Choose Fighter, Strider, or Mage according to the combat you most want to play. Fighter uses sword-and-shield melee, Strider combines daggers, a bow and mobility, and Mage focuses on staff-based spellcasting. There is no permanently correct first choice: after you reach Gran Soren, additional vocations become available, and changing vocation preserves your progress in the previous vocation and the augments you purchased.
The short answer
Your starting vocation should match your preferred combat rhythm rather than a supposed “best” build. Pick:

The game divides those choices into three starting vocations, three advanced vocations and three hybrid vocations. Your first selection is therefore an entry point into a wider system, not a permanent character-class commitment. You can experiment later, but switching does not mean every skill from every vocation is simultaneously available. What Capcom specifically confirms is that your progress in a vocation and the augments you have purchased are retained when you change classes.
The three starting vocations
Fighter: sword-and-shield melee
Fighter is the straightforward choice for a character who wants to stand near enemies, attack with a sword and use a shield as part of the fighting style. The defining decision is positional: you solve encounters by engaging at close range rather than by maintaining distance or building a spell rotation.
- Weapons: sword and shield.
- Range: close combat.
- Defensive emphasis: guarding is part of the vocation’s identity.
- Best fit: players who enjoy readable melee exchanges and having a defensive tool available.
Select Fighter if the physical sensation of blocking, closing distance and striking with a blade sounds more appealing than aiming a bow or casting spells. It is a preference-led recommendation, not a claim that Fighter is objectively the easiest or strongest opening class.
Strider: agile daggers and bow
Strider gives you two distinct ways to contribute: daggers for close-range attacks and a bow for aimed ranged attacks. That combination makes the vocation a natural fit for players who want to move between distances instead of committing to one.
- Weapons: daggers and bow.
- Range: close and ranged combat.
- Movement: mobility is central to the described playstyle.
- Best fit: players who like switching tactics, repositioning and choosing between melee and shots.
Choose Strider when the appeal is flexibility and motion. You will have to decide which distance is advantageous in each encounter, so this is the starting option for a player who wants more than one weapon range from the beginning.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Mage: staff-based spellcasting
Mage is the clear starting choice if magic itself is the reason you are interested in the game. Its defining equipment is a staff, and its role is built around casting rather than sword-and-shield exchanges or bow-and-dagger transitions.
- Weapon: staff.
- Range: spellcasting, with the exact practical distance depending on the spell being used.
- Role focus: a dedicated magic-oriented starting identity.
- Best fit: players who specifically want their attacks and utility to come from spells.
Pick Mage because you want to learn and use a spell-focused toolkit. Do not choose it merely because you assume magic is universally superior; the available evidence does not establish such a ranking.
A decision checklist for your first character
Answer these questions before creating your character:
- Do you want a shield in your core kit? Choose Fighter.
- Do you want to alternate between melee and aimed ranged attacks? Choose Strider.
- Would you rather make spellcasting the center of combat? Choose Mage.
- Are you unsure? Select the weapon rhythm that sounds most enjoyable. The later vocation system means uncertainty is not a reason to delay starting the game.
This approach avoids treating an unverified “best class” list as a requirement. The three options are different enough that the feel of the weapons and range is a more useful first filter than an abstract ranking.
When the other six vocations become available
The additional vocations are not selected during the initial character-creation choice. According to the Gamer Guides vocation guide, you need to meet three conditions before changing into them:
Rank #3
- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Reach level 10.
- Reach Gran Soren.
- Have enough Discipline to spend when changing vocation.
Until those conditions are met, continue using one of the starting vocations. Once they are met, visit the game’s vocation-changing service in Gran Soren, spend the required Discipline and select a different available vocation. The exact cost and availability can vary by the vocation you are choosing, so check the in-game menu before confirming.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe six later vocations
The later choices are grouped as three advanced vocations and three hybrid vocations. The grouping is useful for understanding how the system broadens beyond the three introductory roles; it is not a promise that one group is stronger than the other.
| Group | Vocations | What the grouping tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Advanced | Warrior, Ranger, Sorcerer | More specialized follow-ups to the core weapon or magic identities |
| Hybrid | Mystic Knight, Assassin, Magick Archer | Combinations that blend different combat approaches |
Warrior
Warrior is listed as an advanced vocation. It belongs to the later set of choices rather than the three available at the start. Consider it when you want to explore a more specialized martial direction after learning the fundamentals with a starting vocation.
Ranger
Ranger is another advanced vocation. It expands the ranged-oriented side of the vocation system beyond the initial Strider choice. Move into it after the level-10, Gran Soren and Discipline requirements are satisfied if a more specialized ranged identity appeals to you.
Sorcerer
Sorcerer is the advanced option in the magic-focused group. Mage is the available starting route for a spell-centered character; Sorcerer becomes part of the later experimentation path once advanced vocations unlock.

