ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 features differ by generation, display configuration, firmware, and Windows edition. The documented controls below cover Gen 10 and Gen 11 Aura Edition systems, so check your exact generation and Windows version before following a Lenovo-specific path.

Check the generation and Windows version first
“ThinkPad X1 2-in-1” is a product family, not one fixed software interface. Lenovo’s Gen 10 and Gen 11 Aura Edition documentation exposes overlapping features, but it does not establish that every generation or configuration includes every toggle. A setting may also be absent because of the display panel, camera hardware, firmware, organizational policy, or the edition of Lenovo Vantage installed.

Use Windows 11 for the paths in this guide. Windows 10 uses different navigation, and Microsoft support for it ended on October 14, 2025. To identify your Windows release, open Settings > System > About. For the machine generation, check the model information in the same page or Lenovo Vantage before changing hardware-dependent options.

When a section says “if available,” treat that as a compatibility check, not a missing step. Do not install a generic utility or change firmware settings simply because a feature is absent from your menus.
1. Improve battery life without making the laptop frustrating to use
Choose a Windows power mode
Open Settings > System > Power & battery. Under Power mode, Windows 11 offers three choices:

Use Best power efficiency when runtime is the priority and Balanced when you want a sensible default. Switch to Best performance only for work that benefits from it, then switch back. Lenovo’s Gen 11 FAQ also advises checking whether the system has been left in a high-performance setting when the battery drains unusually quickly.

Set separate screen and sleep timers
In Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts, set independent values for battery and plugged-in operation. A shorter display timeout saves power during interruptions; a longer AC timeout prevents the screen from going dark while you are reading or presenting. Set sleep separately from screen-off so the computer can stop drawing power after a longer idle period.
Aggressive timers can interrupt a download, video, presentation, or note-taking session. Change one value at a time and use the laptop normally for a day before shortening it further.

Lower brightness and disable the keyboard backlight when practical
Use the brightness slider in Settings > System > Display or Windows 11 Quick Settings. Lenovo specifically lists reduced display brightness and turning off the keyboard backlight as battery-drain remedies. The backlight control is usually a dedicated keyboard key; use the key’s available levels rather than assuming every X1 generation has the same shortcut.
Some supported Windows 11 displays include content-adaptive brightness controls. These can change brightness or contrast in response to what is on screen. Leave them enabled if automatic adjustment is useful; turn them off when brightness changes interfere with color-sensitive work, understanding that disabling adaptive behavior can reduce a possible battery saving.

On models that expose them, Lenovo Vantage may provide Intelligent Cooling modes such as Best power efficiency, Balanced, and Best performance, along with Vantage Global Power Management. These controls are model-specific. If Vantage offers a cooling or thermal profile, select the efficiency profile for quiet, unplugged work and reserve the performance profile for sustained workloads.
Use Smart Charge if the laptop spends most of its time plugged in
Supported Gen 10 Aura Edition systems document Smart Charge in Lenovo Vantage > Menu > Power > Battery settings. Automatic mode learns daily usage patterns and keeps the battery at a lower charge level during off-hours. Manual mode lets you define battery-level thresholds.
This is most useful for a desk-based laptop that remains connected to AC power. It is not a promise of a specific lifespan extension, and the reviewed Lenovo material does not establish Smart Charge on every X1 2-in-1 generation or configuration. If the menu is missing, use the Windows power controls instead of forcing an unsupported package.

2. Tighten camera and microphone privacy
Review Windows permissions
Open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera, then repeat the process under Microphone. Review the switches for device access, app access, and desktop-app access. Turn off access for apps that do not need it, and revisit the list after installing a conferencing, recording, or browser application.
Microsoft notes that traditional desktop applications may not appear as individually switchable entries. Therefore, Windows permissions let you control broad categories of access, but they do not guarantee a separate on/off switch for every program.
Use the physical shutter and Lenovo camera controls together
If the camera appears unavailable, check the physical privacy shutter before changing drivers or Windows settings. On supported systems, Lenovo Vantage may also offer Camera Privacy Mode. Windows permissions, Lenovo’s software control, and the physical shutter are separate layers; opening one does not automatically override the others.
If a meeting application still reports no camera, check all three layers, confirm that the intended camera is selected in the application, and then restart the application. Avoid disabling microphone access globally when only camera privacy is the issue.
3. Decide whether presence sensing and automatic dimming help you
On compatible Windows 11 PCs, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep. Presence settings can turn the screen off when you leave and wake it when you return. The controls appear only when the manufacturer supplies the required capability, and an organization can restrict them.

