Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePower mode is the Windows setting that most directly changes the balance between laptop speed and battery life. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery, find Power mode, and set the On battery choice. Best performance prioritizes responsiveness, while Balanced and Best power efficiency progressively favor longer runtime.
Several other controls affect the experience, but they do different jobs. Energy saver can limit background work, a power-saving graphics preference can reduce an individual app’s GPU performance, and display brightness, refresh rate, sleep, and background-activity controls mainly reduce energy use rather than making an active task faster.

Power mode is the first setting to check
Windows applies a power-mode choice separately to battery and plugged-in operation. If a laptop becomes less responsive immediately after you unplug it, check the On battery setting before changing anything else:
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Power & battery.
- Under Power mode, choose the battery setting you want.
The available choices are normally Best power efficiency, Balanced, and Best performance. Microsoft says the choices shown can vary with the PC and its manufacturer, so two laptops running the same Windows release may not expose identical controls.

| Power mode | What it favors | Battery effect | Heat and responsiveness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best power efficiency | Lower system power use | Longest runtime among the three modes | May reduce responsiveness for demanding work; generally reduces the conditions that create heat |
| Balanced | A compromise between speed and endurance | Moderate power use | Suitable for general unplugged work |
| Best performance | Responsiveness and sustained performance | Drains the battery faster | Can make the laptop run warmer |
Best performance does not guarantee a fixed percentage increase in speed. The result depends on the processor, cooling system, graphics hardware, workload, battery condition, and the manufacturer’s firmware and thermal controls. Microsoft explicitly warns: “Selecting Best performance increases power consumption. On laptops, this setting will drain the battery more quickly and may cause the device to run warmer.”
When to use each mode
- Best performance: choose it temporarily for a demanding compile, export, virtual machine, large spreadsheet calculation, or other job where responsiveness matters more than unplugged runtime.
- Balanced: use it as the normal starting point for browsing, documents, meetings, and mixed workloads.
- Best power efficiency: use it when extending battery time is more important than peak responsiveness, such as travel or a long period away from a charger.
Power mode controls the overall policy, not just one application. It can influence how aggressively Windows and the hardware pursue performance, but the exact behavior remains device-specific.
What to do if Power mode is missing or locked
If the selector cannot be changed, a custom power plan may be active. Microsoft recommends selecting the Balanced plan in the classic interface:

- Go to System and Security > Power Options.
- Select Balanced.
Return to Settings > System > Power & battery and check the Power mode control again. Some systems do not expose the modern modes at all; availability is controlled by the hardware and manufacturer. A missing option is therefore not necessarily a Windows fault.
Energy saver can reduce performance while it is active
Energy saver is a separate battery-conservation feature. Microsoft describes it as replacing Battery saver in Windows 11 version 24H2 and later. When enabled, Windows and apps can reduce background activity and other energy-consuming behavior. Depending on the workload, that can make the system or an app feel less responsive while the feature is active.

Check Settings > System > Power & battery if performance changes only after the battery reaches a particular level or an energy-saving state appears. Disable Energy saver temporarily when you need maximum responsiveness, then re-enable it when runtime is the priority. The exact trigger and options shown depend on the Windows version and device.
Energy saver is not the same as Power mode. Power mode expresses the performance-versus-efficiency policy you want; Energy saver is an active conservation state that can restrict background work and alter some features. Check both when diagnosing a sudden slowdown on battery.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Per-app graphics preference can trade GPU speed for battery life
Windows lets you choose a graphics preference for an individual application. For a graphics-intensive program, selecting its Power saving option can lower energy use, but it may also reduce graphics performance. The practical effect depends on the app, the installed GPUs, drivers, and the manufacturer’s switching logic.
To inspect an application’s setting, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the app, choose Options, and review the available GPU preference. Use the power-saving choice when the app is light or battery life matters. For a game, 3D design tool, video workflow, or other GPU-heavy task, choose the higher-performance option when it is available and appropriate.
This setting is targeted: it does not change the policy for every program. If one application is slow while the rest of Windows feels normal, its graphics preference is a more relevant check than changing the global Power mode.

Brightness and refresh rate affect battery use, not active-task speed
Display settings can account for a large share of a laptop’s power draw. Microsoft says the display can use up to 40 percent of overall system power and identifies reducing brightness as the most effective way to cut consumption while the display is in use. Lower brightness normally extends runtime, but it does not make the processor or an application run faster.

Brightness
Use the brightness control in Settings > System > Display or the laptop’s hardware brightness keys. Choose the lowest level that remains comfortable and readable. A brighter screen can shorten runtime even when the CPU workload is unchanged.
Refresh rate
If the display supports multiple refresh rates, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and select a lower rate for battery use. A lower refresh rate can reduce display power. It may make scrolling, animation, and pointer movement look less fluid, so use a higher rate when smooth motion is more important than endurance.
Brightness and refresh rate are therefore efficiency controls. They should not be presented as ways to speed up an active export, compile, or calculation.
Screen-off and sleep timers save idle power
On-battery screen-off and sleep timeouts stop the display or suspend the laptop after inactivity. Configure them under Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts when that section is available.

An application that continues working in the background can consume battery even when its window is closed or minimized. Windows’ battery-usage view can identify apps using significant power. Where Windows provides a background-permission control for an app, restrict background activity that you do not need.
Use this approach when the battery falls quickly during light use or when fans run despite no foreground task. Do not disable background activity blindly: synchronization, notifications, security software, and other services may rely on it. Restrict only apps whose background work you understand and can defer.
Manufacturer controls can override the apparent Windows setting
Windows settings are only one layer of a laptop’s power policy. Firmware, device drivers, vendor utilities, GPU switching, processor limits, and thermal protection can change how a selected mode behaves. Microsoft notes that OEM controls affect GPU and thermal factors, so identical Windows modes can produce different noise, heat, battery drain, and responsiveness on different laptops.
That is why a laptop may remain quiet or limit performance in Best performance, or become warm sooner than another model in the same mode. Treat the Windows choice as the policy request and the hardware as the final implementation.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
Follow this order when a laptop feels slow after unplugging:
- Verify the battery mode: open Settings > System > Power & battery and confirm the intended On battery Power mode.
- Check Energy saver: make sure it is not active unexpectedly, especially after the battery reaches a configured threshold.
- Identify the affected workload: if only one graphics-heavy app is slow, inspect its setting in Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Options.
- Check battery usage: look for an app consuming power in the background and restrict its background permission when appropriate.
- Review display settings: lower brightness or refresh rate if the problem is short runtime rather than slow computation.
- Check for a custom plan: if Power mode is unavailable, select Balanced under Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options.
- Account for heat: if the laptop starts fast but slows after several minutes, thermal behavior or OEM limits may be involved; Best performance can make the device warmer rather than eliminating those limits.
This sequence separates a global policy issue from an app-specific GPU choice, display power draw, idle settings, and manufacturer behavior. It also avoids expecting a brightness or sleep change to accelerate an active computation.
Windows 11 is the current path; Windows 10 is out of support
These instructions focus on Windows 11. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so Windows 11 is the main supported path for current guidance. Windows 10 PCs may show different power-plan controls, and the modern Power mode interface is not available on every Windows 10 device or every piece of hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOn a supported Windows 11 laptop, start with Power mode, then inspect Energy saver and per-app graphics settings if the slowdown is selective. Use display, timeout, and background controls to extend runtime, understanding that they address power consumption rather than directly increasing active-task performance.