Mystic Knight, Assassin and Magick Archer
Mystic Knight, Assassin and Magick Archer are the three hybrid vocations identified by the guide. Their hybrid classification signals a blended approach rather than a single starting weapon identity. If you enjoy combining different kinds of offense or want to move away from a purely focused role, investigate these after unlocking the later vocation tier.
Can you change vocations later?
Yes. The ability to change is one of the system’s most important safeguards against a stressful first choice. Capcom explains that your character retains progress made in a class and keeps purchased augments when switching. Read the wording narrowly: vocation progress and augments are confirmed to remain; that does not mean every skill or equipped ability from the old vocation can be used without restriction by the new one.
In practical terms, you can begin with Fighter, Strider or Mage, learn what kind of combat you enjoy, and then use Gran Soren’s vocation-changing service when the unlock requirements are met. Keep the Discipline requirement in mind before traveling to change, because reaching the location alone does not guarantee that you can purchase the new vocation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do vocations affect stats?
Yes. Capcom states that the stat gains received per level vary by class. That means the vocation active during level-ups contributes to how your long-term attributes develop. Capcom also warns that stat boosts decrease after level 100. In the 2012 article, Capcom author GregaMan wrote: “Regardless of class, stat boosts decrease per level after Level 100, so be sure to consider that when mapping out a leveling strategy.” You can read the statement in Capcom’s article.
The Gamer Guides reference provides vocation-by-vocation growth tables and describes the first ten levels as an introductory stretch before more strategic leveling decisions. Those numerical tables are a secondary guide’s presentation, not figures published in Capcom’s article.

Should you min-max your leveling?
For a first playthrough, treat stat planning as optional. The reversible vocation system and retained augments let you prioritize a combat style you actually enjoy instead of following a rigid level-by-level route from the opening minute.
Detailed planning is reasonable if you specifically enjoy optimization, want to target a particular late-game attribute profile or are preparing a carefully managed second character. In that case, use the growth tables as a planning reference, track which vocation is active when you level, and account for the post-level-100 reduction in stat gains. Do not present those steps as a completion requirement: the available sources establish that growth differs, not that one exact leveling route is necessary for every player.
Common first-choice mistakes
Choosing a class because someone called it “best”
No consulted source establishes a universal best starting vocation or a controlled beginner-difficulty comparison. A ranking detached from your preferred weapons can leave you playing a style you do not enjoy.

It is not. You still need to reach level 10, reach Gran Soren and spend Discipline, but the later system is designed for experimentation.
Assuming every old ability carries over
Capcom confirms retained vocation progress and purchased augments, not unrestricted access to every skill from every class. Check the vocation’s available skills and equipment after switching.
Planning every stat level before learning the game
Stat growth matters to optimizers, and growth changes after level 100, but a first-time player can begin with the vocation whose combat sounds fun and refine the plan later.
Practical first-playthrough paths
| If your starting instinct is… | Start with… | Later direction to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| “I want to block and fight up close.” | Fighter | Explore the advanced or hybrid options after unlocking them. |
| “I want daggers, a bow and constant repositioning.” | Strider | Investigate the later ranged or hybrid vocations. |
| “I want spells to define my character.” | Mage | Consider Sorcerer among the advanced choices. |
| “I do not know yet.” | Choose the weapon set you are most curious to try. | Change after Gran Soren when the requirements are met. |
The final row is a legitimate strategy, not a cop-out. Your first vocation teaches you what kind of inputs, distance and pacing you enjoy; the later choices let you respond to that experience.

Fighter is the sword-and-shield choice, Strider is the mobile daggers-and-bow choice, and Mage is the staff-and-spell choice. Start with the one whose moment-to-moment combat you want to experience. Reach level 10 and Gran Soren, save enough Discipline, then experiment with Warrior, Ranger, Sorcerer, Mystic Knight, Assassin or Magick Archer as they become available. Because vocation progress and purchased augments are retained when you switch, your opening decision should be about enjoyment—not fear of permanently ruining your character.
