Weglot translates pages broadly by default, while exclusions, localized slugs, integration type, and DNS choices determine what actually reaches visitors. Use the checklist below to make those decisions deliberately rather than accepting every default.
1. Connect the correct WordPress site and language pair
The first settings determine which Weglot project serves the site and how every later translation is interpreted. Weglot’s WordPress integration requires three core values: the project API key, the language the site was originally written in, and one or more destination languages.

Install and activate the plugin
- Install the Weglot plugin from the WordPress admin and activate it.
- Open the Weglot settings screen and enter the API key for the project that belongs to this website.
- Save the settings, then confirm that the connection succeeds rather than relying on a field that merely contains text.
Use the key for the production project that will own the translations. A key copied from another site, staging project, or test account can make the dashboard appear configured while sending the wrong content to visitors.
Choose the original language carefully
Select the language in which the WordPress content was authored, not the language you expect to become most popular. This setting is the source language for translation and URL behavior. If the site is written in Canadian French, for example, do not silently label it as English because English is the first destination language. Review the site’s actual posts, navigation, metadata, forms, and reusable blocks before saving.

Add destination languages deliberately
Destination languages are the versions visitors can request. Start with languages that the site can support editorially, including customer service, legal text, forms, and ongoing updates. Adding a language creates a real maintenance obligation: new source content, changed navigation labels, and corrected metadata all need review in that language. Do not add a language merely because the plugin makes selection easy.
2. Decide what Weglot should translate
Weglot translates all pages by default. That broad scope is convenient for a small brochure site but can expose areas that should remain private, untranslated, or controlled by another workflow.
Exclude complete URLs
Use URL exclusions for pages such as:
- Private account, login, password-reset, and dashboard screens.
- Checkout or payment steps that are handled by a separate multilingual system.
- Legal pages already maintained and approved in each language by your organization.
- Internal tools, preview pages, campaign experiments, or content that should not be machine-translated.
Define these exclusions before launch and test the exact paths, including trailing-slash and query-string variants used by your site. An exclusion controls future processing; it does not automatically erase translations that Weglot has already generated. If old translated entries must disappear, use the applicable deletion option in Weglot after confirming that you are deleting the intended content.

A complete-page exclusion is too broad when only one section should remain identical in every language. Use block exclusions for items such as a product code, a legal registration number, a brand mark, a data visualization, or a support widget whose text is managed elsewhere. Check the rendered page afterward: a block can contain nested text, attributes, or links that need separate handling.

Separate policy from convenience
Machine translation is not a policy decision. For regulated notices, safety instructions, contracts, medical information, or account-related messages, decide who approves each language and where the approved wording lives. Weglot’s scope controls can keep an area out of automatic translation, but they do not determine whether your organization has fulfilled its translation or disclosure obligations.
3. Inspect translated URLs and SEO output
Weglot documents language-specific URLs for translated pages, translated SEO metadata, and hreflang tags. Treat those as output to inspect, not as proof that every URL, canonical relationship, or language variant works correctly.
Compare URL architectures before production

There is no universally correct architecture in the available documentation. Choose according to deployment constraints, DNS ownership, redirect control, caching, analytics, and how your team will operate multiple language versions.

Check hreflang and metadata in the source
Open representative pages in each language and inspect the HTML source or rendered head. Confirm that the page has the expected language-specific URL, title, description, and alternate-language references. Weglot’s WordPress SEO guidance says x-default is not added by default. If your internationalization plan requires an x-default alternate, determine how your own SEO stack will provide it and test for duplicate or conflicting tags. Do not assume that the presence of one hreflang tag proves that the full language set is correct.

4. Decide whether translated URL slugs are necessary
Weglot uses the original URL slug by default. For example, a translated page can display translated text while retaining the source-language wording in its path. That is a valid choice when stable URLs, simpler operations, or existing links matter more than fully localized paths.
Translated slugs are available on Pro plans or higher for supported server-side integrations such as WordPress. If localized paths are important to your audience:
- Confirm that the project plan and WordPress integration are eligible.
- Set the translated slug in Weglot’s translation tools.
- Open the resulting link from menus, in-content links, XML sitemaps, redirects, and search previews.
- Test old and new paths so that a slug change does not leave broken links or redirect chains.
Choose one policy and apply it consistently. Mixing translated slugs on some content with source-language slugs on similar content can make navigation, analytics, and support documentation harder to manage.
5. Put the language switcher where visitors can find it
The switcher is configurable through a menu, widget, shortcode, or page source. Weglot describes a bottom-right floating button as the default and provides a Switcher Editor for appearance and placement. The default is only a starting point; the best location depends on your theme and audience.

