Which VS Code Copilot Sandbox Settings Should You Change?

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For current VS Code Copilot Agent Host sessions, change chat.agent.sandbox.enabled first, then narrow network, filesystem, credential and fallback settings to the task. The documented switch is off by default. Configure it on the machine that actually runs the agent, not necessarily the computer displaying the VS Code window, and start a new Agent Host session after changing host-level policy.

Sandboxing limits supported terminal processes; it does not replace approvals, Workspace Trust, extension security or endpoint protection. The safest practical policy is least privilege: no network unless required, only the paths and domains the task needs, no unnecessary credentials, and no unsandboxed fallback when your policy requires fail-closed behavior. The current guidance was checked against Visual Studio Code documentation on October 13, 2026; settings, support labels and prerequisites can change.

Start by identifying the Agent Host

Before editing settings, determine where the Copilot agent executes. A local VS Code window can connect to a remote development machine, container or WSL environment. Agent Host settings, operating-system prerequisites and path rules apply on that execution host. A setting changed only on your local client may have no effect on a remote agent.

  1. Open the workspace in VS Code and start the Copilot Agent experience you intend to use.
  2. Check whether the session is local, remote, containerized or running through WSL.
  3. Open the effective session policy or sandbox details exposed by the Agent Host and confirm the host, enabled controls and any organization-managed values.
  4. Change policy on that host, then create a new Agent Host session. Existing sessions may retain the previous host-level policy.

Managed organization settings can override user preferences. Treat the effective policy shown for the session as authoritative.

The settings worth changing

Setting or control Documented default and function When to change it
chat.agent.sandbox.enabled Off. Enables the unified Agent Host sandbox for supported terminal processes. Turn on whenever commands should run with operating-system-enforced restrictions.
chat.agent.sandbox.network.allowNetwork true. Allows outbound network access subject to destination restrictions. Set to false for offline work; otherwise combine it with a narrow domain allow list.
chat.agent.sandbox.network.allowLocalNetwork false. Controls access to hosts on the local or private network. Keep off unless the task needs an internal service, device or private-network endpoint.
chat.agent.sandbox.network.allowedDomains and deniedDomains Both lists are empty by default. They restrict destinations when outbound access is enabled. Prefer specific required domains in an allow list. Use deny rules for known destinations that must never be contacted.
chat.agent.sandbox.fileSystem.userConfiguredPaths Custom read/write, read-only and denied path lists; each list is empty by default. Add only the files or directories required by the task. Keep secrets and unrelated personal data outside those paths.
chat.agent.sandbox.fileSystem.allowDevToolAccess true. Exposes common developer tools, configuration and caches. Disable when the task does not need them, accepting that some development workflows may stop working.
chat.agent.sandbox.credentials.authenticategit and authenticategh Both true. Make Git or GitHub credentials available to sandboxed processes for relevant operations. Disable credentials that are not needed. An in-sandbox process can use an enabled account with that account’s permissions.
chat.agent.sandbox.allowUnsandboxedCommands true. May permit a confirmed one-command or session fallback outside sandbox restrictions. Set to false for a fail-closed policy. Blocked commands then fail instead of offering an outside-sandbox run.

Enable the Agent Host sandbox

Set chat.agent.sandbox.enabled to true in VS Code Settings or your applicable settings JSON on the execution host. The exact settings UI can change between VS Code releases, so search for “agent sandbox” rather than relying on an old screenshot.

  1. Open Settings (Ctrl+, on Windows/Linux or Cmd+, on macOS).
  2. Search for chat.agent.sandbox.enabled.
  3. Enable the setting, or add the equivalent key to the host’s settings JSON.
  4. Start a new Agent Host session.
  5. Inspect the effective policy and run a harmless command that demonstrates the expected restriction before allowing the agent to modify important files.

Turning on the switch is not the same as granting broad access. The useful security decision comes from the path, network, credential and fallback rules that follow.

Choose a network policy deliberately

Offline tasks

For refactoring, formatting, local tests or document work that needs no downloads, set chat.agent.sandbox.network.allowNetwork to false. This removes outbound access rather than merely trusting the agent to avoid the internet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Selected external services

If the task needs a package registry, documentation host, source-control service or API, leave outbound access enabled and populate allowedDomains with the specific destinations. Use the narrowest hostnames that support the workflow. An allowed destination can receive requests, command effects and potentially workspace data, so domain access is a data-sharing decision, not just a connectivity switch.

