Make changes while parked: these options influence the routes and warnings Waze can offer, but they cannot override available roads, incomplete map reports or local laws.
Start with a parked, pre-drive check
Waze settings are easiest to review on your phone before the vehicle moves. Menu names and availability can differ by app version, phone platform and country, so treat the paths below as the current general locations and look for the closest matching label in your app. If Waze is connected to a car display, many settings are still changed on the phone and then apply to the connected session.

- Park safely and open Waze.
- Tap the menu or profile control, then open Settings.
- Review the route, vehicle, alert, privacy, personalization and audio sections that matter to this trip.
- Set a destination and compare the offered routes instead of assuming an avoid option will remove every unwanted road type.

Choose route preferences for this trip
Tolls, ferries and freeways
Open Settings → Navigation and review Avoid toll roads, Avoid ferries and Avoid freeways. These are preferences, not absolute barriers. Waze may still suggest a toll road, ferry or freeway when that is the only practical route available at the time. With toll avoidance enabled, Waze says the first route should be toll-free unless no toll-free route exists.
Use the options according to the trip rather than switching all three on automatically. A freeway may be the safest or quickest choice for a long journey; avoiding it can send you onto slower local roads. A ferry setting matters only where a water crossing is part of the alternatives. After entering the destination, inspect each route’s estimated time, road type and displayed toll information. You can also change avoid options while planning a route; the change applies to future drives.

Compare the actual alternatives
Do not treat an avoid setting as a promise. The useful decision is the combination of route cost, road type, expected arrival time and any special access requirement. If an offered route conflicts with your plan, open the route list and select another option before starting navigation.
Check vehicle type, toll passes and HOV access
Unexpected express-lane or high-occupancy-vehicle routing often comes from an incorrect vehicle profile or pass. Open the section labeled Toll and HOV passes and verify both the vehicle type and every pass listed for the journey.
Vehicle profile
Waze says routing can change when the vehicle is set to Taxi or Electric car. If you are driving an ordinary private car, confirm that the vehicle is set to Private. A wrong profile can make a route appear eligible for lanes or restrictions that do not apply to you.
Passes and vignettes
Remove expired passes and add the road passes or vignettes you genuinely hold. Pass names and availability vary by country, and pass rules can change by a local authority. Check the current pass for the places on your route instead of assuming a pass shown in the app is valid everywhere. A pass entry should describe your legal access; it should not be used to obtain a quicker route you are not entitled to take.
When toll avoidance conflicts with a pass
If you have a valid toll pass but also enable Avoid toll roads, the avoidance preference can steer Waze away from roads your pass covers. Decide whether the priority is using the pass, minimizing toll-road travel or arriving by the fastest available route, then compare the resulting routes.

Make road-feature alerts useful rather than distracting
Waze lets you decide whether individual road-feature warnings appear on the map, play an alert while driving, or remain disabled. Review the alert list in settings and keep the warnings that help you prepare without competing with essential directions.
Alert categories to review
Documented feature types include railroad crossings, traffic lights, toll booths, speed bumps, sharp curves, speed-limit changes, complex intersections, merging areas and school zones. Your list can differ by location and app version. A driver who frequently travels through unfamiliar areas may prefer more advance warnings; a driver who finds repeated low-value sounds distracting may keep only the alerts that change an immediate decision.

What an alert does not guarantee
Waze’s road-feature information depends partly on reports from partners and map editors. If a feature has not been reported, the app may not know it exists. Alerts therefore supplement, rather than replace, posted signs and your view of the road.
There are also specific behavior limits. A railroad-crossing alert can remain on screen until you have crossed the tracks. A speed-limit-change warning may not appear when you are already below the new limit. Neither behavior means the road is free of hazards; it reflects how the alert is triggered.
Average-speed enforcement zones
In countries where average-speed enforcement exists, Waze says it can provide voice and visual notifications. Camera information still depends on partner and editor reports. Waze shows your live speed but does not currently calculate or display your average speed through the zone. Follow the posted limit and local enforcement rules rather than relying on the warning.

Review privacy, visibility and location access
Open Settings → Privacy when you want to control what is visible, retained or used for convenience features. These controls address different things, so changing one does not automatically change the others.