Lenovo options on supported Aura configurations
Lenovo documents User Presence Sensing on supported X1 2-in-1 Aura configurations. Related options can include Zero Touch Lock/Login and Adaptive Dimming. Enable only the behaviors you actually want: automatic locking improves privacy, while automatic wake can be convenient but may consume more power than a manual workflow.
Test the convertible in its real positions
Lenovo’s Gen 11 FAQ identifies several conditions that can prevent presence sensing from working: tent, tablet, or stand mode; hibernation or shutdown; a closed camera shutter; a display configured never to turn off; very bright or very dark environments; and local regulations that restrict the feature. Test the setting at your desk and in the lighting and posture you normally use. If it behaves inconsistently, first return the computer to laptop mode, open the shutter, and use a finite display timeout.

Turn on built-in ePrivacy only when your panel supports it
On the documented Gen 10 Aura Edition configuration, ePrivacy is disabled by default. Toggle it with Fn+D or through Lenovo Vantage > Display & Camera > Privacy Guard. The privacy effect varies with brightness, contrast, and the surrounding environment, so verify the result from the viewing angle you expect in a train, café, or office.
Do not assume every X1 2-in-1 has this integrated feature. First verify the exact display configuration. If it is absent, that is a hardware or configuration difference, not a Windows permission that can be enabled in software.

The Gen 10 Aura Edition guide describes USB-C Restricted Mode, which disables USB-C data transfer while retaining charging. Use it when you must charge from an unfamiliar USB-C source and want to reduce the chance of data exchange through that port, provided your machine exposes the setting.

Restricted Mode is a narrow port control, not a replacement for account protection, encryption, device updates, or cautious handling of unknown accessories.
5. Configure convertible-specific convenience
Choose whether opening the lid should start the computer
On supported Gen 11 systems, Flip to Start powers on the computer when you open the lid. Lenovo documents the switch in Commercial Vantage > Menu > Device settings > Power and in Firmware Setup Utility.
Enable it if you frequently open the X1 to begin work immediately. Disable it if you carry the computer in a bag, want the lid to remain a purely mechanical action, or prefer to start it only with the power button. This is a convenience preference, not a required battery or security optimization.

Verify pen compatibility before buying an accessory
A compatible pen can make tablet mode useful for handwriting and annotation, but compatibility must be checked against the exact X1 2-in-1 generation and configuration. Lenovo’s material discusses pen setup on Gen 11 and pen use on Gen 10 without establishing one universal pen model for every generation. Confirm the supported pen, charging or pairing method, and whether your configuration already includes one before purchasing.
6. Apply the settings in a low-risk order
- Record the ThinkPad generation, Windows edition, and current Lenovo Vantage version.
- Set Power mode to Best power efficiency for travel or Balanced for mixed use.
- Choose battery and AC values under Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Reduce brightness and keyboard-backlight use to a level that remains comfortable.
- Check Vantage for an applicable cooling profile and Smart Charge; do not assume either exists.
- Review Windows camera and microphone permissions, then test the shutter and any Camera Privacy Mode.
- Enable presence sensing, Zero Touch Lock/Login, or Adaptive Dimming only if the feature appears and works in your normal posture and lighting.
- Verify ePrivacy and USB-C Restricted Mode before relying on them in public.
- Choose Flip to Start according to your carrying and startup habits.
- Restart once after major Lenovo or firmware changes and confirm that meetings, charging, sleep, and tablet-mode workflows still work.
7. Troubleshoot by symptom
The battery still drains quickly
- Check that Windows and Lenovo profiles are not both set to a high-performance mode.
- Shorten the battery screen and sleep timers and reduce brightness.
- Turn off the keyboard backlight when it is unnecessary.
- Look for a demanding application or connected accessory before changing firmware settings.
- If the machine is usually plugged in, check whether supported Smart Charge controls are available.
The camera or microphone cannot be used
- Review Windows permissions under Privacy & security.
- Open the physical camera shutter.
- Check Lenovo Camera Privacy Mode if Vantage provides it.
- Confirm the correct input device inside the calling application.
Presence sensing behaves unpredictably
- Test in laptop mode with the shutter open.
- Ensure the display is allowed to turn off instead of being set to never.
- Avoid judging the feature in extreme bright or dark light.
- Remember that hibernation and shutdown are different from an active, locked session.
A Lenovo setting is missing
Absence usually indicates a generation, display, firmware, Vantage edition, or organizational-policy difference. Recheck the model and Windows version, install updates from Lenovo’s supported channels, and use the Windows equivalent where one exists. Do not treat a menu shown in a Gen 10 or Gen 11 guide as proof that every ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 exposes it.