Use the Switcher Editor to match the site’s typography, contrast, labels, and spacing. Then select each language on a live-looking page and confirm that the destination is the corresponding version of the same page, not merely the language homepage. Check keyboard focus, touch targets, and mobile orientation as well as desktop appearance.

Use Weglot’s contextual or visual editing tools to review important text and metadata in the layout where visitors see it. This is especially useful for headings, buttons, navigation, image alternatives, page titles, and descriptions whose meaning depends on surrounding content.
Prioritize high-consequence content
- Global navigation, breadcrumbs, search labels, and calls to action.
- Forms, validation messages, confirmation screens, and contact details.
- Product or service descriptions, prices, availability wording, and purchase instructions.
- Legal notices, privacy and cookie language, accessibility text, and account instructions.
- Page titles, meta descriptions, social-sharing text, and prominent structured content.
Mark terminology that must remain consistent, such as product names, technical terms, or formal organization names. Have a fluent reviewer check the pages that can create legal, financial, safety, or reputational risk rather than treating machine output as final copy.

Know what the visual preview cannot prove
Weglot documents limitations in its Visual Editor preview for login systems, cart actions, cookie banners, and some dynamic or personalized content. A preview may show a translation correctly while the real interaction fails after a user signs in, adds an item, accepts a cookie, or receives personalized data. Run those journeys on the actual site with the required plugins, consent state, session, and device sizes.
7. Match the integration to your deployment stage
For testing, development, or staging, Weglot recommends its JavaScript integration. It can let a team evaluate language coverage without first changing DNS. Production sites that need dedicated subdomains or subdirectories require a domain and DNS access, so involve whoever controls those systems before the launch window.
- Use the staging-appropriate integration while content, theme, and plugin compatibility are being evaluated.
- List the production host names or directories, certificate requirements, redirects, caching rules, and analytics properties.
- Assign an owner for DNS records and for rollback if a language host fails.
- Make the production change in a controlled window and retest every language URL, not only the home page.
Do not assume that an integration that is convenient for staging has the same operational behavior as the production architecture you ultimately need.
8. Run this prelaunch inspection
- Load the original-language home page and at least one representative page for every major template.
- Switch languages from the header or floating control and verify that each selection opens the matching page.
- Check that excluded URLs remain excluded and that excluded blocks are unchanged.
- Open translated pages directly in a fresh browser session, including a deep link rather than only a navigation click.
- Inspect page titles, descriptions, canonical data, hreflang entries, and the absence or intentional handling of
x-default. - Follow internal links, breadcrumbs, pagination, media links, downloads, and redirects in every important language.
- Submit forms, trigger validation errors, test account states, add items to carts where applicable, and verify consent-banner behavior.
- Test keyboard navigation, mobile layouts, zoom, slow connections, and overlays around the language switcher.
- Ask a fluent reviewer to check high-risk copy and record corrections in the translation system.
- Capture the final API key, language list, exclusions, URL policy, DNS changes, and rollback owner in the site’s operational notes.
9. Troubleshoot a missing language switcher
If the switcher does not appear, work through the checks Weglot documents rather than immediately changing theme code:
- Verify that the API key is correct and that the Weglot settings were saved successfully.
- Check whether the current URL is excluded from translation.
- Confirm that the selected menu, widget, shortcode, or theme location is present in the template you are viewing.
- Temporarily test another supported placement to identify a theme or menu conflict.
- Inspect the page for CSS, caching, optimization, consent, or JavaScript errors that could hide or prevent the control.
After each change, test both the visible control and the destination language. A switcher that appears but sends visitors to the wrong URL is still a launch-blocking configuration error.
10. Make the decisions that depend on your audience
Weglot documents the available settings, but your audience determines the right values. Before launch, write down the answers to these questions:
- Which languages can your organization review and maintain continuously?
- Which pages must remain private, legally controlled, or untranslated?
- Will visitors understand source-language slugs, or is a localized URL worth the plan and redirect work?
- Does your deployment team control DNS and redirects for subdomains or subdirectories?
- Where will mobile and returning visitors expect to find the switcher?
- Which authenticated, personalized, commerce, and consent flows require testing outside the visual editor?
Once those answers are recorded, configure the settings, inspect representative output, and complete the real-site workflow tests before announcing the multilingual launch.
