Which USB-C Hub Works With Your MacBook? Five Verified Options and How to Choose

There isn’t enough verified product information to recommend six MacBook USB-C hubs as options that “just work.” The manufacturer guidance available supports five named Satechi products, but it does not establish a six-model lineup or comparative reliability. Here are the verified options, what each is for, and the compatibility checks that matter before you buy.

Start with your MacBook’s ports and chip

USB-C describes a connector, not a promise of video output, charging, Thunderbolt bandwidth, or support for a particular number of monitors. Check the exact MacBook model and its port specifications before choosing a hub. Apple says MacBook models introduced in 2015 or later have USB-C ports, but capabilities vary by generation. Current MacBook Air specifications, for example, list Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports that support charging, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt 4 up to 40Gb/s, and USB4 up to 40Gb/s; those specifications should not be assumed for older models. See Apple’s Mac port guide and MacBook Air technical specifications.

Video and charging are separate compatibility questions. A USB-C host port needs DisplayPort Alternate Mode or an applicable Thunderbolt connection for video, and the adapter must support the relevant display connection. Pass-through charging requires USB Power Delivery support, and the usable power depends on both the charger and the adapter’s power budget. Satechi explains these requirements in its connectivity and expansion compatibility guide.

Five named hubs and docks supported by manufacturer guidance

These are examples with product details described in Satechi’s current MacBook selection guide, not hands-on recommendations or a reliability ranking. Confirm the exact model’s current specifications and compatibility before purchase.

#1 Best Overall
Anker USB-C Hub for MacBook, 7-in-2 Mac Dock with 4K@60Hz HDMI | Thunderbolt 4 Compatible, USB-C and 2 USB-A 5Gbps Data Ports, for MacBook Pro, MacBook Air M4/M5 and More (Not Work with Neo)
  • Massive Expansion: Expand your MacBook's 2 USB-C ports into 1 multi-function USB-C port, 1 USB-C data port, 2 USB-A ports, 1 HDMI port, 1 SD card slot, and 1 microSD card slot—all from one ultra-compact hub.
  • High-Speed, High-Def: A multi-function USB-C port supports huge charging power up to 100W, data transfer up to an astounding 40 Gb/s, and media display at resolutions up to 5K.
  • Multi-Monitor Display: The HDMI port supports a resolution of 4K@60Hz while the multi-function port supports 5K@60Hz. Connect to both simultaneously to enjoy crystal-clear streaming or mirroring across 2 displays. Note: M1, M2 and M3 MacBooks do not support dual external display.
  • Designed for the Latest MacBooks: Works with the latest MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, and is designed specially to avoid obstructing your MacBook's MagSafe port. Note: this hub is not compatible with MacBook Neo.
  • What You Get: Anker 547 USB-C Hub (7-in-2, for MacBook), welcome guide, worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Product Best fit Manufacturer-listed features Important tradeoff
Satechi OntheGo 7-in-1 Multiport Adapter Travel and a single display HDMI up to 4K at 60Hz, Ethernet, SD and microSD card readers, two USB-A ports, and 100W pass-through Pass-through is not the same as power delivered to the MacBook; the charger and adapter power budget matter.
Satechi USB-C Multiport Adapter 8K with Ethernet V3 Single-display use where HDMI 2.1 headroom and Ethernet are useful Manufacturer guidance presents it as a single-display adapter with 8K HDMI 2.1 capability and Ethernet Check the MacBook’s own display support; an adapter’s headline resolution does not guarantee that every Mac can drive it.
Satechi Pro Hub Slim A flush-fitting, built-in-style connection Connects through both USB-C ports on MacBook Air and MacBook Pro It occupies both host ports. Verify exact MacBook compatibility and whether that leaves enough connectivity for your setup.
Satechi Thunderbolt 4 Slim Hub A compact desk setup with Thunderbolt peripherals Expands one Thunderbolt 4 port to three downstream Thunderbolt ports plus USB-A Requires a compatible Thunderbolt 4 host connection; a USB-C-shaped port alone is not sufficient.
Satechi Thunderbolt 4 Multimedia Pro Dock A desk-oriented dock and one-cable connection 16 ports and 96W charging over one cable Choose it only if the Mac’s native external-display capabilities support the monitor arrangement you want.

Product details and the manufacturer’s use-case guidance are in Satechi’s MacBook hub and dock selector. The available product guidance does not establish six independently verified models, nor does it compare reliability. Apple also lists its USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter as an HDMI and USB-A adapter option; it is a simpler alternative rather than a full hub shortlist entry.

Match the hub to your monitor limit

Your Mac’s chip can limit how many external displays it supports natively, regardless of how many video ports a dock provides. Satechi’s current guide lists the following native display counts. Treat these as a selection guide and verify the exact Mac model’s capabilities in Apple’s specifications before planning a setup.

Apple chip family in Satechi’s guide Native external displays listed
Base M1 or M2 1
M3 1; 2 with the MacBook lid closed
M2 Pro, M3 Pro, M4, M4 Pro, or M5 2
M5 Pro 3
M2 Max through M5 Max 4

These counts concern native external-display support, not a guarantee that a specific hub supports the same resolution or refresh rate. Satechi says DisplayLink can exceed some native limits, but using it requires installing a driver and granting screen-recording permission. That software-based route is different from native display output, so check the product and setup requirements before relying on it.

Check fit, charging, and the connection you actually need

  • Host connection: Confirm whether your MacBook port is USB-C with DisplayPort Alternate Mode, USB4, or Thunderbolt, and match it to the hub’s requirements.
  • Display setup: Check the Mac’s native display limit, then the adapter’s supported resolution and refresh rate. Apple’s adapter guide explains options for video connections.
  • Charging: Confirm USB Power Delivery support and use a charger with enough capacity for both the MacBook and the adapter’s power needs.
  • Ports and data: Compare the actual connector mix you need—such as Ethernet, USB-A, card readers, or downstream Thunderbolt—rather than relying on the number of ports alone.
  • Physical fit: A direct-fit design can occupy both MacBook ports, and some older direct-fit hubs may not fit with a hard-shell case. Check the product’s model-specific fit information; Satechi’s Type-C Pro Hub setup guide illustrates why fit and port access are product-specific.

Apple cautions that “If devices connected through a hub or external display do not respond, they may not be compatible.” If a peripheral fails, check both the Mac’s specifications and the hub’s compatibility guidance rather than assuming that a shared USB-C connector guarantees support.