Local and private-network services

allowLocalNetwork is separate and defaults to false. Keep it disabled unless the agent must reach a database, development server, network device or other private endpoint. Enabling outbound internet access does not imply permission to reach your local network.

On Windows, proxy and hostname-restriction configurations have documented interactions with local-network access. Check the current Agent Host guide and the effective session policy before depending on a proxy or private hostname.

Limit filesystem access

Use chat.agent.sandbox.fileSystem.userConfiguredPaths to express the smallest useful boundary. Separate paths into the access modes offered by the current guide: read/write for files the agent must change, read-only for reference material, and denied paths for sensitive locations that should remain inaccessible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Grant the project directory rather than an entire home directory or drive.
  • Add a separate read-only path for shared schemas, fixtures or documentation when required.
  • Keep SSH keys, cloud credentials, password stores, browser profiles and unrelated repositories outside the allowed set.
  • Review inherited or organization-managed paths before assuming an empty user list means no access.

Path rules are evaluated on the execution host. A path that exists on your laptop may not exist, or may refer to a different location, on a remote host.

Developer-tool access

chat.agent.sandbox.fileSystem.allowDevToolAccess defaults to true and exposes common developer tools, configuration and caches. Leave it enabled when builds, language servers or package managers genuinely require those resources. Disable it for a narrowly scoped task that only edits files, and expect tools that depend on global configuration or caches to fail.

Decide whether credentials belong in the sandbox

chat.agent.sandbox.credentials.authenticategit and authenticategh are each enabled by default. They make the corresponding credentials available to sandboxed processes for relevant operations such as fetching, pushing or working with hosted repositories.

Turn off either credential path when the task does not need it. If enabled, assume commands can act with the associated account’s permissions: read private repositories, create changes or use other capabilities granted to that account. Sandboxing does not neutralize credentials that you explicitly inject into a process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a fail-open or fail-closed fallback

chat.agent.sandbox.allowUnsandboxedCommands defaults to true. When a command cannot run within the sandbox, the Agent Host may offer a confirmed one-command or session fallback outside those restrictions.

Set it to false when every command must remain sandboxed, such as work involving untrusted code or sensitive data. The trade-off is operational: a blocked command fails rather than prompting for an outside-sandbox exception. If you leave the fallback enabled, treat each confirmation as a deliberate expansion of the execution boundary, not as a routine approval.

Keep approvals separate from sandboxing

Visual Studio Code’s approvals documentation states: “Sandboxing is independent of the permission level.” Permission levels decide whether an action requires confirmation. The sandbox constrains supported terminal processes. A permissive approval mode therefore does not disable an enabled terminal sandbox, while sandboxing does not approve other tools, URLs or built-in file operations.

Terminal auto-approval is a convenience feature with detection limitations, not a security boundary. Prefer session-scoped or per-action approvals, especially when a task can install packages, alter generated files, contact external services or use credentials. Do not use global auto-approval as a substitute for narrowing the sandbox.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Workspace Trust for unfamiliar repositories

Workspace Trust and the Agent Host sandbox address different risks. Open an unfamiliar folder in Restricted Mode while inspecting it. Restricted Mode limits agents, terminals, tasks, debugging, workspace settings and extensions; terminal launch is blocked by default.

Review scripts, configuration, dependencies and extension recommendations before choosing to trust the folder. Trust only when the repository and its required execution are appropriate for your environment. Restricted Mode reduces execution, but VS Code cautions that it cannot stop a malicious extension that deliberately ignores the mode.

Platform prerequisites and execution-host support

Support changes with the operating system and Agent Host release. Verify the live official guide immediately before setup, particularly on Windows.

Execution environment Current documented requirement
macOS No additional package requirement is listed in the guide.
Linux Install bubblewrap and socat. Debian/Ubuntu: sudo apt-get install bubblewrap socat. Fedora: sudo dnf install bubblewrap socat.
WSL2 Requires bubblewrap and socat; WSL 1 is unsupported.
Windows Support is marked experimental and requires the applicable Windows security update. The guide lists Windows 11 24H2/25H2 KB5124008 and Windows 11 26H1 KB5124012; confirm the current requirement before deployment.

