For most people, WireGuard is the best VPN protocol to try first in 2026 when the chosen VPN service supports it well. OpenVPN is the better fit when you need selectable UDP or TCP transports, multiple connection profiles, or broad configuration flexibility. IKEv2/IPsec is a sensible option for mobile roaming when your operating system and VPN provider implement reconnect behavior well.
There is no protocol that wins on every device, network, and provider. A protocol defines how a VPN connection negotiates security and carries traffic; it does not tell you whether the provider keeps trustworthy logs, how it assigns IP addresses, or how reliable its applications are. Use the comparison below to match a protocol to your actual devices and networks.

What a VPN protocol controls
A VPN protocol is the set of rules used to establish a tunnel, authenticate the endpoints, negotiate cryptographic parameters, and transport your traffic through that tunnel. The choice influences the cryptographic construction, key management, compatibility with networks and operating systems, reconnect behavior, and the performance you observe.
It is not the same thing as a VPN service. Two services can offer the same protocol yet produce different results because of server capacity, routing, application quality, configuration, distance to the server, and the network you are using. Protocol selection also cannot establish a provider’s privacy policy. Logging, account records, IP-address handling, ownership, and legal disclosures require a separate evaluation.

WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPsec at a glance
| Protocol | What is established | Good starting use case | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| WireGuard | The official specification defines a modern, fixed cryptographic construction. Its project overview describes public-key peer identity and cryptokey routing. | General personal use when the provider’s app supports WireGuard properly. | The protocol design does not guarantee a provider’s privacy practices, server performance, or behavior on every network. |
| OpenVPN | The official 2.6 manual documents UDP and TCP transports, multiple connection profiles, and Data Channel Offload (DCO) subject to configuration and platform requirements. | Networks or deployments where transport choice, fallback profiles, or detailed configuration matter. | UDP, TCP, and DCO can behave differently across devices and networks; “OpenVPN” alone does not identify the complete connection setup. |
| IKEv2/IPsec | IKEv2 is an Internet Standards Track key-exchange protocol specified by IETF RFC 7296. Consumer VPN implementations commonly pair it with IPsec. | Mobile users who move between Wi‑Fi and cellular networks, provided their client and service support the behavior. | Reconnect speed and roaming reliability depend on the operating system, client, and provider, not on the RFC alone. |
For the underlying documents, see the WireGuard protocol specification, the WireGuard project overview, the OpenVPN 2.6 manual, and IETF RFC 7296.
WireGuard: the strongest default for ordinary use
How its security model works
WireGuard’s official specification identifies the handshake construction as Noise_IKpsk2_25519_ChaChaPoly_BLAKE2s. It defines the use of ChaCha20-Poly1305 and BLAKE2s-based functions within that design. The project documentation explains that peers authenticate with public keys and use cryptokey routing to associate peer keys with allowed tunnel IP addresses. In the project’s words, “Public keys are short and simple, and are used by peers to authenticate each other.”
This fixed construction is useful because an implementation has fewer protocol choices to expose or misconfigure than a system built from many interchangeable components. That does not make every WireGuard deployment automatically secure: the provider still controls key provisioning, account systems, server configuration, address assignment, and operational data.
Why it is usually the first protocol to try
- It has a contemporary, clearly documented cryptographic design.
- Its key-based peer model makes the identity relationship explicit.
- Many current VPN applications present it as a simple selectable option.
- It is a practical baseline for comparing your provider’s latency and throughput against its other supported protocols.
Those are design and usability reasons, not a promise of a particular speed. A nearby, lightly loaded server using another protocol can outperform a distant or congested WireGuard server.
When to choose something else
Choose another option when the service does not support WireGuard on your device, when the network requires a transport profile that your WireGuard client cannot provide, or when testing shows that the provider’s WireGuard implementation reconnects poorly in your situation. Switching protocols is a troubleshooting and compatibility decision, not an admission that WireGuard’s specification is deficient.

