Windows apps that always use the most RAM. The biggest users on your PC depend on the programs, browser tabs, files and background work active at that moment. The safest approach is to inspect your own computer in Task Manager, then disable only recognized, nonessential startup items or background permissions. Startup changes are reversible; blocking background activity can stop notifications and updates; broad service changes can break Windows features.
What is using your RAM right now?
Random access memory (RAM) is the short-term workspace Windows and running programs use. When you open more applications, browser tabs or large files, they compete for that workspace. Windows may also use memory for caching and system operations, so a high percentage by itself does not identify a fault. The useful question is which process is consuming memory while the computer feels slow.

Use Task Manager to identify the current users
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, select More details. - Open Processes and select the Memory column to sort processes by their current RAM use. Select the heading again to reverse the order.
- Open Performance and choose Memory to see total installed RAM and the current system-wide usage.
- Leave Task Manager open while you reproduce the slowdown. A process that is large only when you edit a video, open a large spreadsheet or load many tabs may be normal for that workload.
Task Manager describes your PC at that moment, not every Windows computer. The top entry could be a browser, a game, an editor, a virtual machine, a security scan or another program you deliberately opened. Do not end a process merely because its name is unfamiliar. First identify the publisher and whether you recognize the associated application; save work before ending anything.
RAM use is different from startup impact
Task Manager’s Startup apps page reports Low, Medium or High startup impact. Microsoft defines those labels from measured CPU and disk activity while Windows starts. They are not a ranking of how much RAM an app consumes during normal use. An app can have high startup impact but modest ongoing memory use, or low startup impact and later consume substantial RAM when you open a large project.

Which categories commonly become the largest users?
Because usage changes with your workload, treat these as categories to investigate rather than a fixed ranking:
- Browsers: each tab, extension and web application can require memory. A tab playing media or running an interactive document may use more than a static page.
- Creative, engineering and office software: large images, video timelines, 3D scenes, data sets and complex documents can expand memory demand while open.
- Games and virtual machines: they may reserve substantial RAM while running and can make other programs feel slow at the same time.
- Cloud-sync, communication and update utilities: these may remain active to synchronize files, receive messages or check for updates. Their background presence can be useful even when their windows are closed.
- Windows components and security tools: system processes can fluctuate during indexing, updates, scans or maintenance. Ending them without knowing their purpose can remove functionality.
Use the memory column and the Performance view to confirm the actual cause before changing settings. If the largest process belongs to work you need, disabling it is not a safe optimization; reduce its workload, close unneeded documents or add compatible RAM after checking the hardware.
Disable startup apps you do not need at sign-in
Startup controls decide which recognized applications launch automatically when you sign in. They do not uninstall the program and do not prevent you from opening it later. This is usually the safest first change when a PC takes a long time to become responsive after login.

Windows 11 paths
- Open Settings and go to Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Escand select Startup apps. - Review the application name, publisher and status. Choose an app you recognize and do not need immediately after sign-in.
- Select Disable. Sign out or restart to observe whether startup responsiveness improves.
- If you later need automatic launch, return to the same page and select Enable.
Good candidates are optional launchers, meeting tools you use only occasionally, or utilities whose notifications you do not need until you open the app. Keep items required for security, hardware controls, accessibility, backup or work policies unless you understand the consequences. If an app is managed by an employer or school, its policy may override your choice.
What disabling startup does and does not do
- It prevents that app from opening automatically at sign-in.
- You can still start it manually from the Start menu or a file association.
- It may reduce the work Windows performs during login and avoid reserving memory before you need the app.
- It does not guarantee a permanent reduction in RAM: the program will use memory when you launch it.
Startup impact labels can help prioritize investigation, but remember that they describe startup CPU and disk activity, not total RAM use.
Control background activity without losing needed updates
Some Windows 11 apps can run while their windows are closed. Background operation can support notifications, synchronization and updates. Turning it off may reduce activity while you are not using the app, but it can also make the app appear out of date or silent until you open it.