Go invisible controls whether details such as your username, mood and points can be displayed publicly on the map. Depending on your account and connections, friends may also see a name and photo. Turn it on when you do not want normal map activity associated with your visible profile.
Navigation history and recent locations
Waze provides controls for navigation history and recent locations. You can delete drives and destinations from their respective lists. Removing history has a practical effect beyond cleaning up the screen: deleted drives are not available for the personalized-routing feature described below.
Ad personalization
The ad-personalization control changes how relevant Waze says displayed ads are intended to be. Turning personalization off does not mean ads disappear; you can still see ads. For broader details about data handling, consult Waze’s current privacy policy rather than interpreting this switch as a complete account-privacy setting.
Background location
Depending on your settings, Waze may check location while the app is not in use for functions such as planned-drive reminders, traffic updates and parking assistance. Review both Waze’s in-app privacy controls and the phone’s operating-system permission for location access. On Android or iOS, the device-level permission can allow, limit or deny background access independently of the Waze switch.

Account deletion is not the same as erasing every contribution
Waze says deleting an account removes saved places and navigation history. Contributions such as map edits and statistical drive data are not removed; they are no longer linked to the account. If complete removal of every contribution is your goal, do not assume account deletion provides that result.
Decide whether personalized routes and ETAs fit you
Personalized routing is on by default according to Waze’s help documentation, and it can be turned off in settings. When enabled, Waze may use past routes to make choices such as favoring main roads over back streets or avoiding a street you often detour around.
Availability is not universal. Waze says personalized routes and personalized estimated arrival times are unsupported in some areas, and personalized ETAs may require enough drives in navigation history. If you have deleted those drives, they cannot be used for personalization.
Leave the feature enabled if you value route and ETA suggestions shaped by your driving patterns. Turn it off if you do not want past trips used for that purpose. Neither choice guarantees a shorter trip or a more accurate arrival time; traffic, map data and the roads available for the current journey still determine the result.
Set voice and audio behavior before moving
Open Waze’s audio settings and confirm where directions and alerts should play. The Play sound to phone speaker option sends Waze prompts and warnings through the phone speaker when enabled. When disabled, they can play over your music at a slightly higher volume, depending on the vehicle and audio connection.

Test the setting while parked with the same connection you will use on the road. Waze lists compatible audio players, but availability can vary by country and supported apps can change over time. If a music app takes priority or the car connection is unreliable, choose the output that keeps turn instructions and safety warnings audible without requiring you to handle the phone.
A practical pre-drive sequence
Use this order when preparing a trip with unusual restrictions, a new vehicle or a privacy-sensitive destination:
- Navigation: decide whether tolls, ferries or freeways fit the journey, then inspect the proposed routes and ETAs.
- Vehicle and passes: confirm Private, Taxi or Electric car is correct, and verify every toll, HOV pass or vignette.
- Alerts: enable map and audio warnings that aid anticipation; silence categories that create distraction.
- Privacy: review Go invisible, history, recent locations, ad personalization and background-location permissions.
- Personalization: choose whether past drives should influence routes and ETAs, remembering that availability differs by area.
- Audio: play a test prompt and make sure it comes through the intended speaker or car system.
- Destination: verify the final route on the map and start navigation only after the phone is mounted or the in-car display is ready.
Fix the most common surprises
Waze still shows a toll, ferry or freeway
Recheck the relevant avoid option, then look at the alternative routes. The setting is a preference and Waze can include the road type when no suitable alternative is available. If a pass is listed, confirm that it is current and that the vehicle profile is correct.

Open Toll and HOV passes, remove expired entries and verify that the vehicle is not incorrectly set to Taxi or Electric car. Check whether the selected route assumes a pass you do not possess. Choose a different route if the lane’s occupancy or payment rules do not fit your trip.
An expected warning never appeared
Check whether the alert type is enabled for both map display and driving notification. Then remember that Waze may lack an unreported road feature, and that some alerts have trigger conditions, such as a speed-limit-change warning not appearing when you are already below the new limit. Continue to rely on signs, signals and road conditions.
Directions are hard to hear
Revisit Play sound to phone speaker, the car’s media volume and the active Bluetooth, CarPlay or Android Auto connection. Make the change while parked and test another prompt before driving.
Personalized suggestions changed after clearing history
Deleting drives removes them from the history used for personalized routes. The feature may also be unavailable in your area or lack enough remaining drives to tailor ETAs. You can leave personalization on while rebuilding history or turn it off for a more general routing experience.

The highest-value checks are the ones that can change a legal or practical decision: route avoidance, vehicle and pass information, alert volume, privacy and audio output. Review them while stationary, compare the actual routes Waze offers, and treat every warning as supplemental information rather than a substitute for signs, road markings and attentive driving.