OpenVPN: flexibility through transports and profiles
UDP and TCP are meaningful differences
The OpenVPN 2.6 manual documents configurations with different connection profiles, including UDP and TCP choices. UDP generally avoids the retransmission behavior built into TCP, while TCP can be useful when a particular network or deployment only permits a TCP-based connection. The manual does not establish that one mode defeats every restrictive network, so treat transport selection as a compatibility tool that must be tested on the network you actually use.
Recommended Free Tools
Because a profile can contain more than one connection option, an application may be able to try an alternate server or transport after a failure. The exact fallback order and available profiles are controlled by the VPN provider and client; do not assume every OpenVPN app exposes the same choices.
What Data Channel Offload changes
The same manual describes Data Channel Offload (DCO), which moves suitable data-channel processing into the operating system. DCO use depends on supported ciphers, a compatible Linux kernel, and the ovpn-dco module. It is therefore incorrect to assume that every OpenVPN installation uses DCO or receives the same benefit. On a device without the required kernel and module, the client uses the implementation available for that platform.
Best reasons to select OpenVPN
- You need to switch between UDP and TCP profiles.
- Your organization distributes several connection profiles for different networks or gateways.
- A specific device or deployment already has mature OpenVPN configuration support.
- Your own testing shows more stable connections than the provider’s other protocols on a difficult network.
OpenVPN is not one single performance mode. Record the protocol, transport, profile, server, and client version when comparing results so that you are comparing like with like.
IKEv2/IPsec: a mobile-roaming option
What the standard specifies
RFC 7296, published by the Internet Engineering Task Force in October 2014, specifies Internet Key Exchange version 2 as an Internet Standards Track protocol for establishing and managing security associations. Consumer VPN products commonly combine IKEv2 with IPsec for the protected data path.

Why mobile users consider it
Switching from a home Wi‑Fi network to cellular data changes the local interface and often the network address. A well-integrated IKEv2/IPsec client can be a reasonable choice for users who make that transition frequently, but the result must be verified on the specific phone, operating-system version, and VPN service. A protocol label alone cannot promise seamless handoffs.
When it is not the obvious choice
If your provider’s application does not support IKEv2/IPsec on your platform, or if it requires manual configuration that does not fit your devices, use a supported alternative. If your priority is transport fallback on restrictive networks, OpenVPN’s documented profile choices may be more relevant. If your priority is a straightforward general-purpose default, test WireGuard first.
What is the fastest VPN protocol?
There is no protocol-wide speed number that applies to every user. Throughput and latency depend on the provider, server load, routing, distance, device hardware, client implementation, local access connection, and test method. A result measured on one provider is not a controlled comparison of the protocol in isolation.

| 2,334 Mbps | WireGuard with PrivadoVPN | A result from TechRadar’s 2026 test round, not a universal WireGuard maximum or expectation. |
| 1,038 Mbps | OpenVPN with ExpressVPN | A result from the same publisher’s stated test round, but with a different provider and setup, so it is not a protocol-only comparison. |

How to choose the right protocol for your situation
1. Inventory the devices you will protect
Write down the operating systems and device types that matter: desktop, laptop, phone, tablet, router, or a managed work system. Open the VPN provider’s current support page or application settings and confirm which protocols are available on each platform. A protocol is not an option if the service does not implement it for your device.

2. Identify your difficult networks
List the places where you expect to connect: home broadband, office Wi‑Fi, hotel networks, public hotspots, school networks, and cellular data. If a network occasionally blocks or mishandles a connection style, a service exposing OpenVPN UDP and TCP profiles gives you more configurations to test. Do not infer from the protocol name that any mode will work on every managed or filtered network.