Install Linux packages on the Linux or WSL execution host, not automatically on the local machine running the VS Code client. A remote Agent Host has its own operating-system support and prerequisites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy legacy Local or custom-terminal settings

The current sandbox article applies to the Agent Host’s default Copilot SDK tool implementation. It does not describe the Local chat harness or a custom terminal override.

Platform-specific settings such as chat.agent.sandbox.fileSystem.mac, .linux and .windows are deprecated legacy settings and are ignored by Agent Host. Local-only retry and auto-approval settings likewise should not be presented as Agent Host controls. If an old guide tells you to configure those keys, first identify the harness it targeted and migrate to the unified Agent Host settings where applicable.

Understand what the sandbox does not protect

  • It is not a virtual machine, a full user-account boundary or a replacement for endpoint security.
  • Credentials explicitly injected into a process remain usable by that process.
  • Extra allowed paths, broad developer-tool access, unrestricted network access and local-network access weaken isolation.
  • An unsandboxed fallback can bypass the restrictions for the command or session you approve.
  • Not every built-in agent tool is covered by process sandboxing; VS Code’s permission system governs built-in read, edit and write tools.

Use the sandbox as one layer in a defense-in-depth policy. Keep operating-system accounts, repository permissions, secrets management and extension hygiene appropriately restricted.

Understand setting precedence and effective policy

Defaults are only the starting point. A user-configured list can be empty while an organization policy, remote-host configuration or workspace-specific rule still affects the session. Conversely, a setting shown in your local desktop may not be used by a remote Agent Host. Always inspect the effective policy after connecting to the target host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a command behaves unexpectedly, compare four things separately: the execution host, the harness, the sandbox switch and the permission decision. This prevents a common mistake in which a user changes a network setting while the real problem is that the command ran through a custom terminal or an approved unsandboxed fallback.

Agent Host, Local and custom terminal: what changes

Execution path Configuration approach Common mistake
Agent Host default Copilot SDK tools Use the unified chat.agent.sandbox.* settings and create a new session after host-level changes. Assuming a legacy platform-specific key still controls the session.
Local chat harness Follow the controls documented for the Local harness, which can have different approval or retry behavior. Applying Agent Host guidance and expecting Local to enforce the same boundary.
Custom terminal override Check the custom implementation’s own execution and security model. Assuming the default Agent Host process sandbox covers an overridden terminal.

This distinction matters for audits: record which harness was used, not just the visible VS Code version.

Test the policy without exposing real data

Use a disposable workspace and harmless checks before a production task. Confirm that a permitted project file can be read or edited, a denied path is unavailable, an unlisted domain is blocked, and a required allow-listed service still works. Test local-network access separately from ordinary outbound access. If a command requests an unsandboxed fallback, stop and decide whether that exception is acceptable rather than approving automatically.

Repeat the checks after moving from local to remote development, changing containers or switching from WSL2 to another host. The same setting names do not guarantee identical host capabilities, package availability or operating-system enforcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical policy profiles

Task Network Filesystem Credentials Fallback
Offline editing or local tests allowNetwork=false; local network off Workspace read/write only; developer-tool access only if tests need it Git and GitHub authentication off Disabled
Package or documentation work Outbound on with a short allowed-domain list; local network off Workspace plus narrowly scoped caches or reference paths Enable only the credential required for the operation Prefer disabled; allow a confirmed exception only under a controlled policy
Internal service development Outbound on; local network on only for the named service Project paths plus read-only fixtures or configuration as needed Use the least-privileged account that can complete the task Disable when code or dependencies are untrusted

These are starting policies, not universal presets. Confirm the effective policy after applying one and adjust for the actual command set.

Troubleshoot common surprises

The setting appears enabled but commands are unrestricted

Check that you changed settings on the Agent Host execution machine, started a new session and are using the Agent Host rather than Local or a custom terminal harness. Then inspect the effective policy and whether an approved unsandboxed fallback was used.