Change an app’s background permission
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage.
- Find the app and open its menu, then choose Manage background activity when that option is available.
- Choose among the available policies. Power optimized is Microsoft’s recommended default for supported apps. Never prevents background operation. Some apps also offer Always.
- Use Never only when you accept that the app will not provide background notifications or updates. Open the app manually when you want it to sync.
These controls are app-specific and do not appear for every desktop program. If the computer must stay connected and receive app updates while an app is inactive, Microsoft says at least one app must be set to Always. Check the result after changing one app at a time so you can identify which notification or sync behavior changed.
What can you safely disable?
| Change | What it affects | Reversible? | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disable a recognized, nonessential startup app | Automatic launch at sign-in | Yes; select Enable later | The app and its functions are unavailable until you open it |
| Set a supported app’s background activity to Never | Inactive notifications, syncing and updates | Yes; choose another policy | You may miss alerts or receive updates only after opening the app |
| Close an app or browser tabs you are not using | Current memory demand | Yes; reopen later | Unsaved work or page state can be lost if you close without saving |
| Disable or alter Windows services | System and application functionality | Sometimes, but recovery can be difficult | Unknown dependencies can cause errors, missing features or an unusable system |
| Install more RAM | Capacity for simultaneous work | Not a software toggle; hardware-dependent | Cost, installation effort and compatibility limits |
Use the first three rows for routine cleanup. The last two require a separate diagnosis and should not be treated as quick settings changes.
Why broad service disabling is risky
Windows services provide functions that applications and the operating system may depend on. A service that appears idle can be required later for networking, printing, security, updates, sign-in or hardware controls. There is no reliable “disable all unnecessary services” list that fits every PC.

Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure is a troubleshooting method for isolating software conflicts, not a permanent performance recipe. If you must use it, create a record of every change, use an administrator account, change only the items needed for the test, and restore normal startup after diagnosis. Microsoft warns that System Configuration changes can temporarily remove functionality and that incorrect changes can make a computer unusable. A clean boot that solves a problem identifies a conflict to investigate; it does not prove that the disabled services should remain off.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check other causes before blaming RAM
A slow computer can be limited by storage, CPU, graphics, software defects or malware rather than memory capacity. Microsoft lists limited storage, outdated software, malware, visual effects, many open apps or browser tabs, and hardware that no longer meets modern needs among possible performance factors.
- Close what you are not using: save documents, exit large programs and reduce unnecessary browser tabs before measuring again.
- Update Windows and applications: updates can address bugs and compatibility problems that look like resource pressure.
- Check Windows Security: run an appropriate scan if unexpected processes, pop-ups or unexplained disk activity accompany the slowdown.
- Review storage: a nearly full system drive can affect updates and general responsiveness even when RAM is adequate.
- Reduce visual effects only if needed: visual settings can affect responsiveness on older hardware, but they do not replace finding a process that is actually consuming memory.
- Restart and reproduce the problem: note whether the slowdown returns after the same app, file or workflow is opened.
If one program grows continuously while idle, crashes or causes memory pressure after a specific task, update or repair that application and check its support guidance. Do not assume that a Windows service is responsible simply because it appears near the top of Task Manager.

When adding RAM makes sense
More RAM can help when you regularly run several demanding programs at once and Task Manager repeatedly shows little available memory during that work. It cannot fix malware, a failing drive, a defective application or a processor that is the actual bottleneck.
Microsoft’s general memory guidance describes at least 4 GB for basic browsing, documents or streaming, 8 GB for longer-term use, and 16 GB or more for editing or high-performance workloads. These are support-page recommendations, not a performance guarantee or a dated laboratory study. Microsoft separately lists 4 GB as the minimum RAM requirement for Windows 11.
Verify compatibility before buying
- Identify the exact computer model, not just the processor family or Windows edition.
- Check the manufacturer’s specifications for maximum supported memory, supported module type, number of slots and whether memory is soldered.
- Confirm whether existing modules must be matched in capacity or configuration.
- Check warranty, installation instructions and whether a qualified technician is needed.
- Buy only a module or kit the manufacturer or a reputable retailer verifies for that exact model.
Some computers cannot be upgraded, while others have a lower maximum than a generic memory kit assumes. If your PC has adequate free memory during the workload that matters, an upgrade may provide little benefit; address the actual bottleneck instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA safe troubleshooting sequence
- Measure first: use Task Manager’s Processes and Performance > Memory views while the slowdown is occurring.
- Identify the workload: note which app, document, game, browser session or background task coincides with high use.
- Reduce current demand: save work and close unused apps or tabs, then see whether responsiveness returns.
- Review startup: disable one recognized, nonessential item and test the next sign-in.
- Review background permissions: use Power optimized by default; choose Never only for an app whose inactive notifications and updates you can forgo.
- Check maintenance causes: update Windows, review storage and run Windows Security when symptoms suggest those causes.
- Escalate carefully: document a clean-boot test if a software conflict is suspected, and restore normal startup afterward.
- Consider hardware: pursue a compatible RAM upgrade only after persistent memory pressure is confirmed and the exact PC supports one.
Bottom line
Task Manager is the only dependable answer to which apps use the most RAM on your particular Windows PC at a particular time. Disable recognized startup apps you do not need at sign-in, and limit background activity only when you accept the loss of inactive notifications or updates. Leave unknown Windows services alone unless you are following a documented troubleshooting procedure. If memory pressure remains during your normal workload, verify the computer’s upgrade limits before considering additional RAM.