Select WireGuard in the provider app, connect to a nearby server, and use the connection for normal browsing, calls, downloads, and any other workload you care about. Check whether websites load, calls remain stable, and the VPN reconnects after sleep or a brief network interruption. If the experience is reliable, there is no need to change protocols merely because another option exists.
4. Test OpenVPN when transport flexibility matters
If WireGuard fails to connect or behaves poorly on one of your networks, select OpenVPN and test UDP first if that profile is offered. If UDP is unavailable or unreliable, test the provider’s TCP profile. Keep the server location and test activity as consistent as possible so that the protocol change is the main variable. Record which profile worked; “OpenVPN” without the transport is incomplete information.
5. Test IKEv2/IPsec for frequent network changes
On a supported mobile device, test IKEv2/IPsec while moving between Wi‑Fi and cellular data. Observe whether the tunnel reconnects, whether applications recover without manual intervention, and whether the VPN’s kill-switch behavior matches your safety requirements. Results that differ between two phones or operating-system versions reflect implementation differences, not a contradiction in the standard.
6. Measure your own baseline
Run the same speed and latency test without a VPN and then with each candidate protocol. Use the same device, server region, time window, and test service where possible. Repeat at least once at a busy time rather than treating a single reading as a permanent ranking. Note latency, download and upload throughput, connection time, reconnection behavior, and whether streaming, calls, or gaming remain usable.
7. Separate protocol findings from provider findings
If two protocols from one service perform poorly, the cause may be server congestion, routing, an application defect, or the service itself rather than the protocol. Compare another nearby server before drawing a conclusion, and evaluate the provider’s privacy documentation independently from these technical tests.

Finding and changing the setting in a VPN app
Labels differ by provider, but the control is usually in a connection or protocol section rather than in account billing. Use this sequence without assuming that every app has every item:
- Open the provider’s VPN application and sign in.
- Open Settings, Connection, or a similarly named preferences screen.
- Find VPN protocol, Protocol, or an advanced connection selector.
- Choose WireGuard, OpenVPN, or IKEv2/IPsec if the option is listed. If OpenVPN exposes a transport selector, note whether it is UDP or TCP.
- Disconnect and reconnect after changing the setting. Some clients apply the change only to the next connection.
- Confirm the selected protocol in the app’s connection details or diagnostic screen, then test the network behavior you care about.
If no selector appears, the app may choose automatically or restrict protocols on that platform. Consult the provider’s current documentation rather than installing an unrelated configuration file from an untrusted source.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The VPN will not connect
- Try another nearby server to rule out a single-server outage.
- Switch from WireGuard to an offered OpenVPN profile, then test the alternate UDP or TCP transport if available.
- Check whether the network requires a sign-in portal; complete that portal before starting the VPN.
- Update the provider app and operating system, then retry with the same protocol.
The connection drops when changing networks
- On a mobile device, test the provider’s IKEv2/IPsec option if supported.
- Check the app’s battery-optimization and background-data permissions so the operating system does not suspend it.
- Verify whether the kill switch intentionally blocks traffic while the tunnel renegotiates.
- Repeat the Wi‑Fi-to-cellular test on the exact device and operating-system version you use daily.
Throughput is much lower than expected
- Run a no-VPN baseline and test a nearby server before changing several variables.
- Compare WireGuard with OpenVPN on the same server and at the same time.
- Check whether the device, local Wi‑Fi, or internet plan is the bottleneck.
- Remember that published provider results, including TechRadar’s 2026 figures, are snapshots of specific setups rather than guarantees.
One network works and another does not
That pattern points to network compatibility or filtering rather than a universal security difference. Try the alternate OpenVPN transport if the service supplies one, or test another supported protocol. A managed network may deliberately block VPN traffic; do not attempt to bypass an organization’s rules without authorization.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteProtocol security is only one part of VPN trust
WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2/IPsec describe tunnel operation. They do not answer who can access account records, whether connection metadata is retained, how shared addresses are assigned, how incidents are disclosed, or what jurisdictional obligations apply to the provider. Read the provider’s privacy policy and technical documentation, look for clear explanations of logging and data retention, and consider whether the service publishes meaningful independent audits or transparency information.
Likewise, a familiar protocol name does not prove that the client is current or correctly configured. Keep the application updated, use the provider’s official installation source, protect the account with a strong unique password and multi-factor authentication when available, and verify that the kill switch and DNS settings behave as you expect.
Quick Recap
Bottom line: a practical 2026 order of preference
- Try WireGuard first for ordinary personal use when your provider supports it on the device.
- Use OpenVPN when UDP/TCP choice, multiple profiles, or a particular compatibility requirement is more important than a simple default.
- Consider IKEv2/IPsec for mobile roaming after confirming that your client and provider handle network changes reliably.
- Validate the result yourself with the actual provider, server, device, and networks you use.
- Evaluate privacy separately; protocol selection cannot substitute for examining the provider’s data practices.