A needed command cannot access a service

Determine whether it needs ordinary outbound access, local-network access, a specific hostname or a credential. Enable only that capability, add the narrow destination or path, and retry in a new session if the change is host-level.

Builds fail after disabling developer-tool access

The build may depend on global configuration, language-server data or caches exposed through allowDevToolAccess. Re-enable it only on a host and workspace where that access is acceptable, or provide a narrowly scoped alternative path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Git operations fail

Check authenticategit, the allowed destination list and filesystem permissions independently. A sandbox can permit the command while withholding credentials, or provide credentials while blocking the required host.

Windows or WSL setup fails

Verify the execution environment, install the documented Linux packages on WSL2 or Linux, confirm that the Windows security update matches the supported release, and remember that WSL 1 is unsupported. Requirements are release-sensitive, so consult the current guide rather than relying on an older checklist.

Change checklist

  • Identify the machine and harness running Agent Host.
  • Enable chat.agent.sandbox.enabled and start a fresh session.
  • Choose whether outbound and local-network access are actually needed.
  • Use specific allowed domains instead of broad connectivity where possible.
  • Grant only required read/write and read-only paths.
  • Disable developer-tool access, Git authentication or GitHub authentication when unnecessary.
  • Set allowUnsandboxedCommands=false when policy requires every command to remain restricted.
  • Keep unfamiliar workspaces in Restricted Mode until reviewed.
  • Inspect the effective policy and test with a harmless command.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I enable sandboxing for Copilot in VS Code?

On the machine where the Agent Host executes, enable chat.agent.sandbox.enabled, then start a new Agent Host session. Confirm the effective policy before running a meaningful command; changing the setting on a local client does not necessarily change a remote host.

Which Copilot sandbox settings are safest to change first?

Start with least privilege: turn off allowNetwork for offline work, keep allowLocalNetwork off, grant only required filesystem paths, disable unused Git or GitHub authentication, and set allowUnsandboxedCommands to false when fail-closed behavior is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does sandboxing replace Copilot approval prompts?

No. Visual Studio Code states that “Sandboxing is independent of the permission level.” Approvals govern whether actions require confirmation, while the sandbox constrains supported terminal processes. Built-in read, edit and write tools use the permission system.

Should I enable local-network access if ordinary internet access is enabled?

Not automatically. allowLocalNetwork is a separate control and defaults to false. Enable it only for a named private service, database, development server or device, and review the documented Windows proxy and hostname restrictions.

Why can a sandboxed command still use my GitHub account?

authenticategh defaults to true and can expose GitHub credentials to sandboxed processes. If enabled, the process can act with that account’s permissions. Disable it when the task does not require GitHub operations.

Are the old macOS, Linux and Windows sandbox settings still valid?

The platform-specific keys chat.agent.sandbox.fileSystem.mac, .linux and .windows are deprecated legacy settings and are ignored by Agent Host. Use the unified Agent Host settings instead, and identify whether an older guide targeted Local or a custom terminal.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do when a command asks to run outside the sandbox?

Treat the prompt as a boundary expansion. If your policy requires every command to remain restricted, set chat.agent.sandbox.allowUnsandboxedCommands to false; the command will fail instead of offering a fallback. Otherwise approve only after checking the command, data and account involved.

Is Restricted Mode enough for an unfamiliar repository?

Restricted Mode is an important separate layer: it limits agents, terminals, tasks, debugging, workspace settings and extensions, and blocks terminal launch by default. Inspect the repository before trusting it, but remember VS Code cannot guarantee that a malicious extension will honor Restricted Mode.

What Linux and Windows prerequisites does Agent Host need?

The current guide lists bubblewrap and socat for Linux and WSL2, with WSL 1 unsupported. macOS has no additional package requirement listed. Windows support is experimental and currently lists Windows 11 24H2/25H2 KB5124008 and Windows 11 26H1 KB5124012; verify the live requirement for your release.

The Bottom Line

Enable chat.agent.sandbox.enabled on the actual Agent Host, start a fresh session, and then grant only the network destinations, filesystem paths, tools and credentials the task requires. Keep local-network access and unsandboxed fallback off unless there is a documented need. Use approvals and Restricted Mode as separate controls, and never treat the sandbox as a virtual machine or complete security boundary.
