Which VPN Is Fastest in 2026? How to Find the Right One for Your Connection

There is no single VPN that is fastest for everyone. In Comparitech’s August 2026 lab test, Mullvad ranked first on its speed rubric; TechRadar’s separate 2026 comparison named PrivadoVPN fastest overall. The difference reflects test setup and scoring—not a guarantee that either service will be quickest on your connection. A VPN adds routing and encryption steps, so your result depends on your internet plan, location, route, server load, device, and protocol.

Which VPN is fastest?

It depends on how “fastest” is measured. A ranking may emphasize peak download throughput, speed retained versus a baseline, latency, stability, or a weighted combination. Testing location, routes, protocols, and measurement windows also differ, so one publisher’s winner may not match another’s.

Comparitech’s Q3 2026 lab ranking placed Mullvad first under a rubric that considers latency, speed retention, and bufferbloat. Its August 2026 test reported averages of 834 Mbps for Mullvad on WireGuard, 629 Mbps for ExpressVPN on OpenVPN, and 777 Mbps for NordVPN on NordLynx. These are results from Comparitech’s benchmark hosts and specific protocol tests, not expected speeds for a household. Comparitech says its setup cannot reproduce every reader’s ISP and route peering. Comparitech’s 2026 lab results and methodology

TechRadar’s separate tests, using several protocols and nearby UK and distant US routes, named PrivadoVPN fastest overall. The publication also noted irregular US-to-UK results as a possible accuracy limitation. The different winner is a useful reminder that rankings answer a question about a particular test, not every person’s connection. TechRadar’s fastest VPN comparison

Do VPNs make your internet slower?

Often, but not by a fixed amount. VPN traffic takes an additional route through a VPN server and is encrypted, which can add latency and reduce throughput. A nearby, uncongested server and an efficient protocol may keep the difference modest; a long route, busy server, weaker device, or poor network conditions can make it more noticeable. In some circumstances, a VPN route may perform differently from the direct route, so measure rather than assume.

Your internet connection is also a practical ceiling: a VPN cannot make a connection faster than the capacity available to it. NordVPN’s provider-published methodology describes tests across 11 locations and roughly 300 tests per day, measuring download, upload, and ping across protocols. It identifies congestion and geographic distance as performance factors. Those details explain that provider’s approach; they are not an independent testing standard. What the speed figures do—and do not—tell you

High benchmark Mbps can show that a VPN performed well under a specific test, but it does not predict your result. Comparitech’s host location and network path differ from yours, while your ISP’s peering, home Wi-Fi, hardware, server choice, and time of day can all change the outcome.

Download speed is only one part of performance. Security.org’s August 25, 2026 comparison reported download speed losses between 4% and 8.18% for five selected VPNs, while upload losses varied much more. Its reported upload losses included 84.26% for Private Internet Access. Those are Security.org’s results under its own test conditions, not universal performance figures for those services. The contrast shows why upload speed should be checked separately, especially for video calls, cloud backups, and sending large files. Security.org’s 2026 speed comparison

  • Download: Relevant to downloads and much streaming.
  • Upload: Important for video calls, file sharing, backups, and sending large files.
  • Latency (ping): The delay before a response; lower latency can matter more than peak Mbps for gaming, calls, and interactive work.
  • Stability: A consistent connection can be more useful than a high one-time reading.

How to test VPN speed on your own connection

A repeatable comparison is more useful than treating a reviewer’s headline figure as a personal forecast.

  1. Record a direct baseline. Disconnect the VPN and measure download, upload, and latency using the same speed-test service and device you will use for VPN checks. If possible, use a wired connection to reduce Wi-Fi variation.
  2. Test nearby and distant servers. Choose a nearby server for everyday use and at least one distant location for international routes. Record the location and server each time.
  3. Compare available protocols. Test protocols supported by your VPN and device, such as WireGuard, OpenVPN, or a provider’s implementation. Keep other conditions consistent.
  4. Repeat at different times. Run several measurements, including at more than one time of day. Server load, ISP congestion, and route conditions can shift.
  5. Compare all three readings. Note download, upload, and latency—not just the largest Mbps number. Consider stability and whether calls, browsing, or downloads feel responsive in your actual use.

Home Wi-Fi quality, device capability, ISP routing, server congestion, and route peering can affect results. If a reading looks unusually poor, repeat it and compare another nearby server before drawing a conclusion.

How to choose a fast VPN without overlooking privacy

Use speed evidence to judge performance and privacy evidence to judge privacy. A fast protocol or high benchmark score does not establish that a VPN is trustworthy. The available comparisons do not provide a sufficiently comparable provider-by-provider audit review to name one privacy winner.

  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
  • Check the privacy policy: Read what data the provider says it collects, retains, and shares.
  • Look at independent audits: Check who performed the audit, what systems or claims it covered, and when it was conducted. An audit’s scope and date matter.
  • Check leak protections: Look for evidence about DNS and IP leak protection, and consider whether the feature is available on your device.
  • Match protocol support to your devices: Compare performance only among protocols you can actually use; protocol implementations and results vary.
  • Fit it to your connection and use: Consider server locations, device support, upload needs, latency, and your own baseline rather than choosing by a distant lab’s peak download number.
